Book excerpt: Long usage and extensive tests have established the suitability of properly inhibited ethylene glycol, methanol (methyl alcohol), and ethanol (ethyl alcohol) as antifreeze base materials. Mixtures of glycols, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or propylene glycol, as well as straight propylene glycol and mixtures of methanol and isopropyl alcohol have been used (2,5).1 Any statement regarding the suitability of glycol and alcohol antifreeze materials must not be construed as a generalization that all products containing them as base materials are satisfactory as engine coolants. None of the organic compounds meet the present-day standards of cooling system corrosion protection unless they contain suitable inhibitors. For this reason, any new or untried products should be evaluated by adequate service tests before receiving unqualified acceptance.
