Book Synopsis MS. Found in a Bottle by : Edgar Allan Poe
Download or read book MS. Found in a Bottle written by Edgar Allan Poe and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A representative of Poe’s tales of the sea, "Ms. Found in a Bottle" follows the writer’s infatuation with the horrific and unknown forces around us. An avid reader just like his creator, the narrator finds solace within books and ancient lore, thus testing the limits of one’s imagination, and at the same time paving the road for further exploration of the unknown. Poe’s otherworldly narrative could easily fall in the same category as the sea voyages and tribulations described by later authors such as Herman Melville and Joseph Conrad. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, author, and literary critic. Most famous for his poetry, short stories, and tales of the supernatural, mysterious, and macabre, he is also regarded as the inventor of the detective genre and a contributor to the emergence of science fiction, dark romanticism, and weird fiction. His most famous works include "The Raven" (1945), "The Black Cat" (1943), and "The Gold-Bug" (1843).

Book excerpt: Praise for Notes from a Bottle Found on the Beach at Carmel: “A unique tour de force.” --The New York Times Book Review “One of the most remarkable books that I have read in a long time.” --Kenneth Rexroth “Mr. Connell’s Notes are what one intelligent, sensitive artist has been able to salvage from all experience as testimony to the rather pathetic integrity of the human species in the face of extinction. The book is no manual or tract, however, although its political meaning is unmistakable, but a work of art, even a work of high art.” --Hayden Carruth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released by Louisiana State University Press in 1980, A Confederacy of Dunces is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon. Rejected by countless publishers and submitted by the author's mother years after his suicide, the book won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Today there are almost two million copies in print worldwide in eighteen languages. Now, for the first time, John Kennedy Toole's comic masterpiece is available in a large print edition. Toole's lunatic and sage novel introduces one of the most memorable characters in American literature, Ignatius Reilly, whom Walker Percy dubs "slob extraordinaire, a mad Oliver Hardy, a fat Don Quixote, a perverse Thomas Aquinas rolled into one." Set in New Orleans, A Confederacy of Dunces outswifts Swift, one of whose essays gives the book its title. As its characters burst into life, they leave the region and literature forever changed by their presence -- Ignatius and his mother; Miss Trixie, the octogenarian assistant accountant at Levi Pants; inept, wan Patrolman Mancuso; Darlene, the Bourbon Street stripper with a penchant for poultry; Jones the jivecat in spaceage dark glasses. Included here is the introduction that writer and New Orleans resident Andrei Codrescu composed for the book's twentieth anniversary. Set in oversized type for ease in reading, the large print edition will gratify both first-timers seeking to discover this modern-day classic and longtime afficionados wishing to reread a favorite novel.

Book Synopsis Messages in a Bottle by : B. Krigstein
Download or read book Messages in a Bottle written by B. Krigstein and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Krigstein began his career as an unremarkable journeyman cartoonist during the 1940s and finished it as a respected fine artist and illustrator ― but comics historians know him for his explosively creative 1950s, during which he applied all the craft, intelligence and ambition of a burgeoning “serious” artist to his comics work, with results that remain stunning to this day. Krigstein’s legend rests mostly on the 30 or so stories he created for the EC Comics, but dozens of stories drawn for other, lesser publishers such as Rae Herman, Hillman, and Atlas (which would become Marvel) showcase his skills and radical reinterpretation of the comics page, in particular his groundbreaking slicing and dicing of time lapses through a series of narrow, nearly animated panels. Greg Sadowski, who has previously written and designed a Harvey Award-winning biography of Krigstein, has assembled the very best of Krigstein’s comics work, starting with his earliest creative rumblings, through his glory days at EC, to his final, even more brilliantly radical stories for Atlas Comics ― running through every genre popular at the time, be it horror, science fiction, war, western, or romance (but no super-heroes).

Download or read book We written by Yevgeny Zamyatin and published by Diamond Pocket Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We is a dystopian novel written by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. Originally drafted in Russian, the book could be published only abroad. It was translated into English in 1924. Even as the book won a wide readership overseas, the author's satiric depiction led to his banishment under Joseph Stalin's regime in the then USSR. The book's depiction of life under a totalitarian state influenced the other novels of the 20th century. Like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, We describes a future socialist society that has turned out to be not perfect but inhuman. Orwell claimed that Brave New World must be partly derived from We, but Huxley denied this. The novel is set in the future. D-503, a spacecraft engineer, lives in the One State which assists mass surveillance. Here life is scientifically managed. There is no way of referring to people except by their given numbers. The society is run strictly by reason as the primary justification for the construct of the society. By way of formulae and equations outlined by the One State, the individual's behaviour is based on logic.
