Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a snapshot of 21st century archaeological resource management as a global enterprise, these 25 contributors show the range of activities, issues, and solutions undertaken by contemporary managers of heritage sites around the world. They show how the linkages between global archaeology and funding organizations, national policies, practices, and ideologies, and local populations and their cultural and economic interests foster complexity of the issues at all levels. Case materials from five continents introduce common themes of archaeologist relations with descendant groups, public outreach, national/local relationships, and data and site preservation. Sponsored by the World Archaeological Congress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is designed to broaden the scope with which many people regard a river. Rivers are commonly regarded from a very simplistic perspective as conduits for downstream flows of water. In this context, it may be considered acceptable and necessary to engineer the channel to either facilitate such flows (e.g., channelization, levees) or limit flows and store water (e.g., water supply reservoirs, flood control). The book presents the concept of a river as a spatially and temporally complex ecosystem that is likely to be disrupted in unexpected and damaging ways by direct river engineering and by human activities throughout a drainage basin. Viewing a river as a complex ecosystem with nonlinear responses to human activities will help to promote a more nuanced and effective approach to managing river ecosystems and to sustaining the water resources that derive from rivers. In this context, water resources refers to ecosystem services including water supply, water quality, flood control, erosion control, and riverine biota (e.g., freshwater fisheries). Chapters in this book draw extensively on existing literature but integrate this literature from a fresh perspective. General principles are expanded upon and illustrated with photographs, line drawings, tables, and brief, site-specific case studies from rivers around the world.

Book excerpt: This research also provides a systematic assessment of post-project performance of compound channels, an increasingly applied but little studied approach to multi-objective flood management based on floodplain reconnection. Finally, this research proposes a new framework to more effectively put ecosystem restoration on equal footing with flood protection in planning processes for floodplain management.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive technical manual is designed to give archaeologists the necessary background knowledge in environmental science required to excavate and analyze archaeological sites by rivers and on floodplains. Bringing together information on the evolution and exploitation of floodplain and river landscapes, this text draws on examples from Britain, Europe, North America and Australasia. An important theme is the interaction between climatic and cultural forces and the transformation of riverine environments.

Book excerpt: Resilience and Riverine Landscapes presents contributed chapters from global experts in Riverine Landscapes, making it the most comprehensive reference available on the topic. The book explores why rivers are ideal landscapes to study resilience and why studying rivers from a resilience perspective is important for our biophysical understanding of these landscapes and for society. The book focuses on the biophysical character of resilience in riverine landscapes, providing an interdisciplinary perspective of the structure, function, and interactions of riverine landscapes and the ecosystems they contain. The editors conclude by proposing a research agenda for the future, emphasizing the need for transdisciplinary research across a range of spatial and temporal scales and research domains. Presents the resilience of rivers with both a theoretical and applied focus Includes case studies from a wide geographical base, allowing for a full range of viewpoints Showcases how resilience is being incorporated into the study and management of riverine landscapes Includes a transdisciplinary focus on riverine landscapes, from theory to applied, and from biophysical to social-ecological systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and managers of regulated river systems will find this volume useful in acquiring information for deciding an integrated management plan for regulated river operations. Rather than the ecological theory of impacts of flow regulation, emphasis has been placed on methods to predict water quality and habitat alterations, as well as techniques to mitigate impacts from various operational scenarios. Although most chapters refer to impacts of riverine impoundments, these alternatives apply to any regulated situation in which changes in water quality or flow pattern occur. The predictive modeling techniques are explained primarily from a theoretical background. However, extensive bibliographies can guide the uninitiated to specific texts and software. Where controversial techniques have been presented, alternate methods are also described. Major topic areas include water quality problems, channel modification and management, ecological modeling and management, as well as a section on perspectives for ecological management and special problems in developing nations.
