Book excerpt: Sometimes the wilderness is the only place God can get your undivided attention. Everyone finds himself or herself in a wilderness at some point: financial wildernesses, emotional wildernesses, relational wildernesses, health wildernesses, reputation wildernesses, failure wildernesses, unemployment wildernesses—the list goes on and on. In those moments, we are utterly dependent on God for well-timed help. If he doesn’t come through, we’re finished. For forty years, two million Israelites were in the wilderness, and God fed them supernaturally every morning with manna, teaching people who doubted him he can be trusted with everything they needed to survive. This is a lesson we need to learn too. In personal stories and applications of biblical lessons, Manna reveals how God specializes in making a way where there is no way. He proved it every day to the nation of Israel, never missing a day of being faithful. He was never late, and he was never early. He was always just in time. And he will be for you.

Book excerpt: There are no bad guys or good guys. There are only better guys and worse guys. One of the worse guys is Val Toreth. In a world in which torture is a legitimate part of the investigative process, he works for the Investigation and Interrogation Division, where his colleagues can be more dangerous than the criminals he investigates. One of the better guys is Keir Warrick. His small corporation, SimTech, is developing a "sim" system that places users in a fully immersive virtual reality. A minnow in a murky and dangerous pond, he is only beginning to discover how many compromises may be required for success. Their home is the dark future dystopia of New London. A totalitarian bureaucracy controls the European Administration, sharing political power with the corporations. The government uses violence and the many divisions of the feared Department of Internal Security to maintain control and crush resistance. The corporations fight among themselves, using lethal force under the euphemism of "corporate sabotage," uniting only to resist attempts by the Administration to extend its influence over them. Toreth and Warrick are more natural enemies than allies. But mutual attraction and the fight for survival can create unlikely bonds.

Book Synopsis Famous But Unauthentic Stories from The Seerah of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by : Mohammed Thajammul Hussain Manna
Download or read book Famous But Unauthentic Stories from The Seerah of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ written by Mohammed Thajammul Hussain Manna and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Praises and Thanks be to Allah and peace and salutations be upon the last and final Messenger Muhammad ﷺ.This small but beneficial work began as an assignment, attempted at training the third year students of The Taleem-ush-Shariah Department1 (Women), in translating and summarizing Arabic books.Initially, the third year students, of the batch 2018-19, were given a fifty four point short summary of the book in Arabic2, which they Alhamdulillah successfully completed in translating into the English language.I later referred to the original book and found it very beneficial for students of The Prophetic Seerah, thus I decided to summarize and translate all the unauthentic stories mentioned in the book and compile them so as to benefit a larger audience. The narrations mentioned in the Arabic text of the original book as authored by Shaikh Dr.Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Ushan were studied and summarized, and the accuracy of the summaries were cross checked in other English renderings of the famous books of Seerah3 and were finalised. Whilst mentioning who declared a narration weak or checked the authenticity, we tried not to bring the entire discussion presented in the original book. We only named the scholar(s), who criticised the narration and referenced the summarized ruling to their respective books of research. Sometimes I named the weak narrators when the discussion in the book was brief and at times I mentioned the alternative authentic story and their references as pointed out by Shaikh Dr.Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Ushan4 .5 At times I referenced some authentic narrations from myself when I thought it to be beneficial.I and the author as he mentioned in his introduction, do not claim that only these are the most unauthentic stories being spread. The reality of the matter is that there are numerous other unreliable narrations as the scholars have mentioned6.In the 'Appendix', we have added a handful of other stories which are false or very weak but are frequently heard in Islamic speeches and lectures, as we found it fit to use this booklet to alert and warn the readers of the weak and false narrations spread in the Ummah. We hope that this endeavour by us will be fruitful in enlightening the masses on being careful in studying the Prophet's biography ﷺ.May Allah accept this from us.-Abu Muaaz Mohammed MannaIslamic Studies teacher at The Islamic Education Center for Women (IEC)(R), Mangalore, India.

