Book excerpt: "Through the 21st Century Looking Glass" - USA Today by Grady Harp "Mel Mathews is a sensitive observer of the human condition, with an emphasis on the Male Human Condition of our time. He has created a character in Malcolm Clay that is a baby boomer Holden Caulfield, a variation on John Updike's Rabbit Angstrom, and he manages to take us by the hand and lead us through the bumpy terrain of current interpersonal relationships as well as anyone writing today."We first met Malcolm Clay in Mathew's first novel Chronicles of a Wandering Soul: Book 1- 'LeRoi' as a middle aged man trapped in a successful but boring occupation who becomes stranded in a dusty little truck stop where he is forced to slow his pace to adjust to the fertile characters he created there. Well, now Malcolm is living in Carmel, California, having been divorced, forgoing his childhood entrapping religious heritage, traipsing through many brief and physically oriented affairs while deciding to change his life as an alcoholic tractor salesman to that of a reformed AA writer ('..he didn't think anyone should be called an addict, alcoholic, codependent, or any other of the pathologized clinical diagnosis that propelled a person into another lie'). His existence is populated in this gorgeous coastline area of California by all manner of women and men whose connection to life is through tenuous strings tied to fairly shallow buoys. Most of the novel is conversational, with Malcolm discovering the intrinsic personality defects of characters ranging from his landlady Mrs. Shams to men on the make to physical therapist Jenny who manages to keep a physical distance between the lusty but controlled Malcolm and her fragile, purging diet, Zen-like self. This is a journey so well written that the novel calls for pause to enjoy the sheer ebullience of the verbiage. Mel Mathews is a fine writer, finding his way through life in these times. He is a reliable companion on the trek we all are taking. And now on to the next volume in the series, Chronicles of a Wandering Soul: Book 3 - 'SamSara', addictively!

So when his father’s private jet drops him in the middle of the Arkansas wilderness, at a place called the Oasis, Jett can’t believe it. He’s forced to hand over his cell phone, eat grainy veggie patties, and participate in wholesome activities with the other kids, who he has absolutely no interest in hanging out with. As the weeks go on, Jett starts to get used to the unplugged life and even bonds with the other kids over their discovery of a baby-lizard-turned-pet, Needles. But he can’t help noticing that the adults at the Oasis are acting really strange. Jett is determined to get to the bottom of things, but can he convince everybody that he is no longer just a spoiled brat who is making trouble?

When Unplugged Play was first published as a parent-friendly encyclopedia of games and activities for all ages, Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, called it “A terrific prescription for much of what ails children and parents today.” Now Unplugged Play gets a fresh and appealing new life as three separate, brightly designed books, each targeted to a specific age group. The need, of course, is significantly more pressing than when the book was originally published—screens are far more ubiquitous, causing parents even greater concern about their overuse—and these timeless, imaginative, easy-to-implement games are here to the rescue. Each volume includes games to play alone and games to play with siblings and friends and parents. Games to play indoors and games for outside. There are craft projects, music activities, guessing games—the kinds of truly fun activities designed to stretch the imagination, spark creativity, build strong bodies, forge friendships, and explore the real world. The opposite of hunkering down in front of an addictive screen.

Book excerpt: The Disconnected Man tracks the journey of one man's surprise discovery of his own disconnectedness and his desire to help other men, and the women who love them, before it is too late. Disconnected men hide out in plain view: in our churches, in our families and in our communities. They are competent, capable men who quietly 'do their duty' and attract little attention. They are fairly happy guys, relatively unemotional and capable of carrying heavy loads of responsibility, but are very difficult to get to know beyond superficial friendship. A closer examination inside their marriages reveals a desert strewn with emotionally emaciated spouses. While their competence may build the church, organize a group, or run a company, they haven't the slightest notion how to connect intimately with those they love. Their wives suffer, usually in silence, while the church and culture press past this couple secretly falling apart. Jim Turner was that disconnected man going about his life, happily fulfilling his duty within his own self-protective bubble, until God suddenly burst it in a most horrific way. His story starts when that devastation left him clinging precariously to the remaining shreds of his broken marriage. Jim longs to share with other disconnected men what he learned through that ordeal, to help them understand their disobedience and show how they can achieve real connection with those they love.

