Book Synopsis The Other Kuala Lumpur by : Yeoh Seng Guan
Download or read book The Other Kuala Lumpur written by Yeoh Seng Guan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuala Lumpur, like many Southeast Asian cities, has changed very significantly in the last two or three decades – expanding its size, and 'modernising' and 'globalising' its built environment. For many people these changes represent 'progress' and 'development'. This book, however, focuses on the more marginalised residents of Kuala Lumpur. Among others, it considers street hawkers and vendors, refugees, the urban poor, religious minorities and a sexuality rights group, and explores how their everyday lives have been adversely affected by these recent changes. The book shows how urban renewal, the law and ethno-religious nationalism can work against these groups in wanting to live and work in the capital city of Malaysia.

Book Synopsis Political Reform in Indonesia After Soeharto by : Harold A. Crouch
Download or read book Political Reform in Indonesia After Soeharto written by Harold A. Crouch and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2010 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades of authoritarian rule in Indonesia came to a sudden end in 1998. The collapse of the Soeharto regime was accompanied by massive economic decline, widespread rioting, communal conflict, and fears that the nation was approaching the brink of disintegration. Although the fall of Soeharto opened the way towards democratization, conditions were by no means propitious for political reform. This book asks how political reform could proceed despite such unpromising circumstances. It examines electoral and constitutional reform, the decentralization of a highly centralized regime, the gradual but incomplete withdrawal of the military from its deep political involvement, the launching of an anti-corruption campaign, and the achievement of peace in two provinces that had been devastated by communal violence and regional rebellion.

Book Synopsis Borderscapes by : Prem Kumar Rajaram
Download or read book Borderscapes written by Prem Kumar Rajaram and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting critical issues of state sovereignty with empirical concerns, Borderscapes interrogates the limits of political space. The essays in this volume analyze everyday procedures, such as the classifying of migrants and refugees, security in European and American detention centers, and the DNA sampling of migrants in Thailand, showing the border as a moral construct rich with panic, danger, and patriotism. Conceptualizing such places as immigration detention camps and refugee camps as areas of political contestation, this work forcefully argues that borders and migration are, ultimately, inextricable from questions of justice and its limits. Book Synopsis The Protection of Refugees in Southeast Asia by : Sébastien Moretti
Download or read book The Protection of Refugees in Southeast Asia written by Sébastien Moretti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and detailed analysis of refugee protection in Southeast Asia from an international law perspective. It examines both the legal and policy frameworks pertaining to the protection of refugees in the region as well as the countries’ response to refugee movements from the Indochinese refugee crisis in the mid-1970s to the most recent developments. It covers important aspects of refugee protection, such as access to territory, non-refoulement, the treatment of refugees, the concept of refugee as applied in the region, burden-sharing and durable solutions to the plight of refugees. The analysis focuses specifically on the main countries of asylum within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that are not parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Using an international law perspective based on the doctrine of the ‘two elements’ (practice and opinio juris), the author argues that these states have long recognized that people fleeing persecution, armed conflict and generalized violence, namely refugees, should be protected. This in turn demonstrates that they recognize the existence and relevance of the international refugee regime despite their refusal to accede to the Refugee Convention. Offering a different perspective on the links between international refugee law and refugee protection in Southeast Asia, this book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of international relations, international refugee law, international human rights law, migration governance and Southeast Asian Studies.
