Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk Management today has moved from being the topic of top level conferences and media discussions to being a permanent issue in the board and top management agenda. Several new directives and regulations in Switzerland, Germany and EU make it obligatory for the firms to have a risk management strategy and transparently disclose the risk management process to their stakeholders. Shareholders, insurance providers, banks, media, analysts, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders expect the board members to be pro-active in knowing the critical risks facing their organization and provide them with a reasonable assurance vis-à-vis the management of those risks. In this environment however, the lack of standards and training opportunities makes this task difficult for board members. This book with the help of real life examples, analysis of drivers, interpretation of the Swiss legal requirements, and information based on international benchmarks tries to reach out to the forward looking leaders of today's businesses. The authors have collectively brought their years of scientific and practical experience in risk management, Swiss law and board memberships together to provide the board members practical solutions in risk management. The desire is that this book will clear the fear regarding risk management from the minds of the company leadership and help them in making risk savvy decisions in quest to achieve their strategic objectives.

The book is clearly written with a dynamic flow of leadership information that will expand the knowledge of its readers. The updated text is crafted with judicious knowledge and a point of focus for clarity of information and useful, practical application specifically to mid-level police managers. The content of the book is non-traditional in many respects but yet very familiar to contemporary innovative leadership teachings. The text has advanced beyond the traditional and ordinary to introduce some psychological and managerial theories not typically applied to secondary leaders. The contextual content of this text is aimed at operational behavior of mid-level secondary police leaders to attain desired performance of line workers through interactive and specifically focused management actions. The author addresses the loss of control of consumers over critical aspects, specifically quality of service, when using services from the cloud.Basically, the cloud computing paradigm places the responsibility for resource management on the provider side. Hence, the control over cloud service performance is very limited on the consumer side.

Book excerpt: The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE) is responsible for the safe cleanup of sites used for nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. Low-level radioactive waste (LLW) is the most volumetrically significant waste stream generated by the DOE cleanup program. LLW is also generated through commercial activities such as nuclear power plant operations and medical treatments. The laws and regulations related to the disposal of LLW in the United States have evolved over time and across agencies and states, resulting in a complex regulatory structure. DOE asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to organize a workshop to discuss approaches for the management and disposition of LLW. Participants explored the key physical, chemical, and radiological characteristics of low-level waste that govern its safe and secure management and disposal in aggregate and in individual waste streams, and how key characteristics of low level waste are incorporated into standards, orders, and regulations that govern the management and disposal of LLW in the United States and in other major waste-producing countries. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
