Book excerpt: Estima-se que a diversidade genetica de mandioca e ampla, com sua maior concentracao na America Latina e caribe, enquanto que nos continentes Africano e Asiatico, essa diversidade e estreita, considerando que o germoplasma la disponivel e de origem Latino-Americano, e de suas recombinacoes locais. Com isso, o continente Latino Americano, onde a mandioca se originou, detem a maior diversidade genetica do genero Manihot spp., o qual ainda nao foi totalmente coletado. De acordo com HERSHEY (1985), o que existe coletado e disponivel nas colecoes, apresentam suficiente grau de variabilidade para fornecer ao melhorista a maioria dos caracteres de interesse agronomico. Dentro da especie Manihot esculenta, ja foi identificada diversidade genetica para quse todos os caracteres estudados, incluindo aqueles de natureza morfologica, agronomica de resistencia as principais pragas e doencas e de qualidade. Variacoes para caracteres fisiologicos tem sido menos estudados, mas ja existem indicacoes de alta variabilidade a sensibilidade a temperatura, foto-periodo e sensibilidade estomatal a umidade relativa do ar (KAWANO, 1983; LOZANO el al 1993; HERSHEY, 1985). Essa variacao genetica da cultura e resultado da selecao natural durante a evolucao da especie, pre e pos domesticacao. Nos diversos ambientes, a selecao resultou numa ampla diversidade genetica de clones com adaptacao especifica a condicoes locais.
