It is not a list of the 101 'best' whiskies in the world in the opinion of a self-appointed whisky guru. It is simply a guide to the 101 whiskies that enthusiasts must seek out and try in order to complete their whisky education. Avoiding the deliberately obscure, the ridiculously limited and the absurdly expensive, whisky expert Ian Buxton recommends an eclectic selection of old favourites, stellar newcomers and mystifyingly unknown drams that simply have to be drunk. The book decodes the marketing hype and gets straight to the point; whether from India, America, Sweden, Ireland, Japan or the hills, glens and islands of Scotland, here are the 101 whiskies that you really want. Try them before you die - Slainte!

Book excerpt: Thanks to industry guru Jim Murray and his internationally acclaimed annual Whiskey Bible, the Japanese are now running out of their own single malt and people have fought in Toronto liquor stores to grab the last bottle of his World Whisky of the Year. Rye, Irish Pot Still, and Bourbon have all seen a massive resurgence in recent years not least thanks to the visionary campaigning of the world's first-ever full time professional whisky writer. Murray has tasted nearly 20,000 different whiskies for the Whiskey Bible since it first hit the shelves in 2003. For this 2021 edition, he reflects on over another 1,200. The 4,700 whiskies included in this 2021 edition range from Scottish Single malts to Australian; from Canadian to Austrian. The whiskies from over 30 different countries are included and evaluated in his forthright, honest, amusing, fiercely independent, and non-pretentious style.

Book excerpt: In 1885, Alfred Barnard was charged with the task of visiting and reporting on every active Whisky distillery throughout Scotland, Ireland and England. It took him two exhaustive years. In this book you will see the distilleries through his eyes. His detailed descriptions of every step in the distilling process is work that remains unparalleled to this day. But that's only part of the story. As he and his companions traveled the countryside, he fell in love with Scotland and all its grandeur as well as the lush landscapes of Ireland. As you read through this book - presented as an ebook for the very first time - you'll fall in love, as well. Part technical document and part travelogue, you're almost getting two books in one intertwined volume. Granted, this text lacks the visual beauty and splendor of the fine print editions, but the words stand up on their own and will transport you to a Victorian adventure that was, is and always will be one of a kind. This edition does not contain the additional writings of Alfred Barnard that are found in recent print editions, just the text of his original book. There are two additional chapters from his writings giving added detail for Glenglassaugh and Glenfarclas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expands anthropological studies of business enterprise to include comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. A number of books on business anthropology have been published, but most of them are written by anthropologists alone. By contrast, this book engages interdisciplinary studies, e.g., not only by anthropologists but also management scholars and other social scientists. It is the second volume of studies forwarding anthropological approaches to business administration, Keiei Jinruigaku. This volume focusses on the cultural dimensions of enterprise. Here enterprise is viewed as a medium carrying culture, rather than solely an entity of production and management, as is typical in mainstream studies. The approach is based on Tadao Umesao’s definition of culture as a projection of instruments/devices and institutions into the mental/spiritual dimensions of life. Therefore, in our view production and management are among the projections of the cultural aspects of enterprise. This perspective, we believe, constitutes a new frontier in the study of business administration. This book consists of three parts, the first being “religiosity and spirituality”, the second “exhibitions, performance and inducement,” and the third “history and story.” In Part I, Quaker Codes, ex-votos, and spiritual leadership are discussed in relation to management and behavior, and miracles and pilgrimage. Part II describes exhibitions justifying nuclear power industry within power plants in both Japan and England, the exhibition by English families of their porcelain collections, and the performance skills of orchestral maestros. All of these examples indicate that, through the use of narratives and myths, exhibits and performances overtly and covertly induce visitors or audiences to certain viewpoints and emotions. Part III offers examples of histories and stories of enterprise articulated through the branding and consumption of industrial products, and their display in enterprise museums where the essence of culture and heritage is cherished and emphasized, by and for the wider community and the enterprise itself. Conjoined as an interdisciplinary team of Western and Japanese researchers, we apply an anthropological approach to the cultural history of enterprise in both Britain and Japan.

Book excerpt: A wide-ranging and evocative portrait of Scotland's distilleries, with text by renowned whisky expert Charles MacLean and photographs by Lara Platman and Alan MacDonald. Treating Scotland as eight distinct regions, this fascinating book describes the 'cultural terroir' of the country's fifty greatest distilleries; the ingredients, practices and traditions that result in such an exquisite range of whiskies. Specially commissioned photographs capture the texture of the surrounding landscapes and communities through the changing seasons, as well as portraits of those craftsmen who work there, and the fabric of the buildings themselves. Spirit of Place is a unique addition to the literature on Scotch whisky, from the world's greatest expert on the subject. The perfect gift for anyone planning a tour of Scotland's distilleries, a souvenir for anyone who has visited them, and simply the perfect companion to a dram at home.
