Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marcus Aurelius Antoninus As to the authorities consulted, I have sought to make use of all that has been written on my subject, whether in ancient or in modern times. The variety of my materials may be seen by referring to the bibliography inserted immediately before the Index to this volume. While I have endeavored to make the list as complete as possible, I am aware that some works of recent date may possibly have escaped my notice. It is hoped, however, that everything has been examined which was written on my subject previously to the sixteenth century. Should it be found that my inquiries have been at all success ful in presenting a truer view of Marcus Aurelius than has hitherto prevailed, the credit must be given' mainly to the kindness and efficiency of the officers of the Harvard College Library. I wish, also, to express my deep obligations to the Boston Public Library and to the Boston Athenaeum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. D. 135 Emperor Hadrian adopted as his son and successor Lucius Ceionius Commodus, who bore also the names of Aurelius and of Annius Verus. Roman nobles of this time often boasted a long string of family appellations. As a rule only two of these were employed, but the same individual might use a different pair at different times, or the son, for distinction's sake, might use one pair, while his father had used another. Partly for this reason, partly because his pedigree is not given, we do not know exactly who Commodus was. But he would seem to have been related on the one side to the Aurelian house, which drew its origin from Nimes in Southern Gaul, on the other to that of Annius Verus, which came, like Trajan and Hadrian, from Spain. Most probably he was related to Hadrian. Certainly he cannot have been selected on the ground of his personal merits. Commodus was a handsome and gentlemanly debauchee, who had never distinguished himself in any way whatever; and was moreover, at the time of his adoption, in the last stage of consumption. But Hadrian was strongly attached to him. Gibbon and others have spoken of adoption as an excellent method for ensuring the succession of a competent Emperor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The XII Books of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, the Emperor It was the doctrine of Marcus Aurelius that most of the ills of life come to us from our own imagination, that it was not in the power of others seriously to interfere with the calm, temperate life of an individual, and that when a fellow being did anything to us that seemed unjust he was acting in ignorance, and that instead of stirring up anger within us it should stirs our pity for him. Oftentirnes by careful self-examination we should find that the fault was more our own than that of our fellow, and our sufferings were rather from our own opinions than from anything real. The circle of man's knowledge is very limited, and the largest circles do not wholly include the smallest. They are intersecting and the segment common to any two is very small. Whatever lies outside this Space does not exist for both. Hence arise innumerable contests. The man having the largest intelligence ought to be very generous to the other. Being thankful that he has been blessed in so many ways, he should do all in his power to enlighten his less favored fellow, rather than be angry with him on account of his misfortune. Is he not sufficiently punished in being denied the light? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Book of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus But Stoicism has an interest deeper than this. If the pressing need of to-day is to find a place for higher beliefs beside practical interests and the Obligation of accepting scientific truth, in Stoicism not only is an attempt made to satisfy like conditions, but in it a religious Spirit which has many links Of connection with ours is fused on the one hand with a practical spirit akin to ours, and on the other with a reasoned body of science. Each of these aspects of the system suggests some remarks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At this date the child has all its organs; it is sundered from its mother; henceforward it will live its own life. The death of Marcus Aurelius, moreover, can be considered as marking the close of ancient civilisation. What of excellence is achieved after this is no longer achieved by the hellenic-roman principle; the judeo-syrian principle wins the day, and, although more than a hundred years are to elapse before its complete triumph, there is already no doubt that to it belongs the future. The third century is the death agony of a world which, in the second, has still been full of life and strength. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius: Translated; With His Life, and an Essay on His Philosophy by the Translator Hadrian died in July a.d. 138, and was succeeded by Antoninus Pius. M. Antoninus married Faustina, his cousin, the daughter of Pius, probably about a.d. 146, for he had a daughter born in 147. M. Antoninus received from his adoptive father the title of Caesar and was asso ciated with him in the administration of the state. The father and the adopted son lived together in perfect friend ship and confidence. Antoninus was a dutiful son, and the Emperor Pius loved and esteemed him. Antoninus Pius died in March a.d. 161. The Senate, it is said, urged M. Antoninus to take the sole administra tion of the empire, but he associated with himself the other adopted son of Pius, L. Ceionius Commodus, who is gener ally called L. Verus. Thus Rome for the first time had two emperors. Verus was an indolent man of pleasure and unworthy of his station. Antoninus however bore with him, and it is said that Verus had sense enough to pay to his colleague the respect due to his character. A virtuous emperor and a loose partner lived together in peace, and their alliance was strengthened by Antoninus giving to Verus for wife his daughter Lucilla. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoughts of the Emperor M. Aurelius Antoninus M. Antoninus was born at Rome a.d. 121, on April 26. His father Annius Verus died while he was praetor. His mother was Domitia Calvilla also named Lucilla. The Emperor T. Antoninus Pius married Annia Galeria Faustina, the sister of Annius Verus, and was consequently M. Antoninus' uncle. When Hadrian adopted Antoninus Pius and declared him his successor in the empire, Antoninus Pius adopted both L. Ceionius Commodus, the son of Aelius Caesar, and M. Antoninus, whose original name was M. Annius Verus. Antoninus took the name of M. Aelius Aurelius Verus, to which was added the title of Caesar in a.d. 139: the name Aelius belonged to Hadrian's family, and Aurelius was the name of Antoninus Pius. When M. Antoninus became Augustus, he dropped the name of Verus and took the name of Antoninus. Accordingly he is generally named M. Aurelius Antoninus or simply M. Antoninus. The youth was most carefully brought up. He thanks the gods (i, 17) that he had good grandfathers, good parents, a good sister, good teachers, good associates, good kinsmen and friends, nearly everything good. He had the happy fortune to witness the example of his uncle and adoptive father Antoninus Pius, and he has recorded in his work (i, 16; vi, 30) the virtues of this excellent man and prudent ruler. Like many young Romans he tried his hand at poetry and studied rhetoric. Herodes Atticus and M. Cornelius Fronto were his teachers in eloquence.
