Download or read book Marie-Jo Lafontaine written by Otto Neumaier and published by Cantz Editions. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1987 the Belgian artist Marie-Jo Lafontaine created Les larmes d'acier (Steel Tears) for documenta 8 in Kassel - a video sculpture which aroused greater interest than might have been expected and which made a lasting impression on all who saw it. This was the international breakthrough for an artist whose work had already been widely recognised, but who was now acclaimed for her work heralding new dimenions in video art." "Following Immaculata, published by Cantz in 1992, we now present this monograph. It has been produced in close co-operation with the artist and covers the various aspects of her work over the last fifteen years. This has been concerned above all with the existential conditions of human existence - portrayed in video sculptures, spatial installations, photoworks with monochrome painting and text. Carefully selected visual material, texts and quotations from writers and philosophers draw a complex portrait of this artistic personality, as sensitive as it is powerful."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hot Art, Cold War – Southern and Eastern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990 is one of two text anthologies that trace the reception of American art in Europe during the Cold War era through primary sources. Translated into English for the first time from sixteen languages and introduced by scholarly essays, the texts in this volume offer a representative selection of the diverse responses to American art in Portugal, Italy, Spain, Greece, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Soviet Union (including the Baltic States), Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, and East Germany (GDR). There was no single European discourse, as attitudes to American art were determined by a wide range of ideological, political, social, cultural and artistic positions that varied considerably across the European nations. This volume and its companion, Hot Art, Cold War – Northern and Western European Writing on American Art 1945-1990, offer the reader a unique opportunity to compare how European art writers introduced and explained contemporary American art to their many and varied audiences. Whilst many are fluent in one or two foreign languages, few are able to read all twenty-five languages represented in the two volumes. These ground-breaking publications significantly enrich the fields of American art studies and European art criticism.

This book was released on 2015-10-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we could foretell the future through art? "More than any other activity, art will help to convince us of the urgency. This is its greatness and will be its responsibility, as art lies at the forefront of boldness" (Jacques Attali). The meeting of an essay, A Brief History of the Future by Jacques Attali, and the world of contemporary art on the occasion of the exhibition organized by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (11.09.2015 – 24.01.2016). This book explores the major social issues studied by Jacques Attali and points out how visual artists go beyond simple observation to take an active part in the debate and develop projects fired by a form of utopian creativity. Making museums the mirror of a world in change EXCERPT The first wave is the decline of the American empire, which is no longer omnipotent. It represents a declining share of global GDP and will even be overtaken by China, Europe and others, even if it long remains the world’s leading military power. This decline will also correspond to a lack of the cutting-edge collaborative technologies that lead to new discoveries, in particular the information technologies, biotechnologies, and so on, which will change a lot of things. There will be changes in customs, but these will probably contribute to the permanent triumph of the United States’ ideology as the dominant one in the world. The second wave is produced by the US gradually sharing its dominance with other powers. This process has already begun through the establishment of the G20. The joint government of the world is a response to the fragmentation that is taking place. No doubt we shall see conflicts between China and Japan, tension between Europe and the United States, times when the whole lot will be at loggerheads. We may well be experiencing the last period in history in which conflicts between great nations still take place. ABOUT JACQUES ATTALI Economist, writer, member of the Council of State, special adviser to François Mitterrand from 1981 to 1991, Jacques Attali was born in 1943 in Alger. Over his career he has published more than 50 books and written many articles on current events. He is also the editorial writer of L'Express.

Book Synopsis ART and the MIND – Ernst H. GOMBRICH by : Sybille Moser-Ernst

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst H. Gombrich, the Art Historian, master of both Continental thought and English language, became one of the world's most well-known representatives of the discipline. Half a century ago his testable theories transformed thinking on how to look at art. After only a few years during which semiotics appeared to render Sir Ernst's common-sense framework outdated, the rise of cognitive approaches has enabled him to recover internationally the status he once had in France as a radical thinker within modern philosophy. This book explores Gombrich's intellectual legacy by analysing some of the concepts and insights in the context of Image Science, the "Steckenpferd". The international contributors are original authorities in their own right, among them some of Gombrich's former students.
Book Synopsis Ephemeral Monuments by : Marina Pugliese

Book excerpt: This is an indispensible volume for creators, curators, and conservators of installation art. Installation art is an evolving, often ephemeral medium that defies rigid categorization. It has also radically transformed the concepts of space, time, and the experience of art. The conservation field is faced with unique challenges over how best to manage and preserve the essence of these works. How detailed can documentation get? When does the replacement of original components become acceptable? How does the field cope with the obsolescence of certain technologies? By exploring the questions and dilemmas facing those who care for art installations, this book intends to raise awareness and promote discussion about the various conservation approaches for these works.
