Furthermore, it describes treatment considerations for geriatric populations, covering all relevant aspects from physiology to treatment planning and patient management in the surgical and prosthetic phases. The phenomenon of aging is a global concern for policy makers, providers, and the public. Dentists worry especially about the burden their aging patients face to maintain their oral health-related quality of life and well-being. Furthermore, older patients require health care technologies that will enable them to maintain their oral health. Over the past few decades, mandibular implant-assisted complete prostheses have attracted the attention of both patients and clinicians, as research on the biological, functional, esthetic, and psychosocial benefits has increased. This book will be of value for all with an interest in the subject..

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prosthetic complications of patients with a maxillary complete denture (CD) opposing a mandibular Implant- Supported Fixed/Removable Prosthesis (ISFRP). This study is a retrospective analysis of an ongoing prospective study. Dental records from 46 patients treated with a maxillary CD and a mandibular ISFRP were reviewed for fifteen different prosthetic complications. The mean recall time was 7.9 years. The percentage of patients exhibiting each complication and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The recall period was divided into three parts: (A) 0-2 years (B) >25 years (C) 5 years. Logistic regression analysis determined the effect of recall period, age and gender on each of the following major complications: tooth fracture, complete denture relines, screw complications, and tooth replacement. Statistical significance was exhibited for: complete denture relines, posterior tooth replacement, and screw complications. The most common complications include prosthetic tooth fracture, tooth wear, maxillary hard relines, and screw complications. There were no incidents of framework fracture or abutment fracture. Patients were: .06 times more likely to require a heat processed hard reline with each year increase of age. Patients were 3.7 times after two to five years of service and 8.5 times after five years of service, more likely to require a hard reline than in the first two years of service. Patients were 52.5 times more likely to need posterior tooth replacement after five years of service than in the first two years, and 39.9 times more likely to encounter a screw complication after five years of service than in the first two years of service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clinical success and longevity of endosteal dental implants as load-bearing abutments are controlled largely by the mechanical setting in which they function. The treatment plan is responsible for the design, number and position of the implants. After achievement of rigid fixation, proper crestal bone contour, gingival health, mechanical stress, and/or strain beyond the physical limits of hard tissues have been suggested as the primary cause of initial bone loss around implants. After successful surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation with a passive prosthesis, such noxious stresses and loads applied to the implant and surrounding tissues result primarily from occlusal contacts. Complications (prosthetic and/or bony support) reported in follow-up studies underline occlusion as a determining factor for success or failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implant dentistry has become a standard option for the rehabilitation of fully and partially edentulous patients. With the ever-increasing number of dentists involved in implant dentistry, it is essential to ensure that their treatment methods follow the highest standard. The ITI Treatment Guide series, a compendium of evidence-based implant-therapy techniques in daily practice, is written by renowned clinicians and provides a comprehensive overview of various therapeutic options. Using an illustrated step-by-step approach, the ITI Treatment Guide shows practitioners how to manage different clinical situations, with the emphasis on sound diagnostics, evidence-based treatment concepts, and predictable treatment outcomes. The second volume of the ITI Treatment Guide is devoted to the restoration of partially dentate patients. Central to this volume of the ITI Treatment Guide are loading protocols available to the clinician and the patient and how they relate to various treatment indications, including both single and multiple missing teeth in the posterior and anterior regions of the mouth. Among potential topics for upcoming volumes are implant placement in extraction sockets, loading protocols in edentulous patients, implant therapy in the esthetic zone in extended edentulous spaces, and many more.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide to short implants will take the reader through their research and development, explain the clinical indications, evaluate the outcomes achieved with various implants, and explore restorative and laboratory considerations. Short implants have steadily gained greater market share in the last decade as practitioners sought alternatives to traditional length implants in order to avoid grafting procedures. Current manufacturers offer a variety of implant lengths and widths, allowing surgeons and restorative dentists the ability to select the best implant for each clinical circumstance. Cutting edge information is provided on the research and clinical results achieved utilizing a range of implants, specifically those developed by Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Jack Hahn, and Bicon. Readers will also find an extensive description of the role of ultra-short implants involving reconstruction in both cleft patients and cancer patients who have lost portions of their mandible and/or maxilla. This book is a must-have for those interested in learning how the use of short and ultra-short implants offers both surgeons and restorative dentists an opportunity to stand out from those that use only the traditional length implants.
