Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to conduct a strategic analysis of Sainsbury’s, a UK based supermarket with an objective to dominate the European retail industry. With its establishment in 1869, Sainsbury’s features as a reputable supermarket chain in the UK. By 2020, its annual revenue was around £26,334 million, thereby guaranteeing its role as one of the foremost UK supermarkets within the retailing industry. Since inception, the organization has incorporated a self-service method of shopping into the UK supermarket; a strategy that enabled it reinforce its position within the industry till 1991, when it nearly collapsed. Sainsbury’s strategic plan endured a significant amount of challenges, all of which required its mitigation to advance in its efficiency in service delivery. For example, the revival of its arch-competitor, Tesco challenged its expansion efforts in an effort to continue to obtain a substantial position within the UK market. At the same time, its leadership uncertainties endanger its efforts towards continuity, especially with reference to implementation of its strategic plan. With reference to the competition; ASDA also features as an opposition within the UK retailing industry, posing considerable threat to the market supremacy of Sainsbury’s.

Book excerpt: The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the Challenge at Tesco explores how UK multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer Tesco addresses the challenge of managing its supply chains. The book examines how Tesco has used lean thinking, loyalty and simplicity to achieve its dominant position. It shows how Tesco's senior leadership made a simple but game-changing decision to focus the business on its customers rather than the conventional approach of 'competing with our competitors' and asks whether the approach to managing the supply chain needs to be adapted to deal with current challenges that Tesco faces. The authors look at how the retailer developed and maintains one of the most effective supply chains in the world. The Lean Supply Chain demonstrates Tesco's most successful strategies through real life examples, drawing upon the authors' deep knowledge of how Tesco has developed and succeeded from both an academic and practitioner perspective. It includes an assessment of how Tesco is dealing with current challenges and market changes, including its successful rollout of online shopping and convenience stores as well as how it is attempting to maintain its position as the UK's largest retailer.

This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication originally formed part of a Master’s degree dissertation completed in 2011 by Nabeel. Research was undertaken over a period of two years at a Further Education college and a small private college where Nabeel delivered a level 7 post-graduate management programme accredited by a leading UK awarding organisation. A range of curriculum-level strategies were deployed by Nabeel and his colleagues in order to embed equality and diversity and reduce barriers to learning for international students undertaking the programme. These had a positive pedagogical and performance-related impact. The findings will be of particular interest to teachers and managers responsible for undergraduate, post-graduate and professional programmes being delivered to international students or to learners whose first language is not English, as well as those considering curriculum-level and progression strategies for business and management programmes at level three and above. The research may also provide useful insight to managers and teachers of other subject areas which are internally assessed. The findings are correct as at February 2011. Minor updates have been made to the case study, as well as selective editing and certain stakeholders have been anonymised for ethical reasons. Although the national landscape may have changed since 2011, the strategies applied remain valid and independent of such context. Research questions considered in this dissertation: What constitutes embedding of Equality and Diversity at curriculum level? What are the likely barriers to student learning / achievement on the PGDMS (Level 7 Management) programme? What elements should be prioritised for embedding at curriculum level in order to improve E & D for Blue College PGDMS (Level 7 Management) students? This publication builds on and incorporates the literature review published and entitled: Equality and Diversity: Embedding Equality and Diversity into the Curriculum - a literature review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which products and services are delivered to consumers, through branches and retail outlets, or more generally through a network of distribution channels, remains fundamentally important for maintaining a competitive advantage for a very wide range of businesses. This is true within domestic markets, but especially so for increasingly global corporations, as shareholder pressure for continued growth drives businesses into ever more widespread geographical markets. Arguing that more complex markets demand more sophisticated spatial analysis, this book discusses the application of location planning techniques to generate competitive advantage in a variety of business sectors in a changing retail environment. The series of techniques are analysed, from relatively straightforward branch scorecards to sophisticated applications of geographical information systems (GIS), spatial modelling and mathematical optimisation. Also explored are the changing dynamics of the impact of more restrictive planning environments in many countries on how retailers find new locations for growth and respond to changing consumer needs and wants. The book is essential reading for students and scholars alike working in geography, economics, business management, planning, finance and industry studies.
