Orphelin, il fut élevé par son grand-père et son oncle. Quelques années plus tard, Il épousa une veuve qui lui donnera quatre filles. Sa mission de Prophète de l'islam débuta en 610, lorsqu'il eut la révélation du Coran pour la première fois dans les cavernes proches du mont Hira. C'est là qu'il reçoit la première des 114 révélations qui vont constituer le texte sacré des musulmans : le Coran. Trois ans plus tard, Mahomet commença à prêcher. Il attira quelques disciples, mais ses discours sur le Dieu unique n'étaient guère appréciés à La Mecque où la plupart des gens vénéraient des idoles et de nombreux dieux païens. Un voyage effectué en une nuit jusqu'à Jérusalem sur le dos d'une monture céleste (al-Buraq) et une ascension au ciel sont deux épisodes surnaturels qui interviennent avant que Muhammad et la communauté des premiers fidèles ne soient contraints, en 622, à s'exiler à Yathrib (la future Médine) : c'est l'hégire qui marque le début du calendrier musulman. Finalement, il se rendit dans la ville de Médine, qui devint le centre d'une importante civilisation islamique Muhammad n'est pas qu'un guide spirituel ; il est aussi le chef temporel des musulmans dont il conduit les expéditions lancées contre les infidèles. De son vivant, l'Arabie est convertie à l'islam ; ses successeurs, les califes, poursuivront cette expansion. Muhammad meurt en 632 ; il est enterré à Médine et son tombeau devient le second Lieu saint de l'islam.