Book Synopsis The Doomsday Book by : Marshall Brain
Download or read book The Doomsday Book written by Marshall Brain and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might the world as we know it end? In this illustrated guide, How Stuff Works author Marshall Brain explores myriad doomsday scenarios and the science behind them. What if the unimaginable happens? A nuclear bomb detonates over a major city, for example, or a deadly virus infects millions around the world. There are other disasters we don’t even have to imagine because they’ve already occurred, like violent hurricanes or cataclysmic tsunamis that have caused horrific loss of life and damage. In The Doomsday Book, Marshall Brain explains how everything finally ends—the decimation of nations and cities, of civilization, of humanity, of all life on Earth. Brain takes a deep dive into a wide range of doomsday narratives, including manmade events such as an electromagnetic pulse attack, a deadly pandemic, and nuclear warfare; devastating natural phenomena, such as an eruption from a super-volcano, the collapse of the Gulf Stream, or lethal solar flares; and science-fiction scenarios where robots take over or aliens invade. Each compelling chapter provides a detailed description of the situation, the science behind it, and ways to prevent or prepare for its occurrence. With fun graphics and eye-catching photographs at every turn, The Doomsday Book will be the last book you’ll ever have to read about the last days on Earth. Scenarios include: - Asteroid Strike: a massive asteroid could obliterate life—just as it might have killed the dinosaurs. - Gray Goo: self-replicating nanobots engulf the planet. - Grid Attack: an attack on our power grid shuts down the internet, affecting airports, banks, computers, food delivery, medical devices, and the entire economic system. - Gulf Stream collapse: the shutdown of this important ocean current causes temperatures to plummet. - Ocean acidification: if the oceans’ pH levels shift due to a rise in carbon dioxide, all marine life could die.
Book Synopsis Itzhak Perlman's Broken String by : Jacqueline Jules
Download or read book Itzhak Perlman's Broken String written by Jacqueline Jules and published by Evening Street Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2016 winner of the Helen Kay Chapbook Prize In the apocryphal story told about Yitzhak Perlman during his concert at Lincoln Center in 1995 when one of the four violin strings suddenly tore, and he proceeded to reconceive and play the entire work with three remaining strings, he said that “sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can make with what you have left.” If ever there were a work that explores the aftermath of loss, it is this powerful and highly original collection by Jacqueline Jules. “Every life is lived on a high wire,/ strung over the treetops…//Don’t expect to feel safe.” The poet reminds us not to waste time grieving over “stolen credit cards” and a “broken car on the day of a big interview.” Reminds us how “Joy sits on a seesaw with Grief.” If it’s divinity we seek, best we gather the “stone tablets” and carry them through the wilderness of time. Consolation can be “sunlight/streaming through/serrated shapes…like fingers” that “wipe” away “tears.” —Myra Sklarew, Author of Lithuania: New & Selected Poems What plucks at the heart strings of Jacqueline Jules’ intense poems of Itzhak Perlman’s Broken String is a dialectic between faith and loss where science mediates. “Both Science and Faith insist/ nothing is random.” Grief is a squatter—an unwanted presence after friends and family leave the bereaved. The poet dares to challenge Jean-Paul Sartre on despair and suggests to the physical therapist “better to tease a tiger/ than poke a pain.” Everything connects: Emily Dickinson, vending machines, a gypsy girl with rocks in her pockets who steps into a river. This is a smart and smarting journey through the human condition. —Karren L. Alenier, author of The Anima of Paul Bowles This lovely and moving collection explores what happens when grief is chronic. After the shock of initial loss, when grief becomes a daily companion, we must learn, as Jacqueline Jules wisely writes, to find music in our crippled instruments. Like Jean-Paul Sartre, we “cross that cruel river”; like Isaac Newton, our personal math proves “we are vulnerable to falling objects.” —Kim Roberts, founding editor of Beltway Poetry Quarterly
Book Synopsis Transforming Grace by : Jerry Bridges
Download or read book Transforming Grace written by Jerry Bridges and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Confidently in God's Unfailing Love Grace is amazing because it is God's provision for when we fall short of His standards. Unfortunately, too many of us embrace grace for our salvation but then leave it behind in our everyday lives. We base our relationship with God on our performance rather than on His love for us, even when we intuitively know that our performance cannot earn us the love we so desperately crave. Isn't it time to stop trying to measure up and begin accepting the transforming power of God's grace? The product of more than ten years of Bible study, Navigator author Jerry Bridges's Transforming Grace is a fountainhead of inspiration and renewal that will show you just how inexhaustible and generous God's grace really is. This edition includes the full study guide, which was formerly available as a separate product (ISBN 9781600063046).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 365+ Day Biblical Devotional After 15 years of attending a Men's Bible study with my friends Wheeler and Paul, I decided to do an independent study of my own. I spend an hour each morning investigating real, tough, modern day biblical questions. After I get done, I try to distill the answers into a "Bible Minute" with a short introduction of the topic, a Bible verse or two or three and a short conclusion. I began posting these Bible Minutes on my Facebook page and before long I began to see true miracles. I heard stories of conversions, breakthroughs and restoration of relationships as a result of my studies. Make no mistake; I'm an average guy who just likes reading the Bible. I attended Bible College but after less than a year, I decided that my true calling was being a chiropractor so I'm no biblical scholar. I hope that my compiling the many studies I have done over the last few years and creating this book helps heal your soul, brings you closer to God, and allows you to grow a deeper relationship with Jesus. It is my prayer that this book provides the manna for your spirit, sets your soul free and becomes a true blessing in your life and in the lives of the people you gift this book to. In Health and Faith, Jay
