Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of the Lava men change forever after Florences grand speech and with the possession of the magical stone Marine. But they arent in for a life of luxury and comfort their destiny calls for something greater, for a purpose far higher than any of them would have fathomed. In the beautiful and serene village of Chess Squares, the arrival of Lava men is followed by morevisitors. And they are not pleasant at all. The magic turns evil and a war for the possession of the magical stone ensues. With the Witch of the Woods scheming and plotting with her allies and things spiraling out of control for the Lava men and their friends, the tale takes a turn that of treachery, revelation of secrets, forgotten relationships, and the relentless drive to avenge at any cost. The misunderstandings, the revelations, and the time travel, all mark the the Lava familys time at the village of Chess Squares as a highly adventurous one where they not only try to protect themselves and Marine, but also embark on a tireless mission to help those in dire need at the village, using the special gifts bestowed on them. The second part of the book introduces new characters and a few old ones who visit the village of Chess Squares, those that have met the Lave men or one of them in their earlier escapade, each destined to fulfill their roles. Some fall prey to evil and some manage to stand above all of it. The second part concludes on how love and compassion stands with steely resolve in the face of all kinds of evil and opposition, and how the truth prevails despite the armies mustered by falsehood.

Book excerpt: "Once a Marine...always a Marine." I heard that expression countless times growing up in reference to my father, Roger Jamieson. He was a World War II era Marine officer. He was one of 17 million Americans who put their lives on hold to defend our great nation. He suffered from fleas and jungle rot, Dengue Fever, dysentery and Hepatitis A. He was wounded twice and suffered the loss of his entire platoon. He also lost his cousin, David, who was killed in action. This is a story about my father's life, his upbringing and subsequent training in the Marines. It is a story about the battles he faced along the way; some internal and some external. It is also a story about a father and son revisiting old battlefields and reliving bad memories in the quest for closure. Roger would say that he didn't do anything special or different from anyone else. In the end, he, his extended family and neighborhood sacrificed and suffered like all Americans did during the war: separation, loneliness, illness, injury and death of loved ones and comrades. But to me, my father was a brave man and my hero. And like millions of his fellow servicemen and women, when the war was over, Roger married, found work and raised a family and tried to put the war behind him. We kids all knew about the Marines. We were indoctrinated and believed they were the top branch in all the U.S. Armed Forces. Most of my early recollections about World War II were based on the Hollywood heroics of John Wayne, the television series, "Combat" and the like. My understanding about what our World War II veterans did was superficial, at best. In 1994, while watching a documentary on the 50th anniversary of D-Day Normandy, I began to think about my dad and what he must have gone through in the Pacific. I knew he had quietly harbored a lot of guilt and pain over the years. It became my goal and passion to help him experience as much healing as possible. Thus, we joined a reunion tour to Okinawa and took side tours to Guam and Saipan. The year of preparation and the trip yielded many unexpected surprises and discoveries. Part One of this book chronicles Roger Jamieson's life growing up in New Jersey and continues through his Marine Corps career. Part Two is a story of rediscovery in which my dad and I retrace his steps as a Marine officer with the hope of coming to term with his past. Book excerpt: Based on Evan Wright's National Magazine Award-winning story in Rolling Stone, this is the raw, firsthand account of the 2003 Iraq invasion that inspired the HBO® original mini-series. Within hours of 9/11, America’s war on terrorism fell to those like the twenty-three Marines of the First Recon Battalion, the first generation dispatched into open-ended combat since Vietnam. They were a new pop-culture breed of American warrior unrecognizable to their forebears—soldiers raised on hip hop, video games and The Real World. Cocky, brave, headstrong, wary and mostly unprepared for the physical, emotional and moral horrors ahead, the “First Suicide Battalion” would spearhead the blitzkrieg on Iraq, and fight against the hardest resistance Saddam had to offer. Hailed as “one of the best books to come out of the Iraq war”(Financial Times), Generation Kill is the funny, frightening, and profane firsthand account of these remarkable men, of the personal toll of victory, and of the randomness, brutality and camaraderie of a new American War.

Book excerpt: The curiosity, drive, and perseverance of the nineteenth-century woman scientist who pioneered the use of aquariums to study ocean life are celebrated in this gorgeous, empowering picture book. How did a nineteenth-century dressmaker revolutionize science? Jeanne Power was creative: she wanted to learn about the creatures that swim beneath the ocean waves, so she built glass tanks and changed the way we study underwater life forever. Jeanne Power was groundbreaking: she solved mysteries of sea animals and published her findings at a time when few of women’s contributions to science were acknowledged. Jeanne Power was persistent: when records of her research were lost, she set to work repeating her studies. And when men tried to take credit for her achievements, she stood firm and insisted on the recognition due to her. Jeanne Power was inspiring, and the legacy of this pioneering marine scientist lives on in every aquarium.

Book excerpt: The explosive true story of Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legendary Marine sniper in the Vietnam War. There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has only been one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines—on their own ground. And each time, he emerged from the jungle having done his duty. His record is one of the finest in military history, with ninety-three confirmed kills. This is the story of a simple man who endured incredible dangers and hardships for his country and his Corps. These are the missions that have made Carlos Hathcock a legend in the brotherhood of Marines. They are exciting, powerful, chilling—and all true. INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS

Butler won renown as a Marine battlefield hero, campaigning in most of America's foreign military expeditions from 1898 to the late 1920s. He became the leading national advocate for paramilitary police reform. Upon his retirement, however, he renounced war and imperialism and devoted his energy and prestige to various dissident and leftist political causes.
