Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manganese Deposits of the West Foot of the Blue Ridge, Virginia Manganese deposits occur sporadically along the whole west foot of the Blue Ridge in Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama. The deposits along the part of the Blue Ridge in Virginia described in this report have yielded most of the output of this State, whose total production, from 1867 to 1917, inclusive, tons, exceeds that of any other State. The annual domestic production for a number of years, however, has been small in comparison with the quantity of ore that has been imported. In the past two years, when ships were so greatly needed for service between the United States and our associates in war in Europe, it was necessary that the domestic production be increased as much as possible. Since the world war began the United States Geological Survey and the State Surveys, includ ing the Virginia Geological Survey, have been making a special effort to stimulate interest in manganese mining in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Deposits of the James River-Roanoke River Manganese District, Virginia Barite was mined between 1874 and 1935; about a dozen deposits are known. The Hewitt mine near Evington, which was closed down in 1935, was the largest producer in the state. Recorded production Of Campbell County for the period 1911 - 1935, inclusive, amounted to short tons of barite, much Of which apparently came from the Hewitt mine. The potential reserves Of barite in the district are difficult to appraise. Reserves in known deposits appear to be small, but it is possible that deposits comparable in size to the Hewitt deposit await discovery. Copper ore is reported to have been mined in the Glades, Amherst County, and along Wreck Island Creek, Appomattox County, before the Revolutionary War. Work was done later in the Glades area and also at the Old Bishop mine in Campbell County. Recorded production of copper ore from the district amounts to 15 tons, which was shipped from the Glades in 1880. Reserves of copper ore are judged to be insignificant. Stone has been quarried at numerous places over a period of many years. White and blue marbles have been used mostly for making agricultural lime, as flux in the Old iron furnaces, and in masonry construction, quartzite, green stone, and Lynchburg gneiss have been quarried mainly for railroad and high way ballast, and for construction purposes. White marble and quartzite have been quarried in recent years in two quarries operated by the State, and could be quarried from other sites on a more extensive scale. A Virginian named Ruckman dis covered manganese at Cass station, Bartow county, and recognized a similarity between these ores and those of Virginia. In 1867 the prop erty was bought for mining purposes by Mr. M. G. Dobbins, who has furnished the following information In 1870 the mines were rented to a company of New York capitalists who extracted about tons of ore from less' than one-half acre of land, without going deeper than 40 feet. The property has now gone into the hands of the Bartow Man ganese and Manufacturing Company, with paid stock. The company consists of M. G. Dobbins and others. Nearly the whole year. Has been spent in placing machinery in position and in other prepara tions for work. The indications are that the ore will find sale in Pitts burgh. A small quantity has been shipped to England. The following analyses give a fair idea of the average character of the ore. No. 1 is a sample analyzed in New York; No.2 is taken from a lot of ore shipped to England.
