Die Wirtschaftlichkeit von Unternehmen ist von den jeweiligen Mitarbeitern abhängig. So sind z.B. das Betriebsklima innerhalb der Institutionen und die Bedingungen des Arbeitsplatzes wichtige Faktoren für die Leistungsbereitschaft des Personals. Gut geführte Unternehmen sind nur möglich, wenn die im Betrieb tätigen Fachkräfte qualifiziert sind. Die Aufgabe der Betrieblichen Sozialen Arbeit ist u. a. die Unterstützung der Leitungskräfte und Mitarbeiter eines Unternehmens bei den anfallenden Problemen oder Entscheidungen im Umgang mit Menschen. Kaum ein anderer Berufsstand befasst sich so stark mit dem Spannungsfeld Mensch und Arbeit wie die Soziale Arbeit, die in einem Unternehmen tätig ist. Durch das New Public Management (auch: neues Steuerungsmodell) wuchs ihre Bedeutung zugleich für die Soziale Arbeit in den verschiedensten Institutionen. Durch die derzeitigen umfangreichen Veränderungen in den Unternehmen, besonders durch die Einführung neuer Managementmethoden und sozialpolitischen Gesetzesänderungen, eröffnet sich eine Vielzahl neuer Handlungsmöglichkeiten für die Betriebliche Soziale Arbeit. Die Bewältigung von Problemen im finanziellen, familiären, persönlichen und gesundheitlichen Bereich bei Beschäftigten sowie die Beratung bei Schwierigkeiten und Konflikten am Arbeitsplatz gehören zum traditionellen Aufgabenfeld der Betrieblichen Sozialen Arbeit und haben großen Einfluss auf die Arbeitsqualität der Mitarbeiter. Aber auch die wachsende Zahl der älteren Menschen in der Arbeitswelt, die aufgrund der hohen Lebenserwartung in der heutigen Zeit eine Veränderung der Alterspyramide hervorrufen, sind Spannungsfelder in Unternehmen. Innerhalb dieser und anderer Bereiche, wie z.B. das Betriebliche Eingliederungsmanagement und der Gesundheitsförderung, zeigen sich dringende sozialpädagogische und sozialpolitische Handlungsbedürfnisse. Sie nahm ab etwa 1900 unter der Bezeichnung Fabrikpflege ihren Anfang und existiert heutzutage immer noch, vorwiegend unter dem Namen betriebliche Sozialberatung. Um für die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit ein Fundament zu liefern, soll gleich zum Anfang an dieser Stelle die von Stoll stammende Definition der Betrieblichen Sozialarbeit stehen. Betriebliche Sozialarbeit meint die ethisch begründeten (sozial-) pädagogischen Interventionen speziell ausgebildeter Fachkräfte, mit deren Hilfe Unternehmen einem Teil ihrer sozialen Verantwortung gerecht werden und einen Beitrag zur Humanisierung der Arbeitswelt leisten. Reagiert wird damit auf das Spannungsfeld wirtschaftlicher Abläufe und menschlicher bzw. sozialer Frage- und Problemstellungen sowie der sich daraus ergebenden leistungsmindernden Reibungspunkte. Präventiv soll die Entstehung von unnötigen Konfliktsituationen verhindert werden. Ziel ist, prozessbegleitend auf sozial verträglicher Weise zum Wachstum des Unternehmens beizutragen. Die Interventionen beziehen sich dabei auf die in das Unternehmen hineinwirkende Faktoren mit Einfluss auf die Beschäftigten sowie auf die Situation der einzelnen ArbeitnehmerInnen. Beachtung finden muss dabei ihr gesamtgesellschaftlicher Kontext und/oder die sich im Unternehmen ergebenden sozialen Bezüge und Problemstellungen mit Wirkung auf Einzelne oder Gruppen bzw. Systeme . Stolls Definition ist sehr umfassend und liefert einige wichtige Orientierungspunkte wie z.B. Prozessbegleitung, Konflikte und leistungsmindernde Reibungspunkte, gesamtgesellschaftlicher Kontext, speziell ausgebildete Fachkräfte, etc., die in den nachfolgenden Kapiteln, wenn es darum geht die Betriebliche Sozialarbeit plausibel im Kontext PE zu platzieren ihre Berücksichtigung finden werden. Der Anspruch auf eine angemessene Beteiligung am Wachstum der Unternehmen und die den Fachkräften implizit zugeschriebenen dafür notwendigen Kompetenzen, wie sie aus dieser Definition herausklingen, finden in der betrieblichen Wirklichkeit jedoch kaum einen Niederschlag. Wenn die Feststellungen Lau-Villingers stimmen, dann lag der Schlüssel für die Betriebliche Soziale Arbeit vor 15 Jahren bei 1:6600. Aktuellere Daten liegen hier nicht vor, aber dieser Schlüssel dürfte sich bis Dato nicht wesentlich geändert haben.
