Download or read book Holy Hell written by Gail Tredwell and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amma, universally known as "The Hugging Saint," went through a two-decade transformation from a simple fisherman's daughter to an international wonder worshiped by millions. Gail "Gayatri" Tredwell was there every step of the way--from early devotee to head female disciple, ever-present personal attendant, handmaiden, whipping post, and unwilling keeper of some devastating secrets. Because she became fluent in the Malayalam language and had continual intimate proximity to Amma for twenty years, Tredwell is uniquely capable of portraying this famous woman. She tells her tale with straightforward honesty, fairness, and a dash of Aussie snap and wit. Although the guru's flaws are a necessary part of her story and awakening, she strives to be factual throughout, digging deep to eschew victim frameworks and take responsibility for her own role in accepting the abuse and perpetuating the lies. Tredwell takes us vividly through her varying stages, starting with naïveté and innocent devotion, then on to dawning awareness and confusion, finally to emotional breakdown and her shocking "enlightenment"--her realization that the liberation she urgently required was is in fact liberation from her own guru

Book Synopsis The Modern Anthropology of India by : Peter Berger
Download or read book The Modern Anthropology of India written by Peter Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modern Anthropology of India is an accessible textbook providing a critical overview of the ethnographic work done in India since 1947. It assesses the history of research in each region and serves as a practical and comprehensive guide to the main themes dealt with by ethnographers. It highlights key analytical concepts and paradigms that came to be of relevance in particular regions in the recent history of research in India, and which possibly gained a pan-Indian or even trans-Indian significance. Structured according to the states of the Indian union, contributors raise several key questions, including: What themes were ethnographers interested in? What are the significant ethnographic contributions? How are peoples, communities and cultural areas represented? How has the ethnographic research in the area developed? Filling a significant gap in the literature, the book is an invaluable resource to students and researchers in the field of Indian anthropology/ethnography, regional anthropology and postcolonial studies. It is also of interest to students of South Asian studies in general as it provides an extensive and critical overview of regionally based ethnographic activity undertaken in India.

Book Synopsis Manchester Then and Now by : Jonathan Schofield
Download or read book Manchester Then and Now written by Jonathan Schofield and published by Anova Books. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the bestselling 'Then and Now' series, Manchester Then and Now visually charts the huge changes that have affected the city from the 1860s. The building of the ship canal in the late Victorian era turned Manchester into the UK's third biggest port. The industrial boom of the 1930s and post-war bust followed by the regeneration with the Commonwealth Games are all featured in a book that includes some spectacular aerial comparisons. A wonderful visual guide to Manchester, past and present. Some 70 historic photographs of Manchester's past are paired with specially commissioned contemporary views taken from the same vantage point. You can see the same streets and buildings as they were 'then' and as they are 'now'. The book features the changes to the city created by the massive IRA bomb of 1996, the demolition of some of the 1960s architecture and its redevelopment, the conversion of old mills to modern apartments and the renaissance of the Salford Quays as sought-after residential areas. Some of the recent strong setpiece buildings of Manchester are also included, such as the futuristic Imperial War Museum North and the 169-m tall Beetham Tower. And, of course, the evolution of the city's sports stadia is charted with images of Old Trafford Main Road, the Belle Vue stadium and Lancashire County Cricket's Old Trafford test area.
Book Synopsis Exploring Confrontation by : Michael Roberts
Download or read book Exploring Confrontation written by Michael Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka has been the meeting point of many ideologies and ways of being. This has spelt heterogeneity, syncretism and conflict. In drawing upon the practices of empirical research promoted by Western intellectual traditions, the author demonstrates the strengths of these practices through his contextualised engagement with the pogroms of 1915 and 1983, as well as other incidents, as at the same time he delineates some of the limits of empiricist rationality. This book is replete with rich ethnographic detail and serves as an exercise in historical anthropology which illuminates Sri Lanka's political culture. It not only opens out the contrast between Western and Indian world views, but also explores the human condition by bringing out the immediacy surrounding acts of victimisation and human beings in conflict.

Book Synopsis Factions, Friends and Feasts by : Jeremy Boissevain
Download or read book Factions, Friends and Feasts written by Jeremy Boissevain and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on field research in Malta, Sicily and among Italian emigrants in Canada, this book explores the social influence of the Mediterranean climate and the legacy of ethnic and religious conflict from the past five decades. Case studies illustrate the complexity of daily life not only in the region but also in more remote academe, by analysing the effects of fierce family loyalty, emigration and the social consequences of factionalism, patronage and the friends-of-friends networks that are widespread in the region. Several chapters discuss the social and environmental impact of mass tourism, how locals cope, and the paradoxical increase in religious pageantry and public celebrations. The discussions echo changes in the region and the related development of the author’s own interests and engagement with prevailing issues through his career.

Download or read book Yesterday's Buses written by Cliff Marsh and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-04-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AEC, Bristol, Crossley, Daimler, Dennis, Leyland and others were all manufacturers of passenger vehicle chassis which could be seen throughout the country in the years following the end of World War Two. They produced a wide range of double deck and single deck buses and coaches, bodied by a considerable number of body builders. With the exception of Dennis, all those chassis makers have now disappeared, along with nearly all the body builders. In addition, most operators of this variety of vehicles are no longer in existence, being primarily absorbed into larger operations. This book can only give a small indication of the major role Steve and his Quantock Heritage fleet have played in preserving not only part of the engineering history of this country, but its effect also on social history. In practical terms he has displayed this by enabling the general public to see, enjoy, and also use vehicles of a bygone era.
