Book excerpt: In The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure, Victor Turner examines rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his now-famous concept of "Communitas." He characterizes it as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since these lectures were first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. He extends Van Gennep's notion of the "liminal phase" of rites of passage to a more general level, and applies it to gain understanding of a wide range of social phenomena. Once thought to be the "vestigial" organs of social conservatism, rituals are now seen as arenas in which social change may emerge and be absorbed into social practice. As Roger Abrahams writes in his foreword to the revised edition: "Turner argued from specific field data. His special eloquence resided in his ability to lay open a sub-Saharan African system of belief and practice in terms that took the reader beyond the exotic features of the group among whom he carried out his fieldwork, translating his experience into the terms of contemporary Western perceptions. Reflecting Turner's range of intellectual interests, the book emerged as exceptional and eccentric in many ways: yet it achieved its place within the intellectual world because it so successfully synthesized continental theory with the practices of ethnographic reports."

This book was released on 1975 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now apparent that East Africa cannot be viewed in isolation if its early history is to be adequately understood. Arabic, Indian, and Chinese influences have been discovered in the East African cultures, and evidence has shown that from about 100 B.C. the coastal fringe of eastern Africa was economically and culturally an integral part of the Indian Ocean basin. The available evidence relating to these early con-tacts is so scattered, however, that historians and archaeologists must rely on the findings of numerous related disciplines. The contributors to this volume make ingenious use of anthropological, geographical, ethnographical, zoological, linguistic, numismatic, and musicol-ogical evidence as they develop new historio-graphical techniques to open this challenging area of inquiry. Among them are the leading specialists in their respective fields: H Neville Chittick, Vinigi Grottanelli, Paul Wheatley, J S Trimingbam, Gervase Mathew, Pierre Wrin, Aldan Southall, Merrick Posnansky, James Kirkman, and Michael Gwynne. The topics in-vestigated include: the peopling of the East African coast, Chinese knowledge of East Africa, the Arab geographers, the problem of Malagasy origins, connections between the lacustrine peoples and the coast, and the origin and spread of various domestic food plants. Although there remain as many questions as answers, this volume serves as a vital summa-tion of our current knowledge and points the way toward further fruitful research in African history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war for Lebanon -- a conflict of domestic and external forces seeking to shape and control the Lebanese entity -- began long before 1970 and unfortunately did not end in 1983. But these years, the focus of this book, form a particularly significant phase in the history of both Lebanon and its immediate environment. The events of this period unfolded through 4 distinct stages: the collapse of the Lebanese political system between 1970 and 1975; the civil war of 1975-76; the lingering crisis of the years 1976-82; and the war of 1982. This book primarily explores the interplay between Lebanon's domestic politics and developments in the larger Middle East.

Book excerpt: The Book Deals With The Political, Administrative, Socio-Economic And Religious History Of North Karnatak (Dharwad And Belgaum Districts Completely And Bijapur District South Of The Krishna River) Under The Nawabs Of Savanur Who Ruled Over This Area From 1672 To 1948 After The Adil Shahs Of Bijapur. From 1672 To 1794 They Ruled Largely As Independent Rulers, And Thereafter Their Kingdom Was Turned Into A Princely State, And The Extent Of Its Area Was Reduced Considerably. They Left Behind Them A Good Administrative System, Which They Had Largely Inherited From The Adil Shahs And Bahmanis. The Local Chieftains, The Desais, Shared The Ruling Power With The Nawabs. They Were The Backbone Of The Provincial Administrative System. The Agrarian System Inherited Many Elements From Vijayanagara, Adil Shahs And Marathas. The Standard Land Measure, The Mar, Was Continued From The Vijayanagara Times, While The Bigha And Chawar Were Borrowed From The Adil Shahs And The Marathas. In The Religious Field One Finds An Attempt At Harmonisation And Synthesis. The Religious Festivals Of Various Castes And Communities Were Allowed To Continue As They Were Handed Down From Earlier Times. Saints Of Different Religions Commanded Equal Respect And Devotion From All The Communities. Most Of The Nawabs Were Religious-Minded, And Never Indulged In Any Religious Discrimination. There Are Many Examples Of The Nawabs Making Grants Of Lands To The Brahmins, Lingayats And Other Communities, And Not A Single Temple Or Matha Was Demolished On Religious Grounds During Their Times. Savanur Was Privileged To Get A Printing Press Early In The Modern Period. Its Judicial System Became A Model For Other Princely States. The Book Is A Pioneering Work, It Being The First Historical Work Of Its Kind On The Subject. It Throws Open To The World Of Historians A Subject About The Different Aspects Of Which Independent Works Can Be Written. It Explores New Avenues On The Uncharted Sea Of The Subject Trailing Behind New Lines Of Development For The Coming Historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways that politics and financial markets impact one another. In this relationship, politics is the ultimate controlling force. The kinds and prices of financial instruments that get traded and the individuals and institutions that get to trade them, not to mention the rules under which everyone trades, are all matters decisively influenced by an array of political variables - sometimes for the better, but all too often for the worse. The fault for this political skewing of the markets chiefly lies with democracy. Through its commitment to equality and its inclination towards fiscal profligacy, democracy hinders the markets from acting as a greater force for social good. To fix this skewing of finance, democracy’s troubling tendencies must be squarely faced and curbed by a return to its monetary roots. Democracy must reinstall gold at the monetary foundations of our financial markets.

Some 1,000 engineering situations/problems have been ‘flagged-up’ to help demonstrate that engineering cannot be fully understood without a good knowledge of mathematics. The extensive and thorough coverage makes this a great text for introductory level engineering courses – such as for aeronautical, construction, electrical, electronic, mechanical, manufacturing engineering and vehicle technology – including for BTEC First, National and Diploma syllabuses, City & Guilds Technician Certificate and Diploma syllabuses, and even for GCSE revision. Its companion website provides extra materials for students and lecturers, including full solutions for all 1,700 further questions, lists of essential formulae, multiple choice tests, and illustrations, as well as full solutions to revision tests for course instructors.

Book excerpt: Ilhéus in 1925 is a booming town with a record cacao crop and aspirations for progress, but the traditional ways prevail. When Colonel Mendonça discovers his wife in bed with a lover, he shoots and kills them both. Political contests, too, can be settled by gunshot... No one imagines that a bedraggled migrant worker who turns up in town–least of all Gabriela herself–will be the agent of change. Nacib Saad has just lost the cook at his popular café and in desperation hires Gabriela. To his surprise she turns out to be a great beauty as well as a wonderful cook and an enchanting boon to his business. But what would people say if Nacib were to marry her? Lusty, satirical and full of intrigue, Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon is a vastly entertaining panorama of small town Brazilian life.
