Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Martha's Place . . . Martha Hawkins was the tenth of twelve children born in Montgomery, Alabama. There was no money, but her childhood was full of love. Martha's mother could transform a few vegetables from the backyard into a feast and never turned away a hungry mouth. Memories of the warmth of her family's supper table would remain with Martha. Even as a poor single mother without a high school diploma, Martha dreamed of one day opening a restaurant that would make people feel at home. She'd serve food that would nourish body and soul. But time went by and that dream slipped further and further away as Martha battled the onset of what would later become a severe mental illness. But the thing about hitting bottom is that there's nowhere to go but up. Martha decided to step into God's promise for her life. Her boundless faith and joy led her to people who would change her world and lend a helping hand when she most needed and least expected one. Martha's Place is now a nationally known destination for anyone visiting the Deep South and a culinary fixture of life in Montgomery. Martha only hires folks who are down on their luck, just as she once was. High-profile politicians, professional athletes, artists, musicians, and actors visit regularly. Martha has proven many times that keeping the faith makes the difference between failure and success. This is the story of how Martha finally found her place. . . .
Download or read book The Mamas written by Helena Andrews-Dyer and published by Crown. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can white moms and Black moms ever truly be friends? Not just mom friends, but like really real friends? And does it matter? “Utterly addictive . . . Through her sharp wit and dynamic anecdotal storytelling, Helena Andrews-Dyer shines a light on the cultural differences that separate Black and white mothers.”—Tia Williams, New York Times bestselling author of Seven Days in June Helena Andrews-Dyer lives in a “hot” Washington, D.C., neighborhood, which means picturesque row houses and plenty of gentrification. After having her first child, she joined the local mom group—“the Mamas”—and quickly realized that being one of the only Black mothers in the mix was a mixed bag. The racial, cultural, and socioeconomic differences were made clear almost immediately. But spending time in what she calls “the Polly Pocket world of postracial parenting” was a welcome reprieve. Then George Floyd happened. A man was murdered, a man who called out for his mama. And suddenly, the Mamas hit different. Though they were alike in some ways—they want their kids to be safe; they think their husbands are lazy; they work too much and feel guilty about it—Andrews-Dyer realized she had an entirely different set of problems that her neighborhood mom friends could never truly understand. In The Mamas, Andrews-Dyer chronicles the particular challenges she faces in a group where systemic racism can be solved with an Excel spreadsheet and where she, a Black, professional, Ivy League–educated mom, is overcompensating with every move. Andrews-Dyer grapples with her own inner tensions, like “Why do I never leave the house with the baby and without my wedding ring?” and “Why did every name we considered for our kids have to pass the résumé test?” Throw in a global pandemic and a nationwide movement for social justice, and Andrews-Dyer ultimately tries to find out if moms from different backgrounds can truly understand one another. With sharp wit and refreshing honesty, The Mamas explores the contradictions and community of motherhood—white and Black and everything—against the backdrop of the rapidly changing world.
Download or read book Hangar Sweepings written by Harold Mills and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Charles Lindbergh made his historic non-stop flight from NY to Paris, the whole country went air crazy. All the fashionable young women wore cloche hats with simulated goggles and danced the Lindy Hop. My Mom was one of these. The following year, when I was three, we stood in front yard and cheered when Lindy flew over in the Spirit of St. Louis in the front seat of Curtis Jenny. I never got over it. My Dad only flew once in his life, with me after I got a Private license. It was a trust thing. He sat in the back seat of Cub rigid as a board the whole time. These stories all first appeared in the Carolina Unicom which is the monthly newsletter of the EAA Chapter 1083 based at the Rowan County Airport in Salisbury NC. The stories were gleaned from my days as a Ramp Rat at the airport and 22 years as a Photo Interpreter in the Air Force. The pencil sketches were made by my youngest son, Curtis. Some of the photos were made by me, the others were made by my old friend, G.C. Luke Teeter, John Suther, Jim Torrence and Smith Kirk.
Book Synopsis For the Love of Mama by : Ontra Rodgers Reddick
Download or read book For the Love of Mama written by Ontra Rodgers Reddick and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Love of Mama is a candid and explicit look into the life of a young, confused woman through the eyes of her daughter who is trying to make sense of her life while trying to find her own way. Mama made many choices and suffered the consequences of these choices she made based on her immediate needs for a specific season in her life. The book shows how her decisions not only affected her, but how these decisions also affected her children who basically went through life, trying to find out who they were and where they belonged. The book shows how on one hand, her children grew up with a desire for the “proud look” they had witnessed from their youth and, on the other hand, the humbleness she always seemed to possess. They each tried to blend the two and ended up with an insatiable need to prove something to the world and to themselves that could not be satisfied. None of them knew who they really were. They just imitated people they saw and wanted to be like without stopping to count the cost. You will witness in For the Love of Mama how the seeds of God’s grace and mercy prevailed throughout Mama’s life. For the Love of Mama will touch your heart, and it is guaranteed to stir your emotions. You will agree that Mama was really something special and God truly had His hands on her all her life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written about one woman's journey from grief to grace and it is a message to encourage others to continue walking with God which can increase one's faith even through the shedding of tears, For the word of God declares that we are overcomers, first by the shedding of our Lord and Savior Jesus our Savior's blood and secondly, by the word of our testimony. So, as a believer, I want everyone to know that I am a living testimony of the goodness of God and a stronger witness that the God I serve, the God I believe in and the God we pray to continues to offer hope to anyone and everyone who believes and especially during the times we are experiencing pain, when we are suffering through the times of grief, he is closer than you think. This book is a detail of my life's journey from brokenness to Holiness also to highlight that anything and all things are possible with God. Lastly, I am a living witness that God honors His word above His name. It has been through the prophetic words that were spoken to me that have come to fulfillment. His word is life.

Book Synopsis Little Miss Sanctified by : Dr. Louis Timm’s
Download or read book Little Miss Sanctified written by Dr. Louis Timm’s and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-11-17 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Leeza celebrates her forty-fifth birthday, there is no birthday cake, candles, gifts, or party with family and friends. It’s just her, alone in a prison cell probably for the rest of her life. She contemplates how her life has gone so completely off track, and she recalls how it all began for her as a little girl growing up in Eden Square in the projects. Leeza wishes she could go back to being the little girl with the bad grammar and the big dreams, but it’s much too late for that now. She faces a death sentence. A work of spiritual fiction, Little Miss Sanctified, by author Dr. Louis Timm’s, lets God’s people know they are not alone and that there is that dark side that exists in all. Through Leeza’s fictional story, Timm’s shows Christians that the hand of a loving and living God offers a right sense of worth and direction; God alone knows the end from the beginning. With each and every temptation, God will provide a way of escape only to those who truly want to escape the vices this world so lavishly offers.
