Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Destiny of Man, Viewed in the Light of His Origin', John Fiske presents a thought-provoking collection of essays on the origins and destiny of humanity. Beginning with the known and delving into the unknown, Fiske explores the implications of the doctrine of evolution on the progress of human society and the elimination of warfare. While he admits the subject of a future life may lie outside the range of legitimate scientific discussion, he argues that our opinions on such transcendental questions are influenced by our opinions on questions within the scope of scientific inquiry. With compelling insights and arguments, Fiske ultimately offers a message of hope and the potential for improbability in the destiny of humankind.

Book excerpt: Goes back to the initial teachings that were used in the creation of the Christian religion and demonstrates that they were actually derived from the Gnosis, or Ancient Wisdom. Gnosis is a Greek word meaning knowledge, or to know. In the early Church those who were mystics, or Gnostics, were rejected and considered heretics. What makes this book so important is that it identifies certain mystical teachings from early times as rightfully belonging in the Church. According to Kingsland, this is the real Christian message as originally understood by the Gospel writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neo-Buddhist Writings of Lafcadio Hearn: Light from the East by Antony Goedhals offers radical rereadings of a misunderstood and undervalued Victorian writer. It reveals that at the metaphysical core of Lafcadio Hearn’s writings is a Buddhist vision as yet unappreciated by his critics and biographers. Beginning with the American writings and ending with the essay- and story-meditations of the Japanese period, the book demonstrates Hearn’s deeply personal and transcendently beautiful evocations of a Buddhist universe, and shows how these deconstruct and dissolve the categories of Western discourse and thinking about reality – to create a new language, a poetry of vastness, emptiness, and oneness that had not been heard before in English, or, indeed, in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late in the nineteenth century, many Americans were troubled by the theories of Charles Darwin, which contradicted both traditional Christian teachings and the idea of human supremacy over nature, and by an influx of foreign immigrants, who challenged the supremacy of the old Anglo-Saxon elite. In response, many people drew comfort from the theories of philosopher Herbert Spencer, who held that human society inevitably develops towards higher and more spiritual forms. In this illuminating study, Kathleen Pyne explores how Spencer’s theories influenced a generation of American artists. She shows how the painters of the 1880s and 1890s, particularly John La Farge, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Dewing and the Boston school, and the impressionist painters of the Ten, developed an art dedicated to social refinement and spiritual ideals and to defending the Anglo-Saxon elite of which they were members. This linking of visual culture to the problematic conditions of American life radically reinterprets the most important trends in late nineteenth-century American painting.
