Book Synopsis Environment As a Focus for Public Policy by : Lynton Keith Caldwell
Download or read book Environment As a Focus for Public Policy written by Lynton Keith Caldwell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the environmental movement had gained prominence in this country, one writer began to explore the environment and the human condition as a topic of public policy. From 1963 through 1973 Lynton K. Caldwell was alone among political scientists and policy analysts in writing about the subject in any breadth or depth. His pioneering work led to his role as one of the architects of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970 and established environmental policy and politics as a field of academic research. Caldwell's early work is richly relevant to current understanding of environmental policy. This volume brings together the best of his writing from that first decade, making it available for policy debates, theorizing, and reference. This collection is of both historical significance and contemporary relevance and will be invaluable to the many scholars and professionals across various disciplines, fields, and nations who have read and been profoundly influenced by Caldwell's more recent work, including nine widely praised and cited books and dozens of articles. The fourteen articles and papers in this volume address the definition of environmental policy, analysis of international environmental policy development, and environmental policy as a product of and fundamental challenge to modernity. An original analytical introduction by the volume editors places Caldwell's early work in the context of the research that has followed. Caldwell has written, especially for this book, a new, retrospective chapter, a brief introduction to each article, and an epilogue on the meaning of environmental policy.

Book Synopsis U.S. Health in International Perspective by : National Research Council
Download or read book U.S. Health in International Perspective written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, but it is far from the healthiest. Although life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, Americans live shorter lives and experience more injuries and illnesses than people in other high-income countries. The U.S. health disadvantage cannot be attributed solely to the adverse health status of racial or ethnic minorities or poor people: even highly advantaged Americans are in worse health than their counterparts in other, "peer" countries. In light of the new and growing evidence about the U.S. health disadvantage, the National Institutes of Health asked the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a panel of experts to study the issue. The Panel on Understanding Cross-National Health Differences Among High-Income Countries examined whether the U.S. health disadvantage exists across the life span, considered potential explanations, and assessed the larger implications of the findings. U.S. Health in International Perspective presents detailed evidence on the issue, explores the possible explanations for the shorter and less healthy lives of Americans than those of people in comparable countries, and recommends actions by both government and nongovernment agencies and organizations to address the U.S. health disadvantage.
Book Synopsis Governing Climate Change by : Andrew Jordan
Download or read book Governing Climate Change written by Andrew Jordan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change governance is in a state of enormous flux. New and more dynamic forms of governing are appearing around the international climate regime centred on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). They appear to be emerging spontaneously from the bottom up, producing a more dispersed pattern of governing, which Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom famously described as 'polycentric'. This book brings together contributions from some of the world's foremost experts to provide the first systematic test of the ability of polycentric thinking to explain and enhance societal attempts to govern climate change. It is ideal for researchers in public policy, international relations, environmental science, environmental management, politics, law and public administration. It will also be useful on advanced courses in climate policy and governance, and for practitioners seeking incisive summaries of developments in particular sub-areas and sectors. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Waste Management in Greater China by : Natalie Wai Man Wong
Download or read book The Politics of Waste Management in Greater China written by Natalie Wai Man Wong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of municipal waste is a common challenge found in the urbanised cities of Greater China, but the question of how to manage municipal waste is controversial. Wong examines the politics of managing municipal waste in three cities of Greater China: Guangzhou, Taipei, and Hong Kong. She looks at the controversies that arise from the issue and the consequent politicisation of the various solutions that are adopted. Focusing particularly on the dynamics of policy actors in the three cities, she compares the different political situations in each with the others. This provides a valuable lens through which to explore the larger issue of the political transformation of Environmental Management in the Greater China region. A compelling insight into environmental policymaking in Greater China, for scholars studying the dynamics of Chinese politics.

Book Synopsis Understanding Environmental Administration and Law by : Susan J. Buck
Download or read book Understanding Environmental Administration and Law written by Susan J. Buck and published by Island Press. This book was released on 1991-12-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other field of public administration, environmental administration is defined by its legal content. Federal legislation has a direct and immediate impact on state and federal bureaucrats, and citizen groups must constantly adjust to changing standards for environmental protection and regulation. In Understanding Environmental Administration and Law, Susan J. Buck examines the use of environmental law by exploring the policy process through which such law is made, the political environment in which it is applied, and the statutory and case laws that are critical to working within the regulatory system. The book provides an analytic framework for the legal context of environmental administration and familiarizes readers with the development and implementation of the federal regulatory structure. First published in 1991, this revised and expanded edition includes new material on: the continuing evolution of environmentalism in the United States federalism and bureaucratic decision making within the context of the American legal system citizen suits, counter suits, and the increasingly restrictive perspective of the federal judiciary toward standing the property rights movement the impact of political changes on policy development Unlike most books that deal with environmental law, the focus of this volume is on understanding the law as a managerial tool and fitting it into the overall policy context. Anyone involved with the environment, from students to citizen activists to mid-level managers at the federal, state, and local level, will find it enormously valuable.
