Book Synopsis Accelerating Transportation Project and Program Delivery by : Dennis Keck
Download or read book Accelerating Transportation Project and Program Delivery written by Dennis Keck and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NCHRP Report 662 describes how selected transportation agencies have reduced the time required to complete the project delivery process. This process takes new or renewed transportation facilities and services from conception to completion, ready for users. Project delivery is a primary indicator of an agency's effectiveness. Individual highway and other transportation projects are developed under programs intended to implement agency and legislative initiatives and other public policy. The way programs are organized and managed can determine the speed and efficiency of project development. Accelerating program functions can speed up project delivery. This report describes the experiences of eight state departments of transportation (DOTs) that made improvements in their project delivery and the lessons to be learned from their experiences. The information will be useful to DOT managers seeking to ensure that their agencies' organization, policies, and program operations facilitate project delivery.

Book Synopsis Access Management Manual by : Kristine Williams
Download or read book Access Management Manual written by Kristine Williams and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the publication of the first edition of the Access Management Manual, the context for transportation planning and roadway design in the United States has been transformed. Transportation agencies and local governments are under growing pressure to integrate land use and transportation policy and achieve a more sustainable, energy-efficient transportation system. This second edition of the manual responds to these developments by addressing access management comprehensively, as a critical part of network and land use planning. The content is interdisciplinary, with guidance pertinent to various levels of government as well as to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorized vehicles, including trucks and buses, and is strongly grounded in decades of research, engineering science, and professional experience. Greater emphasis is placed on appropriate location of access, and guidance is refined to provide appropriate consideration of context and community issues. Substantial updates aid state and local agencies in managing access to corridor development effectively. Specific guidance on network and circulation planning and modal considerations is included, as well as guidance on effective site access and circulation design. A chapter on corridor management reinforces these concepts with a framework for application of access management in different contexts, along with appropriate strategies for each context. There are also new chapters on network planning, regional access management policies and programs, interchange area access management, auxiliary lane warrants and design, and right-of-way and access control. The manual concludes with an extensive menu of access management techniques and information on their application"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Brunswick and Topsham by : Joyce K. Bibber
Download or read book Brunswick and Topsham written by Joyce K. Bibber and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1994-12-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our picture of the past and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a sense of history. Both joined and separated by the Androscoggin River, Brunswick and Topsham were carved from the same land grant in 1715. Despite their proximity, the towns developed separate identities: Brunswick became a manufacturing, commercial, and educational center, while Topsham combined its farms with factories. This fascinating pictorial history illuminates the daily lives of the residents of the two towns, and reveals how life has changed over the past 120 years.

Book Synopsis Measurement of Frost Heave Forces on H-piles and Pipe Piles by : Jerome B. Johnson
Download or read book Measurement of Frost Heave Forces on H-piles and Pipe Piles written by Jerome B. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnitude and variation of forces and shear stresses, caused by frost heaving in Fairbanks silt and the adfreeze effects of a surface ice layer and a gravel layer, were determined as a function of depth by using electric strain gauges along the upper 2.75 m of a pop pile, 30.5-cm I.D. x 0.95-cm wall, and an H-pile, 25.4-cm web x 85 kg/lineal m. The peak frost heaving forces on the H-pile for three consecutive winter seasons (1982-1985) were 752,790 and 802 kN, respectively. Peak frost heaving forces on the pipe pile of 1118 and 1115 kN were determined only for the second and third winter seasons. Maximum average shear stresses acting on the H-pile were 256,348 and 308 kPa during the three winter seasons. Maximum average shear stresses acting on the pipe pile were 627 and 972 kPa for the second and third winter seasons. Ice collars were placed around the tops of both piles during the first and third winter seasons to measure the adfreeze effects of a surface ice layer. The ice layer may have contributed 15 to 20% of the peak forces measured on the piles. A 0.6-m-thick gravel layer replaced the soil around the tops of both piles for the second and third winter seasons to measure the adfreeze effects of a gravel backfill. The gravel layer on the H-pile may have contributed about 35% of the peak forces measured. Maximum heaving forces and shear stresses occurred during periods of maximum cold and soil surface heave magnitude. These were not related to the depth of frost penetration for most of the winter since forst was present at all depths extending to the permafrost table. (mjm).
