Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something pleased him and as he stood before the counter in the shop he laughed and whistled softly. With a wink at the Reverend Minot Weeks who stood by the door leading to the street, he tapped with his knuckles on the showcase. “It has,” he said, waving attention to the boy, who was making a mess of the effort to arrange Uncle Charlie's loaf into a neat package, “a pretty name. They call it Norman—Norman McGregor.” Uncle Charlie laughed heartily and again stamped upon the floor. Putting his finger to his forehead to suggest deep thought, he turned to the minister. “I am going to change all that,” he said. “Norman indeed! I shall give him a name that will stick! Norman! Too soft, too soft and delicate for Coal Creek, eh? It shall be rechristened. You and I will be Adam and Eve in the garden naming things. We will call it Beaut—Our Beautiful One—Beaut McGregor.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherwood Anderson: An American Career is the first critical introduction to this important Midwestern and American writer in over a quarter century. While reevaluating the accomplishments in Winesburg, Ohio and Anderson's other novels and short stories, it pays more attention to his non-fictional, autobiographical, and journalistic writing than do previous studies. It draws on unpublished manuscripts in the Newberry Library Anderson papers that shed new light on a prolific career, manuscripts such as Talbott Whittingham and An Ohio Paper.

Book Synopsis Sherwood Anderson by : Walter B. Rideout
Download or read book Sherwood Anderson written by Walter B. Rideout and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherwood Anderson: A Writer in America is the definitive biography of this major American writer of novels and short stories, whose work includes the modern classic Winesburg, Ohio. In the first volume of this monumental two-volume work, Walter Rideout chronicles the life of Anderson from his birth and his early business career through his beginnings as a writer and finally to his move in the mid-1920s to “Ripshin,” his house near Marion, Virginia. The second volume will cover Anderson’s return to business pursuits, his extensive travels in the South touring factories, which resulted in his political involvement in labor struggles and several books on the topic, and finally his unexpected death in 1941. No other existing Anderson biography, the most recent of which was published nearly twenty years ago, is as thoroughly researched, so extensively based on primary sources and interviews with a range of Anderson friends and family members, or as complete in its vision of the man and the writer. The result is an unparalleled biography—one that locates the private man, while astutely placing his life and writings in a broader social and political context. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine Winner, Biography Award, Society of Midland Authors

Book Synopsis Gazetteer of Scottish and Irish Ghosts by : Peter Underwood
Download or read book Gazetteer of Scottish and Irish Ghosts written by Peter Underwood and published by Peter Underwood. This book was released on 1973 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gazetteer of Scottish and Irish Ghosts is the first comprehensive collection of ghostly legends and modern reports of ghosts and hauntings through the Highlands, Lowlands and Isles of Scotland and the whole of Ireland. Here are such varied phenomena as the ‘big grey man of Ben MacDhui’ - the haunted mountain vouched for by professors, doctors and mountaineers of considerable standing; or the curious disturbances at the Edinburgh home of Sir Alexander Seton - subsequent to his wife’s removing an ancient bone from an Egyptian tomb. Do you know where a vampire lurks in the shadows of a ruined church? Where giant footsteps cause panic to hardened climbers? Where the red glow of battle shines annually? Where corpses whisper? These and many other strange stories, legends and authentic accounts of ghostly happenings have been catalogued alphabetically for easy reference. In addition to presenting a profusion of fascinating reports from the towns and valleys, lochs and lakes, mountains and rivers, historic castles and houses of these lovely countries, Peter Underwood draws on his twenty-five years of study and practical investigation to describe a rich patchwork of reported happenings that cannot be explained in material or scientific terms. All in all, A Gazetteer of Scottish and Irish Ghosts provides a unique reference book and guide to the ghost population of these lands. The result of many years study, it is a worthy successor to the earlier Gazetteer of British Ghosts by the same author.

Book Synopsis Marching Masters by : Colin Edward Woodward
Download or read book Marching Masters written by Colin Edward Woodward and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate army went to war to defend a nation of slaveholding states, and although men rushed to recruiting stations for many reasons, they understood that the fundamental political issue at stake in the conflict was the future of slavery. Most Confederate soldiers were not slaveholders themselves, but they were products of the largest and most prosperous slaveholding civilization the world had ever seen, and they sought to maintain clear divisions between black and white, master and servant, free and slave. In Marching Masters Colin Woodward explores not only the importance of slavery in the minds of Confederate soldiers but also its effects on military policy and decision making. Beyond showing how essential the defense of slavery was in motivating Confederate troops to fight, Woodward examines the Rebels’ persistent belief in the need to defend slavery and deploy it militarily as the war raged on. Slavery proved essential to the Confederate war machine, and Rebels strove to protect it just as they did Southern cities, towns, and railroads. Slaves served by the tens of thousands in the Southern armies—never as soldiers, but as menial laborers who cooked meals, washed horses, and dug ditches. By following Rebel troops' continued adherence to notions of white supremacy into the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras, the book carries the story beyond the Confederacy’s surrender. Drawing upon hundreds of soldiers’ letters, diaries, and memoirs, Marching Masters combines the latest social and military history in its compelling examination of the last bloody years of slavery in the United States.
