This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean processes are fundamental to climate and weather patterns across the world; they provide minerals, foods and chemicals as well as being major energy resources, both hydrocarbons and renewables. Oceans also provide services in the form of transport, trade, communications and recreation; as well as services through the maintenance of biological and landscape diversity, the importance of which may only be fully appreciated by future generations. For all these reasons, the Committee's report finds that, despite the impressive research efforts of UK institutions and individual scientists, oceans need to be monitored and studied more thoroughly than has been the case up to now with better co-ordination of activities and increased overall levels of funding. The Committee's central recommendation is that there should be a new marine science agency, replacing the current inter-agency co-ordinating committee, with a remit to co-ordinate marine science throughout the UK, promoting marine science education in schools, universities and to the wider public. Overall responsibility for the UK's marine science strategy should be invested in a designated minister within Defra. The new agency should undertake a strategy to tackle skills shortages in marine science and technology, engaging with industry and facilitating UK involvement in international organisations, as well as co-ordinating ocean monitoring and observations. Another key task will be to ensure the balance of research effort between the different strands within marine science and between the crucial polar regions, with a greater focus in the Arctic, albeit not at the expense of the work conducted by the British Antarctic Survey. Concerns are raised over the research vessel capacity available to UK scientists provided by NERC, especially for coastal research, and with regards to the adequacy of Defra's plans to establish marine protected areas under the forthcoming marine bill.

Book Synopsis Urban Environments and Wildlife Law by : Paul A. Rees
Download or read book Urban Environments and Wildlife Law written by Paul A. Rees and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today construction industry is being asked more and more to protect the quality of the countryside and to help enhance our natural environment. The industry is subject to a complex and wide-ranging regulatory framework; it now needs to understand its responsibilities and take them seriously. Paul Rees provides here an authoritative guide, outlining wildlife and nature conservation law in the UK - including our European and international commitments, and giving clear explanations to a potentially costly area of law in a style accessible to the non-legal market. This comprehensive manual offers information and guidance for building surveyors, environmental managers, engineers and planners on: the legal and planning issues around biodiversity, nature conservation and construction how ecosystems work and why certain species and habitats need protection where to go for the relevant legislation and appropriate organisations for help and advice. UK and European case law demonstrates how the law has functioned in particular instances, and case studies illustrate how companies have adapted to fulfil their legal obligations. These are key features of the book and provide information on important legal precedents as well as demonstrating current industry best practice.

Book Synopsis Peace, War, and Partnership by : William A. Taylor
Download or read book Peace, War, and Partnership written by William A. Taylor and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the period from World War II through the Trump presidency, Peace, War, and Partnership: Congress and the Military since World War II unpacks the vital and dynamic relationship between Congress and the military, two entities that have worked together, at times with different purposes, to solve myriad important issues impacting the United States in both peace and war. Congress and the military have had their periods of cooperation. However, they have also had alternating periods of resistance to each other, based on distinct conceptions of national interests and divergent strategies. Their partnership has been a symbiotic relationship in which one entity or the other has ebbed and flowed in power depending on the circumstances. They have altered each other in far-reaching ways and transformed American society as a result of their liaisons. Peace, War, and Partnership analyzes the significant, powerful, and central relationship between Congress and the military. It investigates intersections of policy, politics, and society to theorize the impact of this relationship on the United States in the modern era. This work also offers a better understanding of earlier attempts by policy makers in Congress and the military to provide national security, contextualizing highly relevant current issues such as military service, proliferation, foreign intervention, national security, joint operations, diplomacy, alliances, mobilization, post-conflict resolution, citizenship, and military innovation. It illuminates crucial questions involving military policies in American democracy, and their sway on America historically and today, sparking and informing public debate about its implications now and for the future.

Download or read book Whale Sharks written by Alistair D.M. Dove and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whale sharks are the largest of all fishes, fascinating for comparative studies of all manner of biological fields, including functional anatomy, growth, metabolism, movement ecology, behavior and physiology. These gentle ocean giants have captured the interest of scientists and the imagination of the public, yet their future is uncertain. The conservation status of whale sharks was upgraded to Endangered on the IUCN Red List and the species faces a range of intense threats from human activities. Can these iconic living animals, who have survived for millions of years, survive us? Written by the world’s leading experts in whale shark biology, ecology, and conservation, Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation is the first definitive volume about the world's biggest fish. Chapters include discussions of satellite-linked tags, used to track whale shark movements; genetic sequencing, to examine evolutionary adaptations; even the use of underwater ultrasound units to investigate the species’ reproduction. The editors hope that by collating what is known, they can make it easier for future researchers, conservationists, and resource managers to fill some of the remaining knowledge gaps, and provide the information they need to join the team. As you work your way through this book, we hope that you will develop a sense of awe and marvel at all of our good fortune to share the ocean, and the planet, with this utterly extraordinary species.

Download or read book Report of the twenty-fourth session of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries, FAO headquarters, Rome, Italy, 20–23 June 2023 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the outcomes of the twenty-fourth session of the GFCM Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries. The Committee reviewed the work carried out during the 2022–2023 intersession, including in the context of the MedSea4Fish programme, and provided advice on the status of priority stocks and ecosystems and on potential management measures addressing key fisheries and vulnerable species in the Mediterranean. At the regional level, the Committee provided advice on: i) European eel, red coral and common dolphinfish fisheries in the Mediterranean; ii) minimum conservation reference size for GFCM priority species, including deep-water red shrimp and European hake at the regional level as well as small pelagics in the Adriatic sea and round sardinella in the eastern Mediterranean; and iii) the socioeconomic impacts of a potential extension of bottom trawling limits. With regard to small-scale fisheries, the Committee supported the need to revise the monitoring framework of the Regional Plan of Action for small-scale fisheries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. It discussed additional work in support of the GFCM, endorsing dedicated research programmes, including on recreational fisheries and on jellyfish in the Alboran Sea, as well as a draft regional plan of action to monitor and mitigate interactions between fisheries and vulnerable species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and identified further actions towards the implementation of standardized monitoring plans for fisheries restricted areas (FRAs) and the development of pilot studies to identify boundaries of known vulnerable marine ecosystems. It also discussed issues related to decarbonization and climate change, estimation of discards and fishing capacity. In line with the subregional approach, the Committee formulated advice on i) blackspot seabream in the western Mediterranean; ii) small pelagics in the Alboran Sea; iii) a FRA in the Cabliers Coral Mound Province; iv) Norway lobster, red mullet and striped red mullet in the central Mediterranean; v) round sardinella, small-scale fisheries and non-indigenous species in the eastern Mediterranean; and vi) small pelagics and key demersal stocks in the Adriatic Sea. Finally, the Committee agreed upon its workplan for 2023–2025.
