Book Synopsis Power, Gender and Social Change in Africa by : Raj Bardouille
Download or read book Power, Gender and Social Change in Africa written by Raj Bardouille and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender plays a hugely significant and too often under-considered role in predicting how accessible resources such as education, wage-based employment, physical and mental health care, adequate nutrition and housing will be to an individual or community. According to a 2001 World Bank report titled Engendering Development—Through Gender Equality in Rights, Resources, and Voice, enormous disparities exist between men and women in terms of basic rights and the power to determine the future, both in Africa and around the globe. A better understanding of the links between gender, public policy and development outcomes would allow for more effective policy formulation and implementation at many levels. This book, through its discussion of the challenges, achievements and lessons learned in efforts to attain gender equality, sheds light on these important issues. The book contains chapters from an interdisciplinary group of scholars, including sociologists, economists, political scientists, scholars of law, anthropologists, historians and others. The work includes analysis of strategic gender initiatives, case studies, research, and policies as well as conceptual and theoretical pieces. With its format of ideas, resources and recorded experiences as well as theoretical models and best practices, the book is an important contribution to academic and political discourse on the intricate links between gender, power, and social change in Africa and around the world.

This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intersectionality and Women's Access to Justice, edited by J. Jarpa Dawuni, propounds layered intersectionality as a paradigm for examining how gendered factors affect women's access to justice, whether as judges or litigants. Through intersectional and decolonial frameworks, the contributors analyze the lived experiences of women and their access to justice by situating the courtroom as both a spatial and a temporal arena for seeking justice (as litigants) and for seeking access to the bench (as judges). This book examines patterns of mutually reinforcing discriminatory practices that women share based on common gender identities and depending on which identities are at play at a given point in time in both traditional and statutory courts. The book provides recommendations for various justice sector providers.

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 2012 report recognized that expanding women's agency - their ability to make decisions and take advantage of opportunities is key to improving their lives as well as the world. This report represents a major advance in global knowledge on this critical front. The vast data and thousands of surveys distilled in this report cast important light on the nature of constraints women and girls continue to face globally. This report identifies promising opportunities and entry points for lasting transformation, such as interventions that reach across sectors and include life-skills training, sexual and reproductive health education, conditional cash transfers, and mentoring. It finds that addressing what the World Health Organization has identified as an epidemic of violence against women means sharply scaling up engagement with men and boys. The report also underlines the vital role information and communication technologies can play in amplifying women's voices, expanding their economic and learning opportunities, and broadening their views and aspirations. The World Bank Group's twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity demand no less than the full and equal participation of women and men, girls and boys, around the world." -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book Women in Malawi written by Seodi Venekai-Rudo White and published by Southern African Research and Documentation Centre. This book was released on 2005 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malawi chapter of this series profiles the status of women in Malawi from 1997 to 2004 and records the extent to which practical and adequate steps are being taken to address gender concerns in all development sectors. It examines how Malawi is fulfilling its commitments under the Beijing framework, the SADC declaration on gender and development and to meet the targets of the Millennium Development Goals adopted in 2000. It considers to what extent the dimension of gender is being mainstreamed into every aspect of human life, examining all contexts within which women operate: social, economic, legal and political. The study is divided into three parts: the first giving background and historical context from a gendered perspective on matters as macro- economic structure, politics and decision-making, laws and legal reform, education and technology, culture, heath, media and corruption. The second part analyses the gendered impact of various policies and programmes introduced in Malawi between 1998 and 2004. The final part presents recommendations on how existing gaps in Malawi can be filled and the gender agenda taken forward.

By the 2013 Heads of State summit, 13 countries had signed and 12 countries had ratified the SADC Gender Protocol. The Protocol is now in force. With two years to go, time is ticking to 2015, when governments need to have achieved 28 targets for the attainment of gender equality. In keeping with the Alliance slogan: "Yes we must", this 2013 Barometer provides a wealth of updated data against which progress will be measured by all those who cherish democracy in the region.
