Book Synopsis Saints and Blesseds of the Americas by : Fr. Daniel P. Ewald
Download or read book Saints and Blesseds of the Americas written by Fr. Daniel P. Ewald and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-02-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kirkus Discoveries book review: Part devotional guide, part encyclopedia, Saints and Blesseds of the Americas will find a welcome place on the shelves of a new generation of Catholics. Ewalds tidy collection provides an exhaustive, country-by-country listing of all the Catholic saints and blesseds of the Western world. In Catholic theology, saints serve as intercessors between humanity and God; blessedsthose who have undergone the process of beatificationare only one step away from becoming saints. Believers pray to either for aid in any number of life pursuits. Perhaps the most gratifying aspect of this catalogue is the fact that it is extremely up to date. Ewald provides not only the saints and blesseds of old but also those recently beatified and canonized. For example, he presents the Blessed Lindalva Justo de Oliveira, martyred in 1993 and beatified by Pope Benedict XVI just last year. This is a timely reference guide at least in part because the previous popeJohn Paul IIwas a prolific supporter of the path to sainthood. According to the Vatican, Pope John Paul II beatified and canonized more individuals than all the popes of the past five centuries combined. Thus, Ewald fulfills an important role in bringing his devout readership up to speed. But currentness is not the volumes only strength. Ewald paints quick but thorough sketches of his many subjects. His brief biographies never run much more than a page or two, but he has an eye for the fine points, and his portraits are always extremely pertinentthere are as few wasted details as there are wasted words. However, though his book serves best as a reference volume, it also provides a surprisingly gratifying reading experience. Ewald has the skill of a storyteller, and each biography features a neat narrative arc. A helpful compendium to the heroes of the American Catholic Church. Ewald, Fr. Daniel P. Download or read book Weaving Hope written by Janice Farnham and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving Hope is a narrative history of one group of Catholic women religious in the United States. From Quebec, Canada, in 1877 the Religious of Jesus and Mary arrived as missionaries to teach children of French-Canadian immigrants in textile industries of New England. Their ministry spread to New York, Maryland, the South, and the West. Primarily educators, they directed academies and parish schools. In the South and Southwest, they added pastoral outreach to their educational ministry. With few resources, the sisters overcame diverse challenges to create a network of service from coast to coast. This book presents the challenges they faced from local hierarchy and clergy, as well as ethnic prejudices, language difficulties, classism, and financial insecurity. Their faith and bold courage are displayed in this vibrant tapestry of a small but significant piece of women's history in our nation.
Book Synopsis Something New with Saint Thérèse by : Suzie Andres
Download or read book Something New with Saint Thérèse written by Suzie Andres and published by Little Way Books. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though St. Thérèse of Lisieux lived a short, hidden life in a Carmelite monastery in a small town in France, she predicted that after her death the whole world would love her and promised to send a shower of roses, spending her Heaven doing good upon earth until the end of time. True to her word, the Little Flower has favored countless souls with her friendship, and her name and image can be found in every corner of the earth. Pope St. Pius X called her “the greatest Saint of modern times,” and the nine popes following him have all endorsed her Little Way of Spiritual Childhood. She is the Patroness of the missions alongside St. Francis Xavier, Patroness of France with St. Joan of Arc, and in 1997, Pope St. John Paul II named her the 33rd Doctor of the Church. And yet after 120 years of this young nun’s universal acclaim, author Suzie Andres has found something brand new to say about St. Thérèse. Taking a little known petition from Thérèse’s Act of Oblation to Merciful Love, the author reveals a Eucharistic miracle that the Little Flower not only lived, but promoted among those close to her. This book begins with an explanation of St. Thérèse’s Eucharistic miracle, and goes on to find evidence of this miracle in the lives of other great Saints, from Margaret Mary to Padre Pio. The author then uses Thérèse’s own arguments to prove that this particular grace, as well as the Act of Oblation to Merciful Love, is meant for all little souls. Something New with St. Thérèse is an invitation to readers to take further steps along the Little Way and into the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.

Book Synopsis Wife, Mother and Mystic by : Albert Bessières
Download or read book Wife, Mother and Mystic written by Albert Bessières and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When people come to examine your conduct closely, every individual must be able to convince himself that it is possible to serve God in all states and conditions of life without the performance of great exterior penances, provided only one fight vigorously against one's passions and conforms oneself in all things to the holy will of God." These words of Our Lady to Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi convey the fundamental import of this book. Wife, Mother and Mystic is the story of Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi, a woman singled out at the age of twenty-one, to receive revelations from Our Lord and the Blessed Mother, which continued until her death. Despite these miraculous gifts, she was content to fulfill her station in life as a wife, and mother of seven children. Though her spiritual wisdom was sought after by the most prominent figures, she sought first to expiate the sins of her fellow men by performing her domestic duties with the utmost love and sacrifice. Wife, Mother and Mystic chronicles the events of an extraordinary life and yet, the great lesson of this biography is not found in the extraordinary, but in this modest woman's constant, hidden striving after holiness in her most ordinary tasks.
