Book Synopsis Minimal Residual Disease in Hematologic Malignancies by : Raanani P Ed
Download or read book Minimal Residual Disease in Hematologic Malignancies written by Raanani P Ed and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) is increasingly used in the management of leukemia patients. A wide variety of methods have been developed and include technologies designed to detect residual malignant cells beyond the sensitivity of conventional approaches such as morphology and banding cytogenetics in leukemia. The choice of the best method depends on the biology of the individual malignancy, i.e. on the determination of specific markers which are useful to differentiate between leukemic cells and normal hematopoiesis in leukemic patients. These markers include leukocyte differentiation antigens, fusion transcripts, transcripts overexpressed by mutated or nonmutated genes, rearranged genes, and individual markers like polymorphic repetitive DNA sequences. The major technologies for MRD detection, their advantages and disadvantages and their clinical applications are discussed in this special issue - from 'bench to bedside'. Providing a comprehensive overview on the significance of MRD in the evaluation, treatment and follow-up of hematologic malignancies, it will be of great value to hematologists, researchers interested in leukemias and lymphomas as well as laboratory technicians.

Book Synopsis New Approaches to the Treatment of Leukemia by : Emil J. Freireich
Download or read book New Approaches to the Treatment of Leukemia written by Emil J. Freireich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European School of Oncology came into existence to respond to a need for informa tion, education and training in the field of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. There are two main reasons why such an initiative was considered necessary. Firstly, the teaching of oncology requires a rigorously multidisciplinary approach which is difficult for the Universi ties to put into practice since their system is mainly disciplinary orientated. Secondly, the rate of technological development that impinges on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer has been so rapid that it is not an easy task for medical faculties to adapt their curricula flexibly. With its residential courses for organ pathologies and the seminars on new techniques (laser, monoclonal antibodies, imaging techniques etc.) or on the principal therapeutic controversies (conservative or mutilating surgery, primary or adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy alone or integrated), it is the ambition of the European School of Oncology to fill a cultural and scientific gap and, thereby, create a bridge between the University and Industry and between these two and daily medical practice.

Book Synopsis Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate by : Andrew W. Bruce
Download or read book Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate written by Andrew W. Bruce and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carcinoma of the prostate increasingly dominates the attention of urologists for both scientific and clinical reasons. The search for an explanation and the prediction of the variable behaviour of the malignant prostatic cell continues unabated. The search for more precise tumour staging and more effective treatment is equally vigorous. Editors Andrew Bruce and John Trachtenberg have assembled acknowledged leaders in prostate cancer to present those areas of direct interest to the clinician. There are a number of other topics that might have been considered but most of these, such as experimental tumour models or biochemical factors affecting cell growth, still lack immediate application for the clinician. Carcinoma of the prostate continues to have its highest incidence in the western world, and the difference in comparison with the incidence in the Far East appears to be real and not masked by diagnostic or other factors. A number of other epidemiological aspects need careful analysis: Is the incidence increasing? Is the survival improving? Is the prognosis worse in the younger patient? Epidemiological data are easily misused and misinterpreted so that a precise analysis of the known facts makes an important opening chapter to this book.
