Case studies are provided alongside reviews from academic and industry perspectives, discussing economics and lifecycle assessments (LCA) of biofuel production, as well as analyses of supply chains. Offering a comprehensive and timely overview, this book provides an ideal reference for researchers and practitioners working in bioenergy and renewable energy, but it will also be of interest to chemists, bioengineers, chemical engineers, and the agricultural and petrochemical industries. - Helps readers gain academic and industry perspectives on biofuel production with the inclusion of lab-based experimentation and informative case studies - Contains an exhaustive analysis of biomass conversion technologies for biofuels and biochemicals - Provides a clear and concise text that avoids the overuse of jargon and technical language
Book Synopsis Human Activities and the Tropical Rainforest by : Bernard K. Maloney
Download or read book Human Activities and the Tropical Rainforest written by Bernard K. Maloney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arising initially from a conference, the papers published here have been integrated into book form to provide information on human activities and the tropical rainforest in the past and present, and on the possible future of the rainforest, in a unique way. Other books have considered some, but not all, of these themes; however, none has stressed the continuity of change over time and its possible outcome for the people of the forest as well as for the forest itself. Because of the approach taken, this book should appeal across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Indeed a prime aim has been to suggest that rainforest, because of its complexity and the complexity of people-rainforest relationships throughout time, deserves study from a broad perspective. This book poses more questions than answers about the rainforest and it is hoped that it will encourage readers to think about the rainforest in a wider way than hitherto. This book is aimed at geographers (physical and human), social anthropologists, archaeologists, pedologists, foresters and tropical botanists and will be of value to graduates of various disciplines setting out to research the rainforest.
Download or read book The Gibbons written by Susan Lappan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a great honor to be asked to introduce this exciting new volume, having been heavily involved in the first comprehensive synthesis in the early 1980s. Gibbons are the most enthralling of primates. On the one hand, they are the most appealing animals, with their upright posture and body shape, facial markings, dramatic arm-swinging locomotion and suspensory postures, and devastating duets; on the other hand, the small apes are the most diverse, hence biologically valuable and informative, of our closest relatives. It is hard for me to believe that it is 40 years to the month since I first set foot on the Malay Peninsula to start my doctoral study of the siamang. I am very proud to have followed in the footsteps of the great pioneer of primate field study, Clarence Ray Carpenter (CR or Ray, who I was fortunate to meet twice, in Pennsylvania and in Zurich), first in Central America (in 1967) and then in Southeast Asia. It is 75 years since he studied howler monkeys on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal Zone. It is 70 years since he studied the white-handed gibbon in Thailand.
Book Synopsis Key Environments: Malaysia by : Earl of Cranbrook
Download or read book Key Environments: Malaysia written by Earl of Cranbrook and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the vast area of structurally similar vegetation that forms the Far Eastern tropical rain forest block, only the forests of peninsular Malaysia lie on the mainland of Asia. Although showing some influence from this source, the flora and fauna are distinctive and exceedingly rich in species. Among other factors, this richness reflects the complex structure of the vegetation, justly famous for the extensive stands of tall trees that create the conditions to which many smaller plants, fungi and a huge variety of animals are adapted. After a century of scientific investigation, it is now possible to understand peninsular Malaysia's complex ecosystem as an essential prerequisite to the successful management for conservation and long-term productivity in the area. Compiled by authors with personal experience of the region, this book constitutes the most authoritative account of this diverse and fragile region. It is essential reading for all those interested in Malaysia and its conservation.

Book excerpt: 971 references on wild foods in agricultural systems are selected with the intention to provide an indication of the range of research carried out on this subject, highlighting key themes of policy interest. The bibliography is organised into a number of different thematic sessions. Each session starts with an introduction with references to major issues in the literature and areas where questions remain unanswered. Each reference is provided with an abstract. Three indices are given: a regional index, an ethnic groups index and a thematic index
Book Synopsis Multiple Biological Activities of Unconventional Seed Oils by : Abdalbasit Adam Mariod
Download or read book Multiple Biological Activities of Unconventional Seed Oils written by Abdalbasit Adam Mariod and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Biological Activities of Unconventional Seed Oils brings detailed knowledge concerning the biological properties of oils (antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, etc.), the content of individual substances with health-promoting properties, methods for biological properties assay, the influence of raw material quality and technological processes on the quality of oils, and possible raw materials and oil contaminants with adverse health effects. The book's chapters also highlight the unique properties of new oils, along with their biological activities. Less than a decade ago, the vegetable oils on grocery store shelves were derived from conventional oil seeds e.g., cotton, groundnut, sesame, corn sunflower and soybean. However, as consumers began to understand how fat intake affects overall health, researchers, plant growers and food manufacturers started to produce oils from unconventional sources. This book highlights what we've learned in the process. - Explores unconventional oils, their different sources, and where they grow worldwide - Explains the medicinal uses of unconventional oils - Details the biological activities, antioxidant and physico-chemical composition of unconventional oils
Book Synopsis Mediterranean Fruits Bio-wastes by : Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan
Download or read book Mediterranean Fruits Bio-wastes written by Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Mediterranean fruits (i.e., be grapes, oranges, apples, pears, peaches, cherries, plums, figs, melons, watermelon and dates) are of major commercial and nutritional value to the region. Processing of such fruits, however, results in large amounts of bio-waste material. Efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly use of fruit industry waste is thus highly cost-effective and minimizes environmental impact. The natural antioxidants and bioactive compounds found in Mediterranean fruit bio-wastes could play a major role in the alleged health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, and could be used in pharmaceuticals as well as novel food applications. This book presents a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on the chemistry, functional properties and health-promoting effects of bioactive compounds in Mediterranean fruit bio-wastes, as well as novel food and non-food applications. The text provides the scientific fundamentals of the health-promoting benefits and applications of Mediterranean fruit bio-wastes, reviews the relevant recovery issues and explores different techniques to develop new applications. With a diversity of perspectives, from food science to environmental chemistry and horticultural research, this volume provides comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge to researchers and industry professionals working in the areas of food waste valorization.
