Book Synopsis Information Engineering of Emergency Treatment for Marine Oil Spill Accidents by : Lin Mu
Download or read book Information Engineering of Emergency Treatment for Marine Oil Spill Accidents written by Lin Mu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil spills are a serious marine disaster. Oil spill accidents usually occur in shipping, ports and offshore oil development. Although most are emergent events, once an oil spill occurs, it will cause great harm to the marine ecological environment, and bring direct harm to the economic development along the affected coast as well as to human health and public safety. Information Engineering of Emergency Treatment for Marine Oil Spill Accidents analyzes the causes of these accidents, introduces China's emergency response system, discusses technologies such as remote sensing and monitoring of oil spill on the sea surface and oil fingerprint identification, studies model prediction of marine oil spill behavior and fate and emergency treatment technologies for oil spills on the sea surface, and emphatically introduces the emergency prediction and warning system for oil spills in the Bohai Sea as well as oil spill-sensitive resources and emergency resource management systems. Features: The status quo and causes of marine oil spill pollution, as well as hazards of oil spill on the sea. The emergency response system for marine oil spills. Model-based prediction methods of marine oil spills. A series of used and developing emergency treatments of oil spill on the sea. This book serves as a reference for scientific investigators who want to understand the key technologies for emergency response to marine oil spill accidents, including the current level and future development trend of China in this field.
Download or read book Getting It Right written by Harley McGee and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992-11-16 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting It Right is the first "insider's" account of this period of regional development in Canada. Harley McGee draws on his experience with the government at senior regional and departmental levels, and on primary and secondary sources, to examine the evolution of federal regional development policies and the structures developed between 1970 and 1991 to implement them. He dispels some of the myths and challenges some of the perceptions about the manner in which regional development has been tackled by governments in Canada. He explores the federal-provincial dimensions of regional development, as well as the difficulty of reconciling the perceived dichotomy between national and regional policies. McGee argues that the 1982 move away from the DREE model of regional development was a mistake, and suggests that the predilection of governments for reorganising existing instruments of regional development policy and creating new ones has been detrimental to regional economies. Mindful of the new realities of the global economy within which Canada and its regions must compete, and of the promise/threat of rapidly changing technology, McGee identifies the need for a new order of priorities with which governments can meet these challenges and opportunities.

Book Synopsis Investigating the oceans by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee
Download or read book Investigating the oceans written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean processes are fundamental to climate and weather patterns across the world; they provide minerals, foods and chemicals as well as being major energy resources, both hydrocarbons and renewables. Oceans also provide services in the form of transport, trade, communications and recreation; as well as services through the maintenance of biological and landscape diversity, the importance of which may only be fully appreciated by future generations. For all these reasons, the Committee's report finds that, despite the impressive research efforts of UK institutions and individual scientists, oceans need to be monitored and studied more thoroughly than has been the case up to now with better co-ordination of activities and increased overall levels of funding. The Committee's central recommendation is that there should be a new marine science agency, replacing the current inter-agency co-ordinating committee, with a remit to co-ordinate marine science throughout the UK, promoting marine science education in schools, universities and to the wider public. Overall responsibility for the UK's marine science strategy should be invested in a designated minister within Defra. The new agency should undertake a strategy to tackle skills shortages in marine science and technology, engaging with industry and facilitating UK involvement in international organisations, as well as co-ordinating ocean monitoring and observations. Another key task will be to ensure the balance of research effort between the different strands within marine science and between the crucial polar regions, with a greater focus in the Arctic, albeit not at the expense of the work conducted by the British Antarctic Survey. Concerns are raised over the research vessel capacity available to UK scientists provided by NERC, especially for coastal research, and with regards to the adequacy of Defra's plans to establish marine protected areas under the forthcoming marine bill.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings and the outcomes of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Integrated Technologies for Environmental Monitoring and Information Production, which was held in Marmaris, Turkey, between September 10- 14, 200 I. With the contribution of 45 experts from 20 different countries, the ARW has provided the opportunity to resolve the basic conflicts that tend to arise between different disciplines associated with environmental data management and to promote understanding between experts on an international and multidisciplinary basis. The prevailing universal problem in environmental data management (EDM) systems is the significant incoherence between data collection procedures and the retrieval of information required by the users. This indicates the presence of problems still encountered in the realization of; (1) delineation of objectives, constraints, institutional aspects of EDM; (2) design of data collection networks; (3) statistical sampling; (4) physical sampling and presentation of data; (5) data processing and environmental databases; (6) reliability of data; (7) data analysis and transfer of data into information; and (8) data accessibility and data exchange at local, regional and global scales. Further problems stem from the lack of coherence between different disciplines involved in EDM, lack of coordination between responsible agencies on a country basis, and lack of coordination on an international level regarding the basic problems and relevant solutions that should be sought.

Book Synopsis Of Seas and Ships and Scientists by : John Gould
Download or read book Of Seas and Ships and Scientists written by John Gould and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures the excitement of a formative phase of UK science during and immediately following WWII. It links back to scientists working at Antarctic whaling stations and the complimentary voyages of Captain Scott's Discovery that explored the vast icy Southern Ocean, funded by a tax on whale oil. In the depths of WWII a small group of young scientists were brought together under the inspirational leadership of Dr (later Sir) George Deacon, and shortly after the end of the war, the UKis first National Institute of Oceanography was formed. The discoveries from 50 years ago underpin our modern-day science. The bookis chapters are all written and edited by NIO scientists and convey the atmosphere of work at sea in a bygone age before small computers, satellite navigation and easy communication. The book is A useful introduction for students of marine and/or environmental science. It will appeal to many scientists and the general public , to those interested in science and innovation during and after WWII and of course to many living in the Surrey who always wondered what went on in the leafy lanes that were home to NIO and its successors for almost 50 years.
