This book is devoted to those human beliefs that fall in the "gray zone" between science, religion, and everyday life-call them superstitious, supernatural, magical, or just wrong. In an often incomprehensible world where lightning or plague could end life quickly or drought could condemn a poor family to agonizing death, superstitious beliefs gave people a feeling of understanding or even control. They have continued to shape societies and cultures ever since. This book covers a range of superstitious, supernatural, and otherwise unusual beliefs from the ancient world to the early 19th century. More than 100 entries explain beliefs, discuss historical evidence, and explain how each belief differs across cultures. This book is a perfect gateway for anyone curious about superstitious and magical beliefs, with topics ranging from the everyday, such as dogs and iron, to legendary figures, such as Hermes Trismegistus and the Yellow Emperor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is good. Your house is swept and put in order. Then you hear a noise outside. You pull the curtain away, peering out the window to see an enticing figure grinning at you. You pull the door open, admiring its scent in your nose, appreciating its voice with your ears. You reach out to stroke the silken fabric it wears, only to caress the roughened hide of a scabrous beast. Gideon Prossiden is a good cop. At least, he thinks he is. But after being assigned a cold case that goes nowhere, and being compelled to fight off impending lunacy from an onslaught of absurd hallucinations, he begins to question his good cop status. Now he's tangled up in a keen desire for the coroner's secretary, and with an equally intense guilt for his less than gentlemanly daydreams about her. But she holds the resolution to his cold case, and he must somehow suppress the lechery in his mind while hiding from his anger about her persistent talk of religion and that "God stuff." It looks like an angel, white robes gleaming with an inner fire. How can it feel so monstrous? Now the thing at the door snarls, hissing, and your mind is roiling with immoral thoughts, lustful thoughts, while sickening scenes of blood and mayhem spatter the carnal circus. But there is hope. There is one who stands at the door and knocks, whose brilliantly white robe is not a guise. The crux is, how can you tell the difference between them? Gideon Prossiden stands on that crux, and a pretty, blonde warrior stands beside him, desperately fighting to help him see the truth. Will he fall, and take her with him? Or will his sleeping soul awaken to journey with her on the path to paradise? The battle for their minds started before time began. Who, or what, will prove to be the victor?

Book Synopsis Faulkner's Artistic Vision by : Ryūichi Yamaguchi
Download or read book Faulkner's Artistic Vision written by Ryūichi Yamaguchi and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although William Faulkner's imagination is often considered solely tragic, it actually blended what Faulkner himself called the bizarre and the terrible. Not only did Faulkner's vision encompass both comedy and tragedy; it perceived a latent humor in tragedy and vice versa. As a result, Faulkner's fiction is seldom simply comic or simply tragic. Faulkner's comedy incorporates tragedy and despair, and the humor in his novels may serve as well to intensify as to relieve a tragic or horrific effect. This study examines Faulkner's first nine novels, from Soldiers' Pay to Absalom, Absalom!, showing how humor is used to express theme: how it appears in the action, characters, and discourse of each novel; and how it contributes to the overall effect of each novel. In each case, even in the most pained and angry novels, Faulkner's practice of humor expresses his view that humor is an inseparable element of human experience. Ryuichi Yamaguchi is Professor of English and American literature at the Aichi University in Japan.

Book Synopsis Enochian Vision Magick by : Lon Milo DuQuette
Download or read book Enochian Vision Magick written by Lon Milo DuQuette and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The greatest guide ever written—by our greatest living teacher of magick—to the greatest occult system on Earth.” —from the forward by Jason Louv, author of John Dee and the Empire of Angels Having mastered the arts and sciences of his age, Elizabethan magus Dr. John Dee (1527–1608) resolved that worldly knowledge could no longer provide him the wisdom he desired, and as did so many other learned men of the day, he turned his attention to magick. In 1582 he and his clairvoyant partner Edward Kelley made magical contact with a number of spiritual entities who identified themselves as angels—the same that communicated with Enoch and the patriarchs of the Old Testament. Over the next 3 years they revealed to Dee and Kelley three distinct magical systems of vision magick. The third and last of these incorporated a series of “calls” to be recited in an angelic language in order to raise the consciousness of the magician to a level where angelic contact is possible. In Enochian Vision Magick, Lon Milo DuQuette introduces the origins of Enochian magick and offers the expert and novice alike the opportunity not only to see the big picture of the full system but also the practical means by which he or she can become attuned in the same step-by-step manner that first prepared Dee and Kelley. First published by Weiser in 2008, this new edition includes a new introduction and new back matter by the author as well as a new foreword by Jason Louv.
