Book excerpt: The main purpose of writing this book is providing the maximum information to the mango growers about management strategies to overcome the mango malformation and improve the fruit quality. Because, mango (Mangifera indica L.) is known as "king of fruits" due to its delicious taste and excellent flavour. Unfortunately, it is subjected to a large number of disorders right from the plants in the nursery to the fruit in transit and storage, which ultimately results a low yield with poor fruit quality. Of these, mango malformation is most damaging and so far untraceable and uncontrollable. To achieve the goal of high production, the improvement of mango production practices is needed which should eliminate or minimize the potential obstacles in successful mango culture i.e. malformation. Various control measures have been suggested but none of these have been proved satisfactory because of the complex nature of this malady. Therefore the present work was initiated to ascertain the effectiveness of copper and non copper based fungicides as foliar sprays in minimizing the intensity of malformation of mango.

Book excerpt: Blossom malformation of mangoes has been described in many countries. In South Africa there is confusion on the subject and some farmers claim that have never seen signs of the disease, though their tress are infected. The cause of blossom malformation is uncertain. According to literature two organisms are often quoted viz, Aceria mangiferae, a budmite, and Fusarium sugglutinans, a common fungus. There is also a third possibility of F. subglutinans, possibly transmitted by a mite and the two operaing together. Whatever the cause, blossom malformation is considered a serious disease, and some of the symptoms which are often seen in the Tzaneen and Nelspruit areas are given here to assist gorwers in recognizing this disorder. Infected tress do not yield any fruit. The disease is effectively distributed by infected nursery tress. No chemical control has yet been discovered.

Therefore, to obtain high production, good nutrition is very important with good practices, which are certainly needed to improve orchard conditions. This study was carried out with different combinations of nutrients to understand the growth physiology, increase the yield response and reduce the occurrence of malformation of mango. As, it has been revealed that healthy trees are more resistant against all kind of natural problems. It was found that balanced nutrients (N, P, K) improve vegetative and reproductive growth, increased the yield and reduced the incidence of malformation .
