Book excerpt: "A report on the first round of [a] major longitudinal survey on social cohesion in Australia has been released. The report, 'Mapping Social Cohesion', provides insights to community attitudes to immigration, multiculturalism and social cohesion. These are based on findings from specially-commissioned national and local surveys. Topics that are covered include: our sense of belonging, how happy we are, how satisfied we are financially, and how much we trust in politicians, public institutions and other people. The report also examines complex attitudes to immigration and multicultural society, including assistance to ethnic groups, and levels of discrimination. It also examines the degree of disaffection in our community."--Publisher website.

The report builds on the knowledge gained through the six earlier Scanlon Foundation national surveys (2007, 2009-2013) which provide, for the first time in Australian social research, a series of detailed surveys on social cohesion, immigration and population issues. Together with Scanlon Foundation local area and subgroup surveys, thirteen surveys with some 24,000 respondents have been conducted since 2007. The project also tracks the findings of other Australian and international surveys on population and social cohesion."--Scanlon Foundation website.

Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of the ninth Scanlon Foundation Mapping Social Cohesion survey, conducted across Australia in July-August 2016, in the weeks immediately after the federal election. 1,500 adults were surveyed regarding social cohesion, immigration, asylum seekers and resettlement, attitudes to Muslim immigration, multiculturalism, experience of discrimination, social and institutional trust, participation in voluntary work, trust, economic concerns, and democracy. The findings are compared across generations and across previous years of the survey. In contrast to many current commentators, the survey's findings suggest stability rather than significant change in opinion. However, there are emerging signs of increased pessimism, with relatively high levels of negativity towards Muslims, an increase in the proportion of people experiencing racial and religious discrimination, and concern at the failure of the political system.

Book excerpt: "The 2009 survey was conducted in a period of declining economic confidence, with predictions that Australia, along with all Western economies, would face the most severe challenges since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Despite the economic concerns, the Australian government maintained a large immigration program. During recessions in the 1980s and 1990s negative views of immigration had risen sharply; this experience raised the expectation that the 2009 survey would reveal a marked change in opinion since the optimistic times of 2007 when the first social cohesion survey was conducted."--Scanlon foundation.

Book excerpt: Australia's reputation as a successful large scale immigrant-receiving nation is well formed. In the latest wave, not only have millions of diverse people arrived in the post-war period from 1945 to a growing, high income, good employment economy; but the society absorbing them has remained stable and cohesive. This is not to say that it has been entirely plain sailing - sensitive debate, isolated interethnic violence, and the degree of migrant ghettoisation have been prominent, though varying in intensity over time. But overall, the planned program of immigration and settlement by Australia's governments over the years has been successful. This volume examines key elements of the means by which social cohesion can be constructively sought in Australia. With contributions from some of Australia's leading experts in this field, this book addresses the key concern: what are the threats to Australia's social cohesion and how can they be countered?

Download or read book Creating Social Cohesion in an Interdependent World written by Tetsuo Mizukami and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Social Cohesion in an Interdependent World examines the ways in which two very different societies, Australia and Japan, have dealt with challenges to their cultural and institutional fabric, as well as the social cohesion arising from the acceleration of global interdependence during recent decades. Deepening globalization has generated great social dislocation and uncertainty about collective identity and to anxiety about how to accommodate apparently unstoppable external influences. The studies in this volume explore areas which have experienced significant impact from globalization, including immigration policy, ethnic and racial intermarriage, attitudes towards ethnic and racial minorities, national and cultural identity, education policy and labor relations. The approach used is innovative in juxtaposing two societies which, although developed, are contrasting in their historical origins and contemporary cultural legacies.
