Book excerpt: Abstract: "NCHRP Research Report 842 deals with two primary objectives: (1) determining height distributions and spectral content for heavy vehicle noise sources and (2) establishing and beginning development of an extended heavy vehicle (truck and bus) noise source database for incorporation into traffic noise models, including future versions of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Transportation Noise Model (TNM) acoustical code. To accomplish these objectives, the researchers collected data by sampling commonly used heavy vehicles representing the current national fleet across the country. The research used data collection and analysis methods reflecting the current state of technology in acoustic beamforming. Heavy vehicles (trucks and buses) are significant contributors to overall traffic noise levels; noise from one heavy truck is equivalent to noise from about 10 passenger cars. Therefore, a thorough understanding of how heavy vehicles emit noise is crucial to predicting and mitigating traffic noise. In addition, noise from heavy vehicles comes from various sources (e.g., exhaust stacks, muffler shells, exhaust pipes, drivetrains, air intakes, cooling fans, tires, and aerodynamic characteristics). The relative contributions of these sources vary with vehicle type, operating conditions, and (for tire noise) the type of pavement. Understanding how these components contribute is important to being able to forecast heavy vehicle contribution to overall traffic noise."

Book excerpt: This manual provides direction for the preparation of noise and vibration sections of environmental documents for mass transportation projects. The manual has been developed in the interest of promoting quality and uniformity in assessments. It is expected to be used by people associated with or affected by the urban transit industry, including Federal Transit Administration (FTA) staff, grant applicants, consultants and the general public. Each of these groups has an interest in noise/vibration assessment, but not all have the need for all the details of the process. Consequently, this manual has been prepared to serve readers with varying levels of technical background and interests. It sets forth the basic concepts, methods and procedures for documenting the extent and severity of noise impacts from transit projects.

Book excerpt: Noise mapping is the first tool to effectively assess noise exposure, communicating information to citizens, and defining effective action plans for protecting citizens from high noise levels and preserving quiet areas in urban European Community environments. Indeed, strategic noise maps are now required in the European Union for all population centers of more than 250,000 inhabitants, as well as for major roads, railways, and airports, and are becoming required for urban areas with over 100,000 people. Providing a comprehensive reference guide for students, researchers, acoustics consultants, and environmental agencies, Noise Mapping in the EU: Models and Procedures shows how to integrate data with geographical information systems, improve accuracy in model and prediction software, and assess different methods and descriptors for evaluating annoyance and noise exposure. It offers guidance on regulations, communication processes, physical aspects, and application of noise mapping, as well as on communication processes for citizens involved in decision making. Beginning with fundamental concepts in acoustics and a presentation of legal frameworks for noise mapping in Europe, the book covers all the main issues about noise mapping. It presents numerical models for roads, railways, airports, harbours, and industrial sites. The chapters are written by European experts from a range of research institutes, companies, and environmental agencies. Using a practical approach and worked examples, the text discusses control and uncertainty in input data and output results, technical recommendations from working groups, and the Good Practice Guide (GPG) tool. It provides in-depth coverage of geographic information system (GIS) techniques for noise management and the evaluation and management of noise exposure, and concludes by reviewing noise mapping experiences in Europe, communication to the public, and future perspectives for mapping the effects of noise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods of assessing noise, loudness, and noise annoyance are reviewed and explained; sources, types, and intensities of traffic noise are noted; typical means of abatement and attenuation are described; design criteria for various land uses ranging from low-density to industrial are suggested and compared with the results of previous BBN and British systems for predicting annoyance and complaint; and a design guide for predicting traffic noise, capable of being programmed for batch and on-line computer applications, is presented in form suitable for use as a working tool. A flow diagram describes the interrelationships of elements in the traffic noise prediction methodology, and each element is discussed in detail in the text. The text is presented of a tape recording that takes the listener through a series of traffic situations, with such variables as traffic distance, flow velocity, distance, outdoors and indoors, and presence or absence of absorbers and attenuators.
