Book excerpt: From the days of the Holy Alliance onward, the spirit of systematic reaction brooded over the German countries-a reaction which dated from the Congress of Vienna, and had its centre in Austria. Its most typical representative, Metternich, a pupil of Talleyrand, a less adroit but far more mischievous man than his master, hoped to extend it to the whole of Europe. Everything that had been shaken, loosened, or overturned by the Revolution or by Napoleon was to be repaired and re-established. In the struggle with the great enemy they had been obliged at last to resort to every possible method, had been forced to appeal to the people instead of simply commanding, to appeal to their sentiment in place of their allegiance, and even to promise a thing as contrary to all cabinet policy, as youthfully revolutionary, as "the regeneration of Germany." There had been, it is true, a very noticeable difference between the Austrian and the Prussian watchwords. "Justice and Order," "Order and Peace," were the cues of the Austrian proclamations; those of the Prussian were "The Nation," "Freedom and Honour," "Germany." Still both of the great German States had made more concessions to the spirit of the times than at all suited the ideas of their leading statesmen. And no sooner was the enemy driven off, the heir of the Revolution crippled, and "the war of freedom" ended, than it became their object to put an end to the freedom as they had put an end to the war.

Book Synopsis New Literature in Chinese by : Zhu Shoutong
Download or read book New Literature in Chinese written by Zhu Shoutong and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically discusses the academic connotations of the concept of “Modern Chinese Literature”, as well as its basic categories. The discipline founded upon this concept is influential both in China and throughout the world, and scholars engaged in teaching and research in this field number around ten thousand. The discipline was originally established in haste in an abnormal academic environment, and, with the passage of time, such derivative disciplines as “Contemporary Chinese Literature”, “20th Century Chinese Literature”, “the Literature of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau” and “World Chinese Literature” have appeared. This book argues that these fields should be united in the area of “New Literature in Chinese”, because they have a shared language, culture and tradition. In today’s multi-polar world, where Chinese literature is so diversified, such an approach is obviously helpful.

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume 6, The Nineteenth Century, c.1830–1914 written by M. A. R. Habib and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, literary criticism first developed into an autonomous, professional discipline in the universities. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative study of the vast field of literary criticism between 1830 and 1914. In over thirty essays written from a broad range of perspectives, international scholars examine the growth of literary criticism as an institution, and the major critical developments in diverse national traditions and in different genres, as well as the major movements of Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism and Decadence. The History offers a detailed focus on some of the era's great critical figures, such as Sainte-Beuve, Hippolyte Taine and Matthew Arnold, and includes essays devoted to the connections of literary criticism with other disciplines in science, the arts and Biblical studies. The publication of this volume marks the completion of the monumental Cambridge History of Literary Criticism from antiquity to the present day.
Book Synopsis Geographies of Knowledge and Imagination in 19th Century Philological Research on Northern Europe by : Joachim Grage
Download or read book Geographies of Knowledge and Imagination in 19th Century Philological Research on Northern Europe written by Joachim Grage and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative philology was one of the most prolific fields of knowledge in the humanities during the 19th century. Based on the discovery of the Indo-European language family, it seemed to admit the reconstruction of a common history of European languages, and even mythologies, literatures, and people. However, it also represented a way to establish geographies of belonging and difference in the context of 19th century nation-building and identity politics. In spite of a widely acknowledged consensus about the principles and methods of comparative philology, the results depended on local conditions and practices. If Scandinavians were considered to be Germanic or not, for example, was up to identity politics that differed in Berlin, Strasbourg, Copenhagen and Paris. The contributors here elaborate these dynamics through analyses of the changing and conflicting versions of imaginative geographies that the actors of comparative philology evoked by using Scandinavian literatures and cultures. They also show how these seemingly delocalized scientific models depended on ever-different local needs and practices. Through this, the book represents the first distinctly transnational dynamic geography and history of the philological knowledge of the North – not only as a history of a scientific discourse, but also as a result of doing and performing scientific work.
