Este manual le permite a los docentes crear un modelo práctico de evaluación que facilita la promoción y el éxito de los estudiantes. En la mayoría de países latinoamericanos se habla mucho de competencias, pero no se tiene bien claro que son y cómo aplicarlas en el contexto de la escuela y más complicado aún el cómo volverlas un elemento base para el proceso de evaluación. Este manual pretende ofrecer un enfoque o concepción básica de competencia en donde el docente en un lenguaje sencillo pueda entenderla en toda su esencia y aplicación. Otro aspecto importante de este manual está en ofrecer procedimientos que faciliten el proceso de evaluación en las instituciones educativas, acompañado de una serie de instrumentos que le permitan a las instituciones contar con herramientas que evidencien los avances de la evaluación en las instituciones, herramientas que le darán mayor forma al diseño curricular.

Es precisamente dicha postura crítica ante las formas habituales de evaluar y calificar en nuestra asignatura lo que nos impulsó, hace ya doce años, a desarrollar todo un sistema de evaluación que supusiera una alternativa ética, seria, viable y rigurosa frente a dicho modelo dominante. Desde entonces nuestro trabajo se ha centrado en ir puliendo y mejorando la propuesta y, sobre todo, desarrollando experiencias y recursos concretos que puedan facilitar su puesta en práctica. La hemos denominado "Evaluación Formativa y Compartida". Estamos, por tanto, ante una propuesta que ha sido contrastada en la práctica educativa, durante los últimos doce años, en un gran número de centros y diferentes etapas y contextos educativos. También ha sido ampliamente difundida, a través de cursos, ponencias, comunicaciones y artículos en revistas profesionales. En este sentido, entendemos que se trata de una propuesta que ha demostrado sobradamente su viabilidad en cualquier situación y contexto educativo. También ha sido de utilidad para otros compañeros de profesión que comparten con nosotros el mismo interés por desarrollar prácticas docentes y sistemas de evaluación más formativos y educativos. A lo largo de este trabajo hemos defendido el desarrollo de estrategias que favorezcan la realización de una evaluación formativa y compartida, así como la participación del alumnado en estos procesos, especialmente en lo referido a las formas colaborativas y compartidas. Para ello hemos presentado una serie de razones que existen para poner en práctica y potenciar este tipo de planteamientos, así como un amplio número de propuestas y experiencias de evaluación formativa y compartida en el área de Educación Física.
