Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Practical Ophthalmology Ophthalmology has long held a foremost place amongst the various branches of Medicine. In diagnosis, as well as in treatment, it had already attained to a high degree of precision at a time when modern scientific methods had as yet barely begun to foreshadow the results which they are now almost daily achieving in other departments. Having thus early taken a leading position, the possibilities of further advance seem in the meantime to have been proportionately restricted. Coincident with the rapid strides made in surgery generally, and with the many discoveries which seem not unlikely to lead eventually to real therapeutic advances in internal medicine. Ophthalmology has practically been at a standstill. This being so, and as there are already not a few text-books on diseases of the eye, an addition to their number can hardly claim to be called for because of the latest developments of the subject being either very extensive or very important. A large experience as a teacher has, however, shown me that an adequate appreciation of the nature and treatment of even the commoner forms of eye disease is far from being general. I venture to hope, therefore, that there may)e room for a treatise which is both short and essentially practical, and which, while representing without unnecessary detail current opinions as to pathology, gives expression to the authors individual experience as regards diagnosis and treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Diseases of the Eye: For Students and General Practitioners IN the following pages the author has endeavored to present a concise, practical, and systematic Manual of the Diseases of the Eye, intended for the student and the general practitioner of medicine. The great difficulty in preparing a book of this sort is to say enough but not too much. With this idea in view, the author has made the volume sufficiently comprehensive, up to date, and yet of such limited size that it can, if desired, be carried in the pocket. This restriction in size has been accomplished by omitting excessive detail, extensive discussion, and lengthy accounts of theories and rare conditions. The author has endeav ored to give the fundamental facts of ophthalmology and to cover all that is essential in this branch of medicine, always keeping in mind that the book has been written for students and general practitioners. Space therefore has been allotted as the necessities of such readers require, estimated by an extended experience in teaching. Thus, rare conditions have merely been mentioned; uncommon affections, of interest chiefly to the specialist, have been dismissed with a few lines; and common diseases, which the general practitioner is most frequently called upon to treat, have been described with comparative fulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ophthalmic Practice The eyeball, which is globular in form and about seven-eighths of an inch in diameter, has on its anterior aspect, and occupying about one-sixth of its circumference, the segment of a smaller sphere which projects about a line beyond the larger circle. The anterior segment is formed by the Cornea, the remainder by the Sclerotic. These are the firm, outer tunics of the eye. Next within the sole rotic lies the Choroid, and within this the Retina enclosing the Vitreous Humor. Within the cornea is the Aqueous Humor, limited posteriorly by the Crystalline Lens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ophthalmoscopic Surgery: Being a Practical Treatise on the Use of the Ophthalmoscope in Diseases of the Eye The confident opinion I entertained, when the first edition of this work appeared, in 1857, of the value and importance of the Ophthalmoscope as an unerring guide in the previously obscure pathology of the eye, and the great popularity which I also anticipated it would achieve, have been fully realized by the results of the past five years' experience. That its introduction would form a new era in scientific investigation, I felt assured, from the advance of special knowledge when aided by proper methods. Of investigation, and the wide field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ophthalmology This manual concerns itself only with some of the commoner diseases and injuries of the eye, and the simpler methods of testing the functions of the organ of sight, including a very brief account of the methods of detecting refractive errors. It makes no pretense to furnish a complete treatise. Therefore physiologic optics and de tailed descriptions of the anomalies of refraction and muscle balance and their treatment, Ophthalmoscopy, unusual and comparatively uncommon diseases of the eye, and most of the procedures of ophthalmic surgery are omitted. In the paragraphs on treatment a few operative methods are included because they may be regarded in a certain sense as emergency operations. In the appendix are recorded the Visual requirements for recruits and. Drafted men and for applicants in Aviation Service, the tests for ocular malingering, and formulas for the usual collyria, antiseptics, and astringents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relations of Diseases of the Eye to General Diseases: Forming a Supplementary Volume to Every Manual and Text-Book of Practical Medicine and Ophthalmology The point of view is from the side of the general practitioner, who having in hand a particular case, say for example of tabes' dor salis, is put into possession of the various eye_ lesions liable to occur; Whether these be present or absent he is prepared to understand the ocular phenomena. In fact, the book serves the valuable purpose of a cross index between the general field of medicine and an impor tant specialty. On the other hand, the oculist finds his range of view enlarged and is made to realize in a more adequate degree, that local disease may depend upon and be the signal of a lesion of some re mote organ or of a constitutional affection. He is made to appreciate the need of wide observation of symptoms, and-is kept in touch with the pathology and therapeutics of medicine at large. The editor has added little to the author's pages and has not taken upon himself the work of translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Ophthalmology No apology can be necessary for the issuance of a work of this kind, when it is known that there is not a treatise that is particularly designed for the student in his class work in college, most works being intended for the skilled oculist. The arrangement of the subjects has been made in keeping with the needs of the student: first the anatomy and physiology of the eye, then the diseases and their treatment in such natural order, that the subject treated is designed to prepare him as well as possible at each recitation for that which follows. While this treatise is especially intended for the student in his class work at college, it is no less adaptable for him as a general practitioner, for what is necessary for the student to know and understand thoroughly, in reference to a knowledge of the anat emy, diagnosis and treatment of an affection of the eye, in the most concise and practical form, is equally suited to the general practitioner.