Book excerpt: The scheme was insanely brilliant: teams of Al Qaeda operatives sneaking their way onto American soil under every conceivable disguise, and by any deadly means possible. The collaboration is unfathomable: emissaries in the upper-echelon of our own Government are aiding them. The potential for terror is overwhelming: a cache of deadly weapons smuggled into the country at their disposal-and positioned for firing on the Fourth of July. Burned by their own government, the Superhawks have escaped imprisonment and are vowing to take on the mission themselves-locate the weapons, hunt down Al Qaeda's men, and let loose the righteous vengeance they've earned. Using deep intelligence from super-spy Bobby Murphy, the hit squad has joined forces with the New Underground-a citizens band of all-Americans ready to stand up and fight. Time is running out. The mega-attack is at hand. But so are the Superhawks.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author and senior fellow at the Discovery Institute blends science and religion in this thoughtful guide that teaches modern believers how to use the leading wellness trend today—intermittent fasting—as a means of spiritual awakening, adopting the traditions our Christians ancestors practiced for centuries into daily life. Wellness minded people today are increasingly turning to intermittent fasting to bolster their health. But we aren’t the first people to abstain from eating for a purpose. This routine was a common part of our spiritual ancestors’ lives for 1,500 years. Jay Richards argues that Christians should recover the fasting lifestyle, not only to improve our bodies, but to bolster our spiritual health as well. In Eat, Fast, Feast, he combines forgotten spiritual wisdom on fasting and feasting with the burgeoning literature on ketogenic diets and fasting for improved physical and mental health. Based on his popular series “Fasting, Body and Soul” in The Stream, Eat, Fast, Feast explores what it means to substitute our hunger for God for our hunger for food, and what both modern science and the ancient monastics can teach us about this practice. Richards argues that our modern diet—heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates—locks us into a metabolic trap that makes fasting unfruitful and our feasts devoid of meaning. The good news, he reveals, is that we are beginning to resist the tyranny of processed foods, with millions of people pursuing low carb, ketogenic, paleo, and primal diets. This growing body of experts argue that eating natural fat and fasting is not only safe, but far better than how we eat today. Richards provides a 40-day plan which combines a long-term “nutritional ketosis” with spiritual disciplines. The plan can be used any time of the year or be adapted to a penitential season on the Christian calendar, such as Advent or Lent. Synthesizing recent science with ancient wisdom, Eat, Fast, Feast brings together the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of intermittent fasting to help Christians improve their lives and their health, and bring them closer to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get on the case with Kathryn Dance. Three novels featuring California Bureau of Investigations body language expert Agent Kathryn Dance from internationally bestselling suspense master and seven-time Edgar Award nominee Jeffery Deaver, plus an excerpt from the next Kathryn Dance novel, XO (publishing June 2012). The Cold Moon On a freezing December night, with a full moon hovering over New York City, two people are brutally murdered. The death scenes are marked by eerie, matching calling cards: moon-faced clocks that investigators fear ticked away the victims' last moments on earth. Renowned criminologist Lincoln Rhyme immediately identifies the clock distributor and has the chilling realization that the killer—who has dubbed himself the Watchmaker—has more murders planned in the hours to come. With Rhyme’s longtime love Amelia Sachs now busy as the lead detective on a homicide case of her own, it will take the expertise of Agent Kathryn Dance to stop the Watchmaker killings and unravel the trail of a diabolical criminal masterwork in the making. The Sleeping Doll Daniel Pell, the “Son of Manson,” is serving a life sentence for the brutal murders of the wealthy Croyton family, a crime mirroring those perpetrated by Charles Manson in the 1960s, and that left behind only one survivor: the youngest Croyton daughter, who, because she was in bed hidden by her toys, was dubbed “the Sleeping Doll.” When Agent Kathryn Dance is called in to interrogate Pell in connection with a recent murder, the psychological jousting match that ensues goes terribly wrong, and Pell escapes. But far from simply fleeing, Pell turns on his pursuers—and other innocents—for reasons Dance and her colleagues can’t discern. The only person who can help her find the pattern in Pell’s rampage is the now-teenage girl who lay as though asleep through that terrible night. Roadside Crosses The Monterey Peninsula is rocked by fear when a killer begins to leave roadside crosses beside local highways—not in memoriam, but as announcements of his intentions to kill. And he kills in particularly horrific and efficient ways: using personal details about his victims that they've carelessly posted in blogs and on social networking websites. Agent Kathryn Dance traces the leads to Travis Brigham, a troubled teenager whose role in a fatal car accident has inspired vicious attacks against him on a popular blog, The Chilton Report. To get to Brigham, Dance must overcome speechifying politicians, paranoid parents, and the blogger himself, James Chilton, whose willingness to derail the case—and possibly Dance’s career—soon forces Dance to take desperate measures. XO (excerpt) Country-pop ingénue Kayleigh Towne’s career is reaching new heights with her huge hit single “Your Shadow”—but increased fame is also bringing unwanted attention to the young singer. An innocent exchange with one of her fans, signed with an “XO,” leads Kayleigh into a dangerous and terrifying realm of obsession. Despite her clear rejection and threats from lawyers and law enforcers, Edwin Sharp remains convinced that Kayleigh loves him, and he announces he's coming for her. A series of accidents and disturbing phone calls lead Kayleigh to believe her life is in danger, and soon people close to Kayleigh die. Agent Kathryn Dance must stop the stalker—but before long she learns that, like many celebrities, Kayleigh has more than one fan with a mission…

