Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activities in Algebra is a set of versatile enrichment exercises that covers a very broad range of mathematical topics and applications-from the Moebius strip to the googol. Several criteria have been used in developing the activities and in selecting the topics that are included. All of them bear heavily, and equally, on our concerns for curriculum goals and classroom management. Each activity is presented as a reproducible student investigation. It is followed by guidelines and notes for the teacher. Each activity is keyed to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards, Revised. This link to the NCTM standards allows teachers to facilitate linking classroom activities to specific state and school district content standards. First and foremost, the activities are meant to be motivational. As much as possible, we want this book to achieve the goal of being attractive to people who thought they didn't like mathematics. To accomplish this, it is necessary for the activities to be quite different from what students encounter in their basal texts-different in both substance and form. This seems especially critical; no matter how excellent a basal text is being used, nearly every class experiences the "blahs." Unfortunately, this sort of boredom is often well entrenched long before the teacher and perhaps even the students are aware of it. Presenting activities on a regular basis gives the variety and change of pace needed to sustain interest in any subject.

Using case material as illustrations, the volume explains that interest can be supported to develop, and that the development of a person's interest is always motivating and results in meaningful engagement. This volume is written for people who would like to know more about the power of their interests and how they could develop them: students who want to be engaged, educators and parents wondering about how to facilitate motivation, business people focusing on ways in which they could engage their employees and associates, policy-makers whose recognition of the power of interest may lead to changes resulting in a new focus supporting interest development for schools, out of school activity, industry, and business, and researchers studying learning and motivation. It draws on research in cognitive, developmental, educational, and social psychology, as well as in the learning sciences, and neuroscience to demonstrate that there is power for everyone in leveraging interest for motivation and engagement.

Book excerpt: In this book the author provides examples and recommends highly effective and practical instructional and assessment strategies that classroom teachers can immediately implement and that school administrators can readily observe. These high yield strategies build on accepted practices and directly address the needs of struggling students. His approach assists classroom teachers in organizing their instruction by connecting preparation and instruction to student notes, homework, test preparation, and assessments so students study more effectively. This results in increased student performance. He also emphasizes the importance of student-teacher relationships and the implementing a success-on-success model. His emphasis on making students more comfortable in their knowledge, understanding, and application of math is demonstrated repeatedly with examples of how to introduce new concepts and skills by linking them to previously learned math and outside experiences. These linkages allow teachers another opportunity to review and reinforce skills or address student deficiencies. -- Publisher's description.

Achieve higher levels of creativity, clearer organization of thoughts, increased concentration, better communications, and dramatically improved memory and creativity. Read more rapidly and with greater retention. Learn principles and techniques used by great minds in the business, sports, and creative worlds. This book will show you how to apply these principles for success. With this knowledge, you will be able to achieve just about anything you want and do it progressively better as you mature!
