Book excerpt: EARLY MEITE1 HISTORY : Religion, Society and the Manipur Puyas is a concerted attempt towards presenting an objective reconstruction of the religion and society in early Meitei history. Studies undertaken so far have been inadequate in terms of handling the mass of manuscripts called Puyas which are the only major written source for the study. Notwithstanding the existence of reliable historical material alongside mythical narrative, the problem has been the treatment of the Puyas by majority of the scholars as authentic historical records per $e. This book offers a fresh approach to the treatment of the subject. It integrates critical study of the Puyas, experiences of the living tradition archaeological evidence and secondary data sources to comprehend the subject from a wider perspective. The study focuses on ancestor worship; a critical study of which is crucial for understanding other aspects of Manipur history. The traditional religion passed through a long process of evolution and survived even after Vaisnavism was declared the state religion of Manipur in the 18Thcentury A.D. The book will serve its purpose if it contributes towards a meaningful interpretation of the history of the Meiteis. The work is also aimed at stimulating discourses on issues such as .identity, ethnicity and nationality affecting contemporary Manipur society. It is hoped that the study will provide a more perceptive understanding of the past, which is essential in order to understand the present and subsequent periods of Meitei history.

Book excerpt: This book describes the identity of Lai people settled in Manipur as Tai ethnic. The story is based on evidence such as written scriptures, records, and present practice of cultural elements. There must be more Lai people in Manipur but the present study focuses on two villages as a case study due to lack of research resources. It is hoped that scholars could find those Lai communities that settled once upon a time in Manipur but presently perceived as a vanished group of people.

Book Synopsis Dance Matters by : Pallabi Chakravorty
Download or read book Dance Matters written by Pallabi Chakravorty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a multidisciplinary perspective on dance scholarship and practice as they have evolved in India and its diaspora, outlining how dance histories have been written and re-written, how aesthetic and pedagogical conventions have changed and are changing, and how politico-economic shifts have shaped Indian dance and its negotiation with modernity.. Written by eminent and emergent scholars and practitioners of Indian dance, the articles make dance a foundational socio-cultural and aesthetic phenomena that reflects and impacts upon various cultural intercourses -- from art and architecture to popular culture, and social justice issues. They also highlight the interplay of various frameworks: global, national, and local/indigenous for studying these diverse performance contexts, using dance as a critical lens to analyse current debates on nationalism, transnationalism, gender and sexuality, and postcolonial politics. At the performace level, some articles question the accepted divisions of Indian dance (‘classical’, ‘folk’, and ‘popular’) and critique the dominant values associated with classical dance forms. Finally, the book brings together both experiential and objective dimensions of bodily knowledge through dance.
