Book excerpt: Kia ora - I'm Marama, an Australian-German Maori girl who lives far away from its actual roots. In a beautiful country called Australia I decided to be born in1969 into this world. One needs of course, at that time a mother and a father. As we design our lives ,even create, plan and determine before we ever decide to admit on a journey into the "world of Oblivion" .I needed for my project the appropriate parents. Every soul that decides wants to perform a specific task that lies in its ability range, to the people and Mother Earth, and ultimately the light to come closer. This is our source from each, whether human, animal or plant is created.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on food security and safety issues in Africa, a continent presently challenged with malnutrition and food insecurity. The continuous increase in the human population of Africa will lead to higher food demands, and climate change has already affected food production in most parts of Africa, resulting in drought, reduced crop yields, and loss of livestock and income. For Africa to be food-secure, safe and nutritious food has to be available, well-distributed, and sufficient to meet people’s food requirements. Contributors to Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives offer solutions to the lack of adequate safe and nutritious food in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as highlight the positive efforts being made to address this lack through a holistic approach. The book discusses the various methods used to enhance food security, such as food fortification, fermentation, genetic modification, and plant breeding for improved yield and resistance to diseases. Authors emphasize the importance of hygiene and food safety in food preparation and preservation, and address how the constraints of climate change could be overcome using smart crops. As a comprehensive reference text, Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives seeks to address challenges specific to the African continent while enhancing the global knowledge base around food security, food safety, and food production in an era of rapid climate change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Protein Sources: Advances for a Healthier Tomorrow, Second Edition explores alternative proteins, including plant, fungal, algal and insect proteins that can take the place of meat as sustainable sources to satisfy human protein needs. This revised edition presents the benefits of plant and alternative protein consumption, including those that benefit the environment, population, and consumer trends and contains new chapters on potato protein, faba bean, chickpea, and coconut. Organized by protein, chapters also cover cereals and legumes, oilseeds, pseudocereals, fungi, algae, insects and fermentation-derived dairy and meat proteins paying particular attention to the nutrition, uses, functions, benefits, and challenges of each. The book also explores ways to improve utilization and addresses everything from consumer acceptability, methods of improving the taste of products containing these proteins and ways in which policies can affect the use of alternate proteins. In addition, the book addresses sustainable protein as a pathway to securing the food supply and considers regenerative versus extractive agriculture alongside new methods in farming and water usage. - Introduces the need to shift from animal-derived to plant-based protein and fermentation derived proteins - Discusses nutritive values of each protein source and compares each alternate protein to more complete proteins - Provides an overview of production, including processing, protein isolation, use cases and functionality

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Academy of Sciences report describes plants of the family Leguminosae, all of them greatly underexploited. Some are extensively used in one part of the world but unknown elsewhere; others are virtually unknown to science but have particular attributes that suggest they could become major crops in the future; a few are already widespread but their possibilities are not yet fully realized. Most of the plants described in this book have the capacity to provide their own nitrogenous fertilizer through bacteria that live in nodules on their roots; the bacteria chemically convert nitrogen gas from the air into soluble compounds that the plant can absorb and utilize. As a result, legumes generally require no additional nitrogenous fertilizer for average growth. This is advantageous because commercial nitrogenous fertilizers are now extremely expensive for peasant farmers. This report demonstrates how farmers in developing countries, by using leguminous plants, can grow useful crops while avoiding that expense. However, the plants to be discussed here should be seen as complements to, not as substitutes for, conventional tropical crops.
