Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By discussing the work of Thomas Hardy, Richard Jefferies, John Cowper Powys and Mary Butts, Mapping the Wessex Novel imaginatively maps and excavates various districts of the 'west country' so as radically to redefine the 'parochial'; while being keenly aware of their own status as natives locked into complex histories of self-exile and return, estrangement and ardent identification. Contributing to the growing research on space and place in Victorian and Modernist writing, Radford uses the analysis of these writers as a lens through which to inspect the relationship between rural periphery and metropolitan centre; contested ideologies of 'Englishness' and the form of the national past.

Book Synopsis Reading and Mapping Fiction by : Sally Bushell
Download or read book Reading and Mapping Fiction written by Sally Bushell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we map as we read? How central to our experience of literature is the way in which we spatialise and visualise a fictional world? Reading and Mapping Fiction offers a fresh approach to the interpretation of literary space and place centred upon the emergence of a fictional map alongside the text in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bringing together a range of new and emerging theories, including cognitive mapping and critical cartography, Bushell compellingly argues that this activity, whatever it is called – mapping, diagramming, visualising, spatialising – is a vital and intrinsic part of how we experience literature, and of what makes it so powerful. Drawing on both the theory and history of literature and cartography, this richly illustrated study opens up understanding of spatial meaning and interpretation in new ways that are relevant to both more traditional academic scholarship and to newly emerging digital practices.

This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Well-Beloved: A Sketch of a Temperament is a novel by Thomas Hardy, serialized in 1892, and published as a book in 1897. The main setting of the novel, the Isle of Slingers, is based on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, southern England. Many of Hardy's novels were set in Dorset. The Well Beloved is one of Hardy's last novels. It was first published in three-part serial form in 1892, and then revised and re-published as a book in 1897, after Hardy's last novel Jude the Obscure (1895). The novel tells the story of the sculptor Jocelyn Pierston's search for the ideal woman, through three generations of a Portland family.A cottage housing what is now part of Portland Museum, on the Isle of Portland, founded by Marie Stopes, a friend of Hardy and his wife, was an inspiration for the book. The cottage acted as the home of Avice, the novel's heroine.Thomas Hardy, OM (2 June 1840 - 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth. Charles Dickens was another important influence.Like Dickens, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society, though Hardy focused more on a declining rural society. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, therefore, he gained fame as the author of novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). Hardy's poetry, though prolific, was not as well received during his lifetime. It was rediscovered in the 1950s, when Hardy's poetry had a significant influence on the Movement poets of the 1950s and 1960s, including Philip LarkinMost of his fictional works - initially published as serials in magazines - were set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex. They explored tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances. Hardy's Wessex is based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom and eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England.........

Download or read book Prehistoric Wessex written by David Platt and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When novelist and poet Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) fictionalized the region of England in which he lived, he revived the name of a long extinct Anglo-Saxon kingdom. His Wessex was a rich combination of past, present, and future, showing traditional rural life under assault from the forces of industrialization. The region's prehistoric monuments play a prominent role in his semi-imaginary geography, helping him to resuscitate in his own time the memory of a bygone agrarian England. The earliest of the monuments date from the Neolithic, a period between roughly 4000 and 2000 BC/ BCE, in which the landscape was first reshaped by its inhabitants in an increasingly complex series of interventions—the creation of long barrows, causewayed enclosures, henges, and avenues that connected key structures. Hardy, reworking an already reworked Wessex, is only the most famous to conceptualize this region. Prehistoric Wessex: Towards a Deep Map draws on the resources of the Rare Book & Manuscript, Fine Arts, and other Penn Libraries departments, juxtaposing materials from the libraries' diverse collections that both reveal and contribute to the ongoing construction of Wessex in the cultural imaginary.

Book Synopsis Thomas Hardy's Pastoral by : Indy Clark
Download or read book Thomas Hardy's Pastoral written by Indy Clark and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reads Hardy's poetry of the rural as deeply rooted in the historical tradition of the pastoral mode even as it complicates and extends it. It shows that in addition to reinstating the original tensions of classical pastoral, Hardy dramatizes a heightened awareness of complex communities and the relations of class, labour, and gender.
