Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Moral and Humane Education: June to September Inclusive Essay receiving William G. Sprague Memorial Prize from the American Humane Association, in 1908. Huxley says the ego is the center of the universe. This psychological assumption explains much in the problematical study of the history of man. Man begins life on a very simple basis as to his social environment. As an infant, not even his mother is at first recognized as a social factor in the self-absorbing processes of a tentative hold on life; but, as his nature unfolds, the extreme egoism of his early infancy gradually expands along radiating lines in all directions until we find the circumference bounding, in gradations, mother, family, home life, playmates, neighborhood, school life, municipality, his country, the world, the universe, until, in the highest form of human development, his egoism has expanded into an altruism broad in scope and elevated in character. Thinkers recognize that the individual man is an epitomized form of the race of man, - the stages of growth through infancy, youth, and maturity corresponding to the stages that racial man passes through from the primitive man of savagery to the highest type of civilization and progress. Book Synopsis Schooling the Daughters of Marianne by : Linda L. Clark
Download or read book Schooling the Daughters of Marianne written by Linda L. Clark and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length study of girls' primary education in France gives a concrete picture of how Frenchwomen were, and are, prepared for their roles in society. Until the 1960s, the primary school provided the only formal education for the majority of French children. Long recognized as a major inculcator of patriotic and moral values, the French primary school also played the vital role of preparing girls for their expected adult lives. Linda L. Clark describes in detail this socialization process. By analyzing a wide variety of documents from 1870 to the present--textbooks, curriculum materials, students' notebooks, examination questions, inspectors' reports, and teachers' memoirs--she has uncovered not only what was taught to girls, but the social and political assumptions that lay behind the primary school's messages about feminine personalities and activities. The book goes on to establish the relationship of feminine images to important aspects of French social, economic, and political life. A chapter on the preparation of girls for the world of work, for example, reveals the discrepancy between formal teaching about "femininity" and women's actual participation in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Principles in Education Manual training is more than manual; it is more than intellectual; in the hands of any good teacher it lends itself easily, and almost as a matter of course, to development of social habits. Ever since the philosophy of Kant it has been a commonplace in the theory of art, that one of its indispensable features is that it be universal, that is, that it should not be the product of any purely personal desire or appetite, or be capable of merely individual appropriation, but should have its value participated in by all who perceive it.
