Book Synopsis Cemetery Inscriptions and Revolutionary, War of 1812, and Civil War Veterans of Bowdoin, Maine by : Charlene B. Bartlett
Download or read book Cemetery Inscriptions and Revolutionary, War of 1812, and Civil War Veterans of Bowdoin, Maine written by Charlene B. Bartlett and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settlers started moving into the area that is now Bowdoin in the 1750s. Bowdoin still has the earliest book of vital records, but all other vital records for the town were burned in 1872. For the next twenty years, vital records were apparently not kept, thus, these cemetery inscriptions are the most complete vital records available for Bowdoin. This collection is organized according to cemeteries and arranged in family plots. Extensive family history is included with each entry. Spouses, children, siblings, maiden names, death and birth dates are given when available. Over forty-five Bowdoin, Maine, cemeteries, plus burials in Potter Cemetery (once located in Bowdoin) are included. Some of the names and ages in this work were verified though the 1850 census for Bowdoin. Another helpful source was the Bowdoin Selectmen's Records, which give the veteran's name, service records, birth and death dates, and next of kin. Much of the information contained within this work is already lost due to illegible stones or missing markers. Epitaphs have been included if they were unusual of especially poignant.

S. Heath Post, No. 14, Department of Maine, G. A. R. By Brevet Brig. General Isaac Sparrow Bangs. Of all the magnificent pageants this country has ever seen, from its settlement to the present year, none in point of interest can compare to the grand review of the armies of the Union on May 23 and 24, 1865. The most causeless, cruel, bloody war in the world's history had just been brought to a triumphant close by the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia, under General Robert E. Lee, to General Grant, at Appomattox, April 9th, and the surrender of Johnston's and all confederate armies east of the Mississippi by the military convention of April 26th. The identical flag that was lowered from the flagstaff of Fort Sumter by Major Robert Anderson April 14, 1861, was floating over Fort Sumter again, having been raised by Brevet Major General Robert Anderson on the 14th of April, 1865 the fourth anniversary to commemorate in the most fitting manner the restoration of national authority on the spot where the great rebellion was first inaugurated. On the evening of that same day, President Lincoln had fallen a victim to the hate engendered by the war, by the bullet of John Wilkes Booth, at Ford's theatre in Washington. May 18th, by Special Orders No.239, war department, adjutant general's office, a grand review by General Grant, President Johnson and cabinet, was ordered of all the armies then near Washington; to take place May 23rd and 24th. Book Synopsis Togus, Down in Maine by : Timothy L. Smith
Download or read book Togus, Down in Maine written by Timothy L. Smith and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Togus, located 4.5 miles east of Augusta, Maine, was formerly part of the town of Chelsea. After the Civil War, Congress enacted laws and established a system of facilities that collectively became known as National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. The critical need to establish an eastern branch of the National Home led to the selection of the former Togus Spring Hotel, which after some remodeling, opened for Union Civil War veterans in November 1866. Gathered from cherished family albums, collectors of Togus artifacts, libraries, and archives, Togus, Down in Maine: The First National Veterans Home represents the first published history of the area, and most of the photographs have not been viewed by the public. The images of Civil War veterans are of particular interest, along with views of buildings, barracks, and hospitals from 1866 to the 1930s. From 1932 to 1960, over 60 buildings were demolished, and new buildings with reinforced concrete and brick facings were built.
