Download or read book The Great Sea written by David Abulafia and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea has been for millennia the place where religions, economies, and political systems met, clashed, influenced and absorbed one another. In this brilliant and expansive book, David Abulafia offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the sea itself: its practical importance for transport and sustenance; its dynamic role in the rise and fall of empires; and the remarkable cast of characters-sailors, merchants, migrants, pirates, pilgrims-who have crossed and re-crossed it. Ranging from prehistory to the 21st century, The Great Sea is above all a history of human interaction. Interweaving major political and naval developments with the ebb and flow of trade, Abulafia explores how commercial competition in the Mediterranean created both rivalries and partnerships, with merchants acting as intermediaries between cultures, trading goods that were as exotic on one side of the sea as they were commonplace on the other. He stresses the remarkable ability of Mediterranean cultures to uphold the civilizing ideal of convivencia, "living together." Now available in paperback, The Great Sea is the definitive account of perhaps the most vibrant theater of human interaction in history.
Download or read book Between the Seas written by Deborah Paci and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Between the Seas, Deborah Paci takes a comparative view of islandness in island identities through case studies of islands in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. These case studies primarily include, in the Baltic case, the Åland Islands, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Ruhnu; and in the Mediterranean case, Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Examining multiple sites of these islands' identities such as history, environmental concerns and governance systems, this book provides a historical perspective into the relations between islands and the larger geopolitical regions around them, as well as historicizing 'insularist' rhetoric deployed by pro-independence groups within them. Paci examines the changing role and increasing political importance of islands in the European Union against the history of island insularity and offers a significant contribution to the wider field of island studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. This work is the fruit of a wider research programme called Occidentes - Horizons and projects of civilization in the Church of Pius XII. It brings together the work of seven historians from different European Universities.
Download or read book Malta written by David M. Boswell and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malta is an archipelago consisting of three islands (Gozo, Comino and Malta itself) located in the central Mediterranean. The strategic location of the islands has meant that they have long enjoyed an importance out of all proportion to their small size. Malta has a history of control by colonial powers and this is reflected in the ethnic background of its population, which comprises Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, English, Spanish and Italians. Occupied at various periods by the Thoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Knights of St. John and the French, Malta became a crown colony of Britain in 1814. During the Second World War, the islands played a crucial role for the Allies, and the bravery shown by the people prompted King George VI to award the entire colony the George Cross, Britain's highest honour for valour. The nation achieved full independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. This revised bibliography fully updates the first edition, published in 1985, and pays particular attention to Malta's chequered history and strategic position.
Book Synopsis Colonialism [3 volumes] by : Melvin E. Page
Download or read book Colonialism [3 volumes] written by Melvin E. Page and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-09-16 with total page 1233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most exhaustive reference work available on this critical subject in world history, focusing on the politics, economy, culture, and society of both colonizers and colonized. "The history of the last 500 years is the history of imperialism," writes editor Melvin Page. In the Americas, as a result of imperialist conquest, disease, famine, and war nearly wiped out a population estimated in the tens of millions. Africa was devastated by the slave trade, an integral part of imperialism from the 1400s to the 1800s. In Asia, even though native populations survived, native political institutions were destroyed. Imperialism also forged the two most important ideologies of the last five centuries—racialism and modern nationalism. In more than 600 essays presented in this three-volume encyclopedia, Page and other leading scholars—historians, political scientists, economists, and sociologists—analyze the origins of imperialism, the many forms it took, and its impact worldwide. They also explore imperialism's bitter legacy: the gross inequities of global wealth and power that divide the former conquerors—primarily Europe, the United States, and Japan—from the people they conquered.

Book Synopsis Citizens and Subjects of the Italian Colonies by : Simona Berhe
Download or read book Citizens and Subjects of the Italian Colonies written by Simona Berhe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on Italian colonialism that specifically deals with the question of citizenship/subjecthood. Such a topic is crucial for understanding both Italian imperial rule and the complex dynamics of the different colonial societies where several actors, like notables, political leaders, minorities, etc., were involved. The chapters gathered in the book constitute an unprecedented account of a heterogeneous geographical area. The cases of Eritrea, Libya, Dodecanese, Ethiopia, and Albania confirm that citizenship and subjecthood in the colonial context were ductile political tools, which were structured according to the orientations of the Metropole and the challenges that came from the colonial societies, often swinging between submission, cooptation to the colonial power, and resistance. On one hand, the book offers an account of the different policies of citizenship implemented in the Italian colonies, in particular the construction of gradated forms of citizenship, the repression and expulsion of dissidents, the systems of endearment of local people and cooptation of the elites, and the racialization of legal status. On the other, it deals with the various answers coming from the local populations in terms of resistance, negotiation, and construction of social identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can the history of a nation's football reveal about that nation's wider political and socio-cultural identity? How can the study of local football culture help us to understand the powerful international forces at play within the modern game? Based on long-term and detailed ethnographic research, this book uses Malta as a critical case study to explore the dynamics of contemporary football. This book examines Maltese football in the context of the island's unique politics, culture and national identity, shedding light upon both Maltese society and on broader processes, both local and global, within the international game. The book explores a range of key issues in contemporary football, such as: the dynamics of international player migration football corruption and ethics the politics of sponsorship and TV deals the global appeal of footballing "brands" such as Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich. This book is essential reading for students and researchers working in Sports Studies, Sociology of Sport, Football, Globalisation, Politics and Ethnic Studies.
