Book excerpt: The Shepherd of the Hills is the classic story of the stranger who takes the Old Trail deep into the Ozark Mountains, many miles from civilization. His appearance signals intellect and culture, yet his countenance is marked by grief and disappointment. What is his purpose in taking on the lowly work of tending local sheep? And how is it that he befriends these simple hill folk, despite his coming from the world beyond the ridges? Mystery and romance envelop this gentle yet compelling story as the identity and purpose of the stranger-turned-shepherd is gradually unveiled.

Book excerpt: Katharine Stewart, who died in 2013, was one of Scotland's best-loved writers on rural life in the Highlands. A Croft in the Hills, her first book, tells the story of how a couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, took over a remote hill croft near Loch Ness and made a living from it. Full of warm personal insights, good humour and a love of living things, it has become a classic and has rarely been out of print since it was first published in 1960. This omnibus gathers A Croft in the Hills together with some of Katharine's later books: A Garden in the Hills, describing a year in the life of her Highland garden; A School in the Hills, a vivid history of the school at Abriachan which eventually became the Stewarts' family home; and The Post in the Hills, which tells the dramatic story of the postal service in the Highlands, from the point of view of Katharine's later role as postmistress of the smallest post office in Scotland, run from the porch of her Abriachan schoolhouse. Each of these books glows with what Neil Gunn described as 'its unusual quality, its brightness and its wisdom'. The omnibus will bring the grace, charm and wisdom of Katharine Stewart's writing to a new generation of readers.

Suddenly Talon found himself in the middle of a range war, siding with the man he’d marked for payback. But had Rossiter really changed? And could his daughter be trusted by either of them? For Milo, getting to the truth meant a long hard fight to separate his enemies from his friends—and forgiveness from revenge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Horatio Clare was born, his parents fell in love with a place -- a remote sheep farm in Wales, physically and in every other way far from the lives they were forging as young professionals in London. The farm was high up a mountain, nearly impassable in winter. The neighbors were surly, or perhaps just unused to foreigners. But the setting was breathtaking, and soon it changed Jenny's and Robert's lives. What began as the somewhat conventional dream of a young, ambitious couple from London looking for a weekend home quickly became a different vision. Horatio's mother, romantic and tenacious, found it impossible to leave the fierce and beautiful land. She abandoned her job, her social world, and eventually her marriage to raise her two sons in the company of a herd of sheep, a few dogs, and the badgers, foxes, and mice who had prior claim to her new world. While other boys were going to films and listening to rock music, Horatio was weaning ewes and watching weather and surviving the furor of irascible neighbors. His childhood was marked by wonder and joy, and it is that wonderment that he bestows upon the reader as he recounts the story of the ancient, sometimes brutal, way of life on a hill farm. This wise book is a moving tribute to his mother, both beautiful and brave.

Book excerpt: BLOOD ON THE BLUEGRASS is a novel featuring a Vietnam veteran named Cody Breathett, whose savage killing techniques in battle had earned him the nickname, Bloody BReathett. In Vietnam, he had teamed up with Jack Hollister, a fellow Kentucky native. Together they terrorized and killed countless Vietcong, cutting off the ears of their victims and wore them as ornaments around their necks. Convinces they were psychotic killers, the army gave them medals and sent them home as war heroes. Breathett returned to tobacco farmng and Hillister joined the Kentucky State Police. While working under cover on a drug case, Hollister discovered a three million dollar drug deal that was about to go down. He convinced Breathett to help him rob the drug dealers, and they became instant millionaires. BReathett buys farms and Hollister invests in the stock market. Breathett meets Lisa Wayne, a pretty young Thoroughbred jockey. He pursues and marries her. On the day she plans to tell him she is pregnant, the Hill Hawk motorcycle gang kidnaps her. She is brutally ravished and maimed before they kill her. Bloody Breathett began a self-imposed basic training. When fully prepared, he begins to methodically take his revenge. One by one, in incredibly horrendous fashion he hunts tortures, and kills the gang members. The Briar mode of vengeance dominates this story, softened only by the women that come to love Bloddy Breathett.

Book excerpt: Set and published during the time the British Raj, a time of subalterns and tea planters, tiffin and bands playing ‘The Roast Beef of England’, the forty stories in Plain Tales From The Hills are played out under an unforgiving sun, revealing the deceit, faithlessness, shallowness, despair, mistrust, hate and petty jealousies rife amongst the British inhabitants of India. Fascinating, funny, tragic, immensely readable and witty, these stories provide an invaluable insight into life in India during the British Raj, introducing us to the work of one of the most beloved writers of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Still remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Best known for his acclaimed novel River of Earth (1940), the Alabama native and adopted Kentuckian left an enduring legacy of novels, stories, and poems during his nearly seventy year career. The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Still honors the late writer by collecting all of Still's short stories, including his stories from On Troublesome Creek (1941), Pattern of a Man and Other Stories (1976), and The Run for the Elbertas (1980), as well as twelve prose pieces originally published as short stories and later incorporated into River of Earth. Also included are several lesser-known stories and ten never-before-published stories. Recognized as a significant writer of short fiction in his day -- many of his stories initially appeared in The Atlantic and The Saturday Evening Post and were included in The O. Henry Memorial Award Stories and The Best American Short Stories collections -- Still's short stories, while often overshadowed in recent years by his novels and poetry, are among his most enduring literary works. Editor Ted Olson offers a reassessment of Still's short fiction within the contexts of the author's body of work and within Appalachian and American literature. Compiling all of James Still's compelling and varied short stories into one volume, The Hills Remember is a testament to a master writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of my PhD research work which was submitted and awarded from Deccan College Post-Graduate & Research Institute (Deemed University), Pune, India in 2015. I have chosen to work on “Nishi” as I was always fascinated about the tribal cultures. As Northeast India is a homeland of many tribal communities with living traditions, Nishis were one of them. They were the largest tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh as well as in Northeast India known for their brave attitudes. During British time in India, Nishis were the one who defeated the British to enter in their land. They killed many British officials, and the British feared them. Recollecting from the umpteen memories from my archive, some unsurpassable experiences must be mentioned here. It is known that Arunachal Pradesh is a state which is not easily accessible. To enter the state, one needs an ‘Inner Line Permit’ granted by the Arunachal Pradesh state authority and which is valid only for seven days. In this case, I had to return every week to Tezpur, Assam to renew my permission. It was very difficult for me to work for more than a month in this region for one field season. Despite the known facts regarding inner line permits the rich cultural and ethnographic data needed attention. Lush beauty and treasure are not easily accessible, so is the tribe. Nishis are always distinguished by their dress and head gear. Seeing the pictures of the tribe made me very curious to know more about them and understand their cultural heritage and traditions. Staying in the village with the Nishi people, collecting the wild plants in the hill forest, catching fish in the Kameng River are my lifetime memories. This book is a small token of gratitude towards all Nishi community and their cultural heritage.