This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words of this book are based upon Christ’s declaration: “I am the way, the truth, and the life . . .” St. John 14:6. This Holy Ghost inspired book will have every reader reexamining their faith in Christ, their walk in God, and even the way they currently display God’s Agape love in this world.I am come unto you as a friend, and truly I write unto you in much fear and trembling in the Holy Ghost. I come not in mine own name, but in the name of him who has sent me to testify unto the truth; and in him is no lie, even he which is Jesus Christ, our Lord. Now there is utterly a fault in the church from the least to the greatest: those who preach haven’t been sent to preach, and those who teach have not the anointing; and those who prophesy unto you have prophesied a lie because they have altogether deceived the people; and because of your carrying away you shall be one with their damnation. While reading this book, you shall learn the truth of your God and Creator, and of his Son, Jesus Christ. You shall learn how to identify the voice of God in your hearing, and how he speaks to you. You will learn how and why the Lord, God is so attached to man, and why he loves man so much. You will learn why you must be born again; moreover, you will discover what it is you need to do (what's your part in the kingdom of God) to truly be a light to others in this world. You will discover the reason why both faith and love are the keys to life in the kingdom of God, and the role they play in salvation. You will learn how to properly utilize and deploy your faith in a powerful new way. And even though you might know the basics of faith, today you will learn why its works have been a great mystery to the church. Today we will unlock this mystery together, and you will find that you now, not only can please God, but that you will also learn how easy it is for you to do his will and overcome all things by faith. You will also learn who your heavenly Father really is, as you come to realize that he has been waiting a long to meet you.Above all else, you will learn the reasons why the miracles, spoken of in St. Mark 16:16-18., are not occurring in the church today, and why the ministers and preachers of our day have not been bringing forth the word with signs following as had the apostles. You will be taught many things that you may have never been taught in the church, or have been taught improperly; such as the Constancy, the Fidelity, and the Faithfulness of God in the reality of himself. You will learn not only what these words mean, but you will learn how to apply them to your life as you grow in Christ. Little children, I am only asking of you is to listen to his voice today. This book is a book of instructions given in hopes of making "YOU ALL" true Disciples of Christ. My one and only prayer for you all is that you don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn the truth about your heavenly Father, so that you do not go, The Impossible Way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men who act abusively have their own story to tell, a journey that often begins in childhood, ripens in their teenage years, and takes them down paths they were hoping to never travel. Men Who Batter recounts the journey from the point of view of the men themselves. The men's accounts of their lives are told within a broader framework of the agency where they have attended groups, and the regional coordinated community response to domestic violence, which includes the criminal justice workers (e.g., probation, parole, judges), and those who staff shelters and work in advocacy. Based on interview data with this wide array of professionals, we are able to examine how one community, in one western state, responds to men who batter. Interwoven with this rich and colorful portrayal of the journey of abusive men, we bring twenty years of fieldwork with survivors and those who walk alongside them as they seek safety, healing and wholeness for themselves and their children. Women who have been victimized by the men they love often hold out hope that, if only their abusers could be held accountable and receive intervention, the violence will stop and their own lives will improve dramatically as a result. While the main purpose of Men Who Batter is to highlight the stories of men, told from their personal point of view, it is countered by reality checks from their own case files and those professionals who have worked with them. And finally, interspersed within its pages is another theme: finding religious faith or spiritual activity in unlikely places.
