Book Synopsis China's Growing Role in World Trade by : Robert C. Feenstra
Download or read book China's Growing Role in World Trade written by Robert C. Feenstra and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In less than three decades, China has grown from playing a negligible role in international trade to being one of the world's largest exporters, a substantial importer of raw materials, intermediate outputs, and other goods, and both a recipient and source of foreign investment. Not surprisingly, China's economic dynamism has generated considerable attention and concern in the United States and beyond. While some analysts have warned of the potential pitfalls of China's rise—the loss of jobs, for example—others have highlighted the benefits of new market and investment opportunities for US firms. Bringing together an expert group of contributors, China's Growing Role in World Trade undertakes an empirical investigation of the effects of China's new status. The essays collected here provide detailed analyses of the microstructure of trade, the macroeconomic implications, sector-level issues, and foreign direct investment. This volume's careful examination of micro data in light of established economic theories clarifies a number of misconceptions, disproves some conventional wisdom, and documents data patterns that enhance our understanding of China's trade and what it may mean to the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: In recent years, much has been made of the success of developing countries, particularly in East Asia, which have achieved economic growth by manufacturing goods which are then exported to developed economies. Case studies of five countries uncover serious potential difficulties in maintaining the pace of manufacturing for export in the developing countries, and shows that there is no simple relationship between import liberalization and manufacturing for export.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology and globalization are threatening manufacturing’s traditional ability to deliver both productivity and jobs at a large scale for unskilled workers. Concerns about widening inequality within and across countries are raising questions about whether interventions are needed and how effective they could be. Trouble in the Making? The Future of Manufacturing-Led Development addresses three questions: - How has the global manufacturing landscape changed and why does this matter for development opportunities? - How are emerging trends in technology and globalization likely to shape the feasibility and desirability of manufacturing-led development in the future? - If low wages are going to be less important in defining competitiveness, how can less industrialized countries make the most of new opportunities that shifting technologies and globalization patterns may bring? The book examines the impacts of new technologies (i.e., the Internet of Things, 3-D printing, and advanced robotics), rising international competition, and increased servicification on manufacturing productivity and employment. The aim is to inform policy choices for countries currently producing and for those seeking to enter new manufacturing markets. Increased polarization is a risk, but the book analyzes ways to go beyond focusing on potential disruptions to position workers, firms, and locations for new opportunities. www.worldbank.org/futureofmanufacturing

Book Synopsis Trade as the Engine of Growth in Developing Countries by : James Riedel
Download or read book Trade as the Engine of Growth in Developing Countries written by James Riedel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1983 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a critique of the thesis propounded in W.A. Lewis' Nobel lecture that economic growth in developed countries is the main driving force of exports and growth in developing countries. The trade engine theory is shown to rest on highly restrictive assumptions which, it is argued, have become increasingly inappropriate as a consequence of far-reaching changes in the composition of LDC exports. Empirical analysis is undertaken to show that the main gear of the trade engine, the linkage between economic prosperity in developed countries and export growth of developing countries, is highly unstable and hence mechanically inefficient. The trade engine theory, it is argued, is no more applicable in recent decades than Kravis showed it was in the nineteenth century.
Book Synopsis Trends in International Trade in Manufactured Goods and Structural Change in the Industrial Countries by : Bela Balassa
Download or read book Trends in International Trade in Manufactured Goods and Structural Change in the Industrial Countries written by Bela Balassa and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines recent trends in trade in manufactured goods between the industrial and the developing countries and indicates the implications of these trends for structural change in the industrial countries. Part I provides information on changes over time in the current dollar value of trade in manufactured goods between the industrial and the developing countries. It further analyzes trends in the volume of trade in manufactured goods and the relative importance of trade with the developing countries for the manufacturing sector of the industrial nations. The commodity composition of trade in manufactured goods between the industrial and the developing countries is the subject of Part II. It examines the changing importance of trade in a seven commodity-group breakdown and covers the employment effects and conformity to the comparative advantage of the two groups of countries. The paper concludes with policy recommendations aimed at promoting international trade and structural change.
