Book Synopsis Noon at Five O'Clock by : Arthur Yap
Download or read book Noon at Five O'Clock written by Arthur Yap and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks the recovery and first combined publication of the stories of Arthur Yap, one of Singapore's most accomplished and important writers. A hitherto neglected facet of Yap's opus, his eight short stories are deceptive in their simplicity, housing within their sparse prose a complex engagement with Singapore society from which he wrote. With his signature minimalistic style, Yap simultaneously perplexes readers with stories of seemingly plotless ambiguity, yet draws them in with familiar characters playing out situations that still resonate in twenty-first century Singapore today. Angus Whitehead's introduction highlights literary nuances in the stories and frames the stories within the wider backdrop of social change of Singapore at the time of Yap's writing. The meticulous critical apparatus make this book of interest to not only the general reader but also students of Singapore and Southeast Asian literature in English.

Book excerpt: The Griffin and Other Poems is the author's latest and fourth poetic endeavor, written to shed light on current events from a feminist's perspective, using symbolism as well as empathy in traditional as well as modern ways. The author tries to evaluate precisely what is happening in the world scene, from crime to terrorism, and gives voice to what often goes voiceless: the misery, anxiety, and tumultuous of the human condition. For the first time, the poet has included a comic play, Since Cocks Don't lay Eggs, in verse at the end of her compilation which is over seventy pages long, and plans to write more plays in the near future - God willing, she would like to add.
Book Synopsis Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent by : Leo Suryadinata
Download or read book Southeast Asian Personalities of Chinese Descent written by Leo Suryadinata and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a bold project recording the lives of a particular group of Southeast Asians. Most of the people whose biographies are included here have settled down in the ten countries that constitute the region. Each of them has either self-identified as Chinese or is comfortable to be known as someone of Chinese ancestry. There are also those who were born in China or elsewhere who came here to work and do business, including seeking help from others who have ethnic Chinese connections. With the political and economic conditions of the region in a great state of flux for the past two centuries, it is impossible to find consistency in the naming process. Confucius had stressed that correct names make for the best relationships. In this case, Professor Leo Suryadinata has been pursuing for decades the elusive goal of finding the right name to give to the large numbers of people who have, in one way or another, made their homes in, or made some difference to, Southeast Asia. I believe that, when he and his colleagues selected the biographies to be included here, they have taken a big step towards the rectification of identities for many leading personalities. In so doing, he has done us all a great service." - Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore

By addressing such questions, and by bringing together scholars, writers, and translators of poetry, this volume offers unique insights into Sinophone Studies, while sparking a transdisciplinary dialogue with Poetry Studies, Translation Studies and Cultural Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The papers in this volume were delivered at the Symposium on Literature in Asia and the Pacific Region: Perceiving Other Worlds held in Singapore in November 1989. Writers, critics and scholars from Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, North America and Britain addressed some of the major contemporary literary issues, including the ""Other and I"", the formation of identity in two or more cultures, the loss and recovery of tradition, the re-creation of meaning, and the re-writing of literary paradigms and history. A central impetus is the concern with the importance and fullness of ""I"" when it is ""the Other"". This is linked to challenges posed by the rich varieties of other worlds."
Book Synopsis Poetry and the Anthropocene by : Sam Solnick
Download or read book Poetry and the Anthropocene written by Sam Solnick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks what it means to write poetry in and about the Anthropocene, the name given to a geological epoch where humans have a global ecological impact. Combining critical approaches such as ecocriticism and posthumanism with close reading and archival research, it argues that the Anthropocene requires poetry and the humanities to find new ways of thinking about unfamiliar spatial and temporal scales, about how we approach the metaphors and discourses of the sciences, and about the role of those processes and materials that confound humans’ attempts to control or even conceptualise them. Poetry and the Anthropocene draws on the work of a series of poets from across the political and poetic spectrum, analysing how understandings of technology shape literature about place, evolution and the tradition of writing about what still gets called Nature. The book explores how writers’ understanding of sciences such as climatology or biochemistry might shape their poetry’s form, and how literature can respond to environmental crises without descending into agitprop, self-righteousness or apocalyptic cynicism. In the face of the Anthropocene’s radical challenges to ethics, aesthetics and politics, the book shows how poetry offers significant ways of interrogating and rendering the complex relationships between organisms and their environments in a world increasingly marked by technology.
