Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Pi Kappa Alpha On the night of March 1st, 1868, the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded at the University of Virginia, and for forty years this College order has lead indeed a varied career. First it loomed up brightly on the horizon of the Grecian world, and promised fair to become a worthy rival of its older and more strongly entrenched fellows. Then the hand of Fate was laid upon her, and at the end of twenty years, with only two chapters to sustain her good name, her era was about closed, her sun seemed to be almost set. It was at this time that a mere handful of her noble sons came to the rescue, and by almost superhuman efforts, succeeded in raising the drooping standard, and planted it more firmly than ever before. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alpha Kappa Psi Handbook: A Manual for Nu Chapter It is true that at various times many articles dealing with specific phases of secret society organization and the Fraternity in general have appeared in the publication, The Diary of Alpha Kappa Psi. Yet these newer chapters, and the still newer men, know nothing of the immediate past relating to their brotherhood. Even the Boston University chapter does not possess a complete file of the General Fraternity Magazine; and even if it did it would be practically impossible for each member to read the particular matter which he should know. The will of the chapter has been to publish a manual for the use of Nu Chapter. Undoubtedly it will be of benefit to the other chapters also. The pamphlet is to be issued to the members of the chapter in Boston University, to the Officers of the General Fraternity and other chapters, to college and university libraries, and the larger state and public libraries. The material in these pages is not of a secret nature. It aims only to give you, whether or not you are a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, an encyclopedic idea of business education, and a short historical sketch of the Oldest and largest commercial fraternity in the United States - alpha kappa psi. The material contained in this brief work is not entirely original. Some material regarding fraternities in general has been taken from the Manual of American College Fraterni ties, by the late William Raimond Baird - permission being given by James T. Brown, Beta Theta Pi. A large amount of data and articles have been taken from back numbers of The Diary of Alpha Kappa Psi. Special mention should be made of the fact that articles by Dean Joseph French Johnson of New York University, Dr. D. Shaw Duncan, 'denver Uni versity; Dr. Walter E. Lagerquist, Northwestern Universityand A. K. Hallett, New York University, 1917, have been reproduced in part in this handbook. These have been blended together in a logical arrangement to form a handbook of information for commercial fraternity students. It has not been found advisable to give credit for each statement, so the authorities in general are stated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honor My Father is a true story of how college men came to the US Navy as reservists, instructed by the officers from Annapolis, and teamed together. It brings their many personal stories of interactions with my dad (Air Defense Commander), serving on two destroyers (USS Bancroft & USS Goodrich) with the naming of their actual crew members. My story honors these silent, humble heroes. Thirty Benson-class destroyers were built from 1938 to 1943 and were the most vulnerable in the sea, protecting the fleet. The officers and crews earned 174 Battle Star Citations, one Presidential Citation and two Navy Unit Commendations posthumously. The last section of my true story about Dad, Comedy of Adolescence; describes how as a new professor, working on his Ph.D. this writer entered his teenage years while the two of us moved from the city of Chicago to the small town of Athens, Ohio. After his war experiences, he experienced nothing like the big guns going off in his ear until the hard pounding drums from my new rock and roll band!

Book excerpt: The rich history and social significance of the “Divine Nine” African American Greek-letter organizations is explored in this comprehensive anthology. In the long tradition of African American benevolent and secret societies, intercollegiate African American fraternities and sororities have strong traditions of fostering brotherhood and sisterhood among their members, exerting considerable influence in the African American community and being in the forefront of civic action, community service, and philanthropy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Toni Morrison, Arthur Ashe, and Sarah Vaughn are just a few of the trailblazing members of these organizations. African American Fraternities and Sororities places the history of these organizations in context, linking them to other movements and organizations that predated them and tying their history to the Civil Rights movement. It explores various cultural aspects of the organizations, such as auxiliary groups, branding, calls, and stepping, and highlights the unique role of African American sororities.
