Book Synopsis The Sounds of Language by : Henry Rogers
Download or read book The Sounds of Language written by Henry Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonetics is the scientific study of sounds used in language- how the sounds are produced, how they are transferred from the speaker to the hearer and how they are heard and perceived. The Sounds of Language provides an accessible, general introduction to phonetics with a special emphasis on English. Focusing on the phonetics of English, the first section allows students to get an overall view of the subject. Two standard accents of English are presented- RP (Received Pronunciation), the standard accent of England, and GA (General American), the standard accent throughout much of North America. The discussion is arranged so that students can read only the RP or GA portions, if desired. Sixteen additional accents of English spoken around the world are also covered to provide students with wider international coverage. The author then moves on to introduce acoustics phonetics in an accessible manner for those without a science background. The last section of the book provides a detailed discussion of all aspects of speech with extensive examples from languages around the world. Containing student-friendly features such as extensive exercises for practising the sounds covered in each chapter; a glossary of technical terms; instructions on how to write phonetic symbols; the latest International Phonetic Alphabet chart and a detailed list of English consonantal variants, The Sounds of Language provides an excellent introduction to phonetics to students of linguistics and speech pathology and students of English as a second language.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Literacy in Akshara Orthography by : R. Malatesha Joshi
Download or read book Handbook of Literacy in Akshara Orthography written by R. Malatesha Joshi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the unique characteristics of akshara orthography and how they may affect literacy development and problems along with the implications for assessment and instruction. Even though akshara orthography is used by more than a billion people, there is an urgent need for a systematic attempt to bring the features, research findings, and future directions of akshara together in a coherent volume. We hope that this volume will bridge that gap. Akshara is used in several Indic languages, each calling it by a slightly different name, for example 'aksharamu', in Telugu, 'akshara' in Kannada, and 'akshar' in Hindi. It is the Bhrami-derived orthography used across much of the Indian subcontinent. There is a growing body of research on the psycholinguistic underpinnings of learning to read akshara, and the emerging perspective is that akshara, even though classified as alphasyllabaries, abugida, and semi-syllabic writing systems, is neither alphabetic nor syllabic. Rather, akshara orthography is unique and deserves to be a separate classification and needs further investigation relating to literacy acquisition in akshara. The chapters in this volume, written by leading authors in the field, will inform the reader of the current research on akshara in a coherent and systematic way.

This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With nearly a quarter of the world’s population, members of at least five major language families plus several putative language isolates, South Asia is a fascinating arena for linguistic investigations, whether comparative-historical linguistics, studies of language contact and multilingualism, or general linguistic theory. This volume provides a state-of-the-art survey of linguistic research on the languages of South Asia, with contributions by well-known experts. Focus is both on what has been accomplished so far and on what remains unresolved or controversial and hence offers challenges for future research. In addition to covering the languages, their histories, and their genetic classification, as well as phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, and sociolinguistics, the volume provides special coverage of contact and convergence, indigenous South Asian grammatical traditions, applications of modern technology to South Asian languages, and South Asian writing systems. An appendix offers a classified listing of major sources and resources, both digital/online and printed.

Book Synopsis The Kathakali Explorer by : TREMBLAY Richard
Download or read book The Kathakali Explorer written by TREMBLAY Richard and published by The Kerala Kalamandalam University Press - Diffusion Les Éditions SILENTCULTURE. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kathakali Explorer is about the work and life of two ethnologists who traveled extensively in the colonial India and documented various aspects of the Indian arts, languages and the South-Indian literature, and the people’s way of life. They authored the first monograph ever written on the Kathakali dance theater of Kerala following a whole-night performance they attended in Kottayam (Kerala) on January 14, 1916. This document is translated in the book with an introduction and annotations, followed by a travelogue kept by the two researchers about their life and work in India, the people they befriended on their tireless journey all the way from South India to Kashmir. About the publication of the monograph by A. Merwart in 1926 It (the monograph) reveals the outstanding fact that ethno-choreography came into being even before 1933, the publication date of Curt Sachs’ ‘Weltgeschlchte des Tanzes.’ The author (Merwart) describes the Kathakali dance drama in detail… He relates the drama to the culture in an authoritative manner. KURATH Gertrude P. (1963). Ethnomusicology 7(2): 141 – 142. The monograph assuredly stands out as a landmark in the entire range of substantive literature on Kathakali. KHOKAR M. (1997). Sruti (148, Jan.1997): 19 – 22.
Book Synopsis Phonetically Based Phonology by : Bruce Hayes
Download or read book Phonetically Based Phonology written by Bruce Hayes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonetically Based Phonology is centred around the hypothesis that phonologies of languages are determined by phonetic principles; that is, phonetic patterns involving ease of articulation and perception are expressed linguistically as grammatical constraints. This book brings together a team of scholars to provide a wide-ranging study of phonetically based phonology. It investigates the role of phonetics in many phonological phenomena - such as assimilation, vowel reduction, vowel harmony, syllable weight, contour line distribution, metathesis, lenition, sonority sequencing, and the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) - exploring in particular the phonetic bases of phonological markedness in these key areas. The analyses also illustrate several analytical strategies whereby phonological sound patterns can be related to their phonological underpinnings. Each chapter includes a tutorial discussion of the phonetics on which the phonological discussion is based. Diverse and comprehensive in its coverage, Phonetically Based Phonology will be welcomed by all linguists interested in the relationship between phonetics and phonological theory.
