This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the different translations into Old French of Giles of Rome’s De regimine principum, dedicated to Philippe le Bel around 1279, and their readership. First-hand manuscript research has permitted us to understand not only the general context of their production but also the social conditions of their transmission and circulation. This work concentrates on different aspects of the reception of Giles of Rome’s pedagogical ideas by his “translators”, who are by no means passive in this process. This book provides not only a concrete idea of what Giles of Rome’s educational ideas became when mediated for the consumption of a lay public but also how the translators, in their translations, supported the transmission of re-appropriated knowledge.

Download or read book Meanings and Functions of the Ruler's Image in the Mediterranean World (11th – 15th Centuries) written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (The open access version of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation.) The book proposes a reassessment of royal portraiture and its function in the Middle Ages via a comparative analysis of works from different areas of the Mediterranean world, where images are seen as only one outcome of wider and multifarious strategies for the public mise-en-scène of the rulers’ bodies. Its emphasis is on the ways in which medieval monarchs in different areas of the Mediterranean constructed their outward appearance and communicated it by means of a variety of rituals, object-types, and media. Contributors are Michele Bacci, Nicolas Bock, Gerardo Boto Varela, Branislav Cvetković, Sofia Fernández Pozzo, Gohar Grigoryan Savary, Elodie Leschot, Vinni Lucherini, Ioanna Rapti, Juan Carlos Ruiz Souza, Marta Serrano-Coll, Lucinia Speciale, Manuela Studer-Karlen, Mirko Vagnoni, and Edda Vardanyan.
Book Synopsis Manuscripts, Market and the Transition to Print in Late Medieval Brittany by : Diane E. Booton
Download or read book Manuscripts, Market and the Transition to Print in Late Medieval Brittany written by Diane E. Booton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuscripts, Market and the Transition to Print in Late Medieval Brittany surveys the production and marketing of non-monastic manuscripts and printed books over 150 years in late medieval Brittany, from the accession of the Montfort family to the ducal crown in 1364 to the duchy's formal assimilation by France in 1532. Brittany, as elsewhere, experienced the shift of manuscript production from monasteries to lay scriptoria and from rural settings to urban centers, as the motivation for copying the word in ink on parchment evolved from divine meditation to personal profit. Through her analysis of the physical aspects of Breton manuscripts and books, parchment and paper, textual layouts, scripts and typography, illumination and illustration, Diane Booton exposes previously unexplored connections between the tangible cultural artifacts and the society that produced, acquired and valued them. Innovatively, Booton's discussion incorporates archival research into the prices, wages and commissions associated with the manufacture of the works under discussion to shed new light on their economic and personal value.
Book Synopsis Politics and Institutions in Capetian France by : Elizabeth A.R.Brown
Download or read book Politics and Institutions in Capetian France written by Elizabeth A.R.Brown and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine essays in this volume by Elizabeth Brown deal with the development of representative institutions and monarchial power in Capetian France. One topic covered is that of the evolution of central assemblies, with case studies of the assemblies held between 1316 and 1321 illuminating the impact of theory on practice. A second topic is that of the moral implications of fiscality and of the attempts by French monarchs to regulate their policies by the teachings of moral philosophy. A particular theme is the Capetians’ insistence on reform as a central theme of good government, and their successes and failures living up to their principles. The articles also examine the realm’s reactions to the monarchy’s ideals and principles, emphasizing and attempting to account for the differences in attitude to government on the part of the ruler and ruled that distinguished medieval France and England.
